George Washington was not the first President of the United States. In fact, the first President of the United States was one John Hanson. Don’t go checking the encyclopedia for this guy’s name – he is one of those great men that are lost to history. If you’re extremely lucky, you may actually find a brief mention of his name.
The new country was actually formed on March 1, 1781 with the adoption of The Articles of Confederation.
This document was actually proposed on June 11, 1776, but not agreed upon by Congress until November 15, 1777. Maryland refused to sign this document until Virginia and New York ceded their western lands (Maryland was afraid that these states would gain too much power in the new government from such large amounts of land).

(CNN) — Oprah Winfrey will interview President Obama and his wife, Michelle, next month for a 60-minute program to air before Christmas, the talk show host announced Wednesday.
“Christmas at the White House: An Oprah Primetime Special” will air at 10 p.m. ET December 13 on ABC, her Web site said.
“The intimate, informative and entertaining hourlong special will include a one-on-one conversation with the president, marking the first time Oprah has interviewed him since he took office, as well as an exclusive sit-down interview with the first couple,” it said.
The special “will showcase behind-the-scenes preparations as the White House gets ready for the holiday season,” the Web site said.
Winfrey, who supported Obama in his presidential bid and this month interviewed defeated GOP vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin, recently said she will stop hosting her syndicated talk show in 2011 to focus on launching an Oprah Winfrey Network

Baghdad, Iraq (CNN) — The U.S. drawdown currently happening in Iraq is not just about service members, it also involves military equipment. Because there’s so much of it, packing it up and moving it out has become one of the most challenging missions.
“It’s like any household, you know,” explained Army Col. C.J. Read. “If you stay there long enough, you’re going to accumulate all kinds of things thinking that maybe the next unit might need it and, of course, the last one out the doors is stuck with what’s here.”
From Humvees to generators — the U.S. military’s 17,000 logistical soldiers in Iraq handle anything and everything. But they don’t just deal with the hardware moving out. They also distribute the supplies coming in.

Mecca, Saudi Arabia (CNN) — Chanting “Allahu Akbar” — God is Greater than any — more than 2 million pilgrims crossed new pedestrian bridges Saturday to perform one of the last rituals of the Hajj season.
Jamarat is a re-enactment of an event when Prophet Abraham stoned the devil and rejected his temptations, according to Muslim traditions.
The ritual stoning of three pillars, which occurs in the tent city of Mina — about two miles from Mecca, was the scene of stampedes and many deaths in the 1980s and 1990s as pilgrims passed a crowded bottleneck area leading to the small pillars on the ground.
But this year the Saudi government completed a new project that avoids past congestion at the site. The government has erected three massive pillars and completed a $1.2 billion, five-story bridge nearby where pilgrims can toss stones. Authorities and pilgrims say it’s a roomier atmosphere and more efficient way to accommodate the faithful.
“Everything went fine so far,” Col. Khakled Qarar Mohammadi, head of the emergency forces at Jamarat, told CNN.
“It is an immense responsibility that we had to deal with. About 3 million pilgrims move in a small geographic area at the same time wanting to do the same ritual. So we have been preparing for this for years now.”
Irtiza Hasan, a pilgrim from the United States, said all went well at the ceremony.
“The only incident I saw was that there were some handicapped women who were turned away in fears that they get hurt.”

Atlanta, Georgia (CNN) — As H1N1 cases are rising, so are bacterial pneumonia cases, health officials are finding.
They’re seeing an increase in flu complications leading to pneumonia. At the same time, the flu is at record levels because of the new H1N1 virus, also known as swine flu.
The number of cases is outpacing the typical number of regular flu cases at this time of year. Cases of regular flu usually peak between December and May.
“We’re seeing an increase in serious pneumococcal infectious around the country,” said Dr. Anne Schuchat, who heads the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Social media could transform the NHS and other public services in the same way that file-sharing changed the music industry, a conference has heard.
Growing use of tools, such as Facebook and Twitter, offered an opportunity to reinvent services, delegates heard.
The MyPublicServices event debated ways to harness these conversations, many of which are critical, to make services better and more inclusive.
If this was not done, many services would be undermined, speakers said.
“It’s happened to the music and travel industries and it’s going to happen to public services,” said Dr Paul Hodgkin, founder of the Patient Opinion site that organised the MyPublic Services conference.
Said Dr Hodgkin: “The question is how do we cope with it in a useful and productive way and not spend decades beating each other up?”

The central bank of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has said it will provide banks with extra liquidity.
The news comes days after the state-owned Dubai World said it would ask for an extension on repaying its debts, sending world stock markets tumbling.
The move appeared designed to head off a possible run on UAE banks when they open after a four-day break for the Muslim Eid al-Adha holiday.
Dubai’s government is expected to make a statement before the market opens.
The International Monetary Fund has welcomed the decision by the UAE central bank.
“The United Arab Emirates is a strong resource-based economy and we welcome today’s announcement,” an IMF statement said.
There are fears that the stock market could plunge by up to 10%.
