$1.2 billion Swindle ‘was like Madoff on crack’
Fort Lauderdale, Florida (CNN) — The photographs on the walls of Scott Rothstein’s office at his law firm in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, were a who’s who of Washington.
There were photos of Rothstein shaking hands with former President George W. Bush and Rothstein with Bush’s brother, Jeb, who is Florida’s former governor. More photos showed Rothstein glad-handing Sarah Palin, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Bill Richardson. And then there were the senators: Joe Lieberman, Mel Martinez, Arlen Specter and John McCain.
All appeared happy to be in the company of a man who by some estimates contributed at least $1.9 million to local and national political campaigns.
The problem is, the money was dirty.

Noriega appeals to U.S. high court to avert extradition to France
(CNN) — In what may be former Panamanian dictator Manuel Noriega’s final showdown with the United States, his attorneys have filed a petition with the U.S. Supreme Court to block his extradition to France.
Last month, the court refused to hear Noriega’s appeal as he fights extradition to France, which claims that Noriega laundered drug money through France’s banking system.
Noriega’s attorneys are hoping that the dissenting opinion in that ruling, written by Justices Clarence Thomas and Antonin Scalia, will help persuade the full court to take up the case, which — if that happens — could have a profound effect on how the federal court system deals with cases involving Guantanamo Bay detainees.
“Answering the questions raised here would significantly aid in the resolution of as many as 200 petitions before the federal district court regardless of how the court rules,” said Noriega appellate attorney Jon May.

The Fed’s great rate debate
NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) — The Federal Reserve made it clear Thursday that the hike in its emergency lending rate won’t mean a thing for the interest rates paid by consumers and businesses any time soon.
Now, the debate is whether it was right to make that promise.
There are plenty of experts who argue that the Fed should move sooner rather than later to raise the federal funds rate, its key lending rate that is used as a benchmark for the interest paid on credit cards, home equity loans and many business loans.
Keeping that rate, also known as the fed funds rate, low is one of the tools used by the central bank to try to spur economic activity. This rate has been near 0% since December 2008.
In its most recent statements, Fed policymakers said they expect the rate will stay “exceptionally low” for an “extended period.” It repeated that assurance Thursday.
Still, the Fed surprised markets by raising its discount rate, which is what banks pay to borrow directly from the Fed, to 0.75% Thursday. The move is largely symbolic since that rate affects virtually no borrowing at present.

Kanye West – Coldest Winter (Video)
Directed by Nabil Elderkin, who told MTV earlier today that unlike their previous videos together (“Paranoid,” “Welcome To Heartbreak,”) Kanye was not involved in the editing process and was only presented a final version for approval.
Like the Paranoid video, this video has a new/different mix than the album version.
“This is definitely more of a haunting one. ‘Cause this is sort of a remix… This one he got into his production a little bit more.”
Last time, Def Jam added Paranoid’s new mix to iTunes a few days after that video premiered.
They’ll probably do the same for this, but for now, just the video is on iTunes.
