Apple plans to release a new iPhone this year that could operate using Verizon, Sprint and some smaller carriers, according to a Wall Street Journal report Tuesday.
The move, if it happens, would be a big shift from the current iPhone, which only works in the U.S. with AT&T – a sore point for some users.
The paper cited “people briefed by the company.” Spokespeople for Apple, Verizon and Vodaphone Group, an international carrier, refused to comment, according to the Journal.
An AT&T spokesman said there has been lots of incorrect speculation about an iPhone that runs CDMA, a wireless network used by Verizon, Sprint and others.
“We haven’t seen one yet and only Apple knows when that might occur,” the spokesman told the paper.
Apple did not immediately return a message from CNN.com Tuesday seeking comment.
Apple has had an exclusive relationship with AT&T in the United States since 2007.
The unnamed sources also told the Journal what’s considered an open secret in tech circles – that Apple will separately release a new version of its current iPhone this summer. The new phone will be thinner and have a faster processor, two souces reportedly told the Journal.
Speculation that Apple would expand the iPhone to other wireless carriers has abounded for months. Many reports, citing Apple sources, have said such a move was coming.
But the Journal report sent Apple stock soaring Tuesday morning. The stock, which already closed at a record $232.39, jumped as much as 6.41 points (2.75 percent) in after-hours trading.
One source said the non-AT&T iPhones will begin production in September, while others said the schedule is still up in the air.

Erykah Badu shed her clothes as she walked along a Dallas, Texas, sidewalk until she was nude and then fell near where President Kennedy was assassinated.
The result was a controversial video, released Saturday, for her song “Window Seat,” which Badu said was “shot guerrilla style” with no crew and in one take March 17.
Children could be seen nearby as Badu stripped in Dealey Plaza, a popular tourist spot since Kennedy‘s 1963 assassination.
The singer’s management did not immediately respond to request for comment, but Badu responded to the controversy via Twitter.
She tweeted that “there were children there. i prayed they wouldnt b traumatized.”

They released the making-of video yesterday, and now here’s the track.
The first of (at least) three songs they did.
Scientists at the Large Hadron Collider managed to make two proton beams collide at high energy Tuesday, marking a “new territory” in physics, according to CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research.
The $10 billion research tool has been accelerating the beams since November in the LHC’s 17-mile tunnel on the border of Switzerland and France.
The beams have routinely been circulating at 3.5 TeV, or teraelectron volts, the highest energy achieved at the LHC so far, according to CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research.
The first two attempts Tuesday failed, said Steve Myers, CERN’s director for accelerators. He said the beams were lost before they reached their full energy.
Experiments at the LHC may help answer fundamental questions such as why Albert Einstein’s theory of relativity — which describes the world on a large scale — doesn’t jibe with quantum mechanics, which deals with matter far too small to see.

I normally wouldnt cover this but when I said Ricky Martin was gay, i got tons of hate mail…I’ll be waiting for my apologies now…
Pop singer Ricky Martin declared publicly this week what he avoided discussing for years: He is gay.
“I am proud to say that I am a fortunate homosexual man,” Martin wrote on his official Web site. “I am very blessed to be who I am.”
A decade ago, when ABC’s Barbara Walters pressed Martin to address rumors about his sexuality, he declined to confirm or deny them. “I just don’t feel like it,” Martin said.
Now, Martin wrote, “these years in silence and reflection made me stronger and reminded me that acceptance has to come from within and that this kind of truth gives me the power to conquer emotions I didn’t even know existed.”
The 39-year-old Puerto Rican native started off with the Latin boy band Menudo before launching his solo career in 1991.
His song “Livin’ La Vida Loca” rose to the top of the music charts in 1999 and propelled Martin to stardom.
Martin said he decided years ago to not share “my entire truth” with the world because people he loved warned him that “everything you’ve built will collapse.”
“Allowing myself to be seduced by fear and insecurity became a self-fulfilling prophecy of sabotage,” he wrote. “Today I take full responsibility for my decisions and my actions.”

Google is barnstorming the nation’s capital. Five years after it opened its Washington office, the tech giant is playing an increasingly powerful role in public policy debates over everything from patent reform to foreign policy.
Google (GOOG, Fortune 500) lobbied 13 government agencies last year, spending just under $6 million in the process. That places the search company right behind Microsoft (MSFT, Fortune 500), IBM (IBM, Fortune 500) and Oracle (ORCL, Fortune 500) among the biggest tech lobbies in Washington.
The company employs 30 staffers in Washington and turns to some of the biggest names in lobbying, including the Podesta Group, Dutko Worldwide and McBee Strategic Consulting, for outside help.
Last year, among the 16 bills that Google lobbied Congress on were a proposal to create an investment fund for clean energy and another to publicly detail who is using radio spectrum. Google also advocated for the Federal Communications Commission to support “Net neutrality” — an unfiltered, and equally accessed Internet.

The European Union said Monday it wants the United States and others to publish a draft global anti-piracy deal to end rumors that it advocates cutting off Internet access for illegal downloaders.
European Internet service providers said last month that they were alarmed by leaked details of the secret talks that they feared could lead to criminal sanctions and “three strikes and you’re out” cease-and-desist orders to cut off access for users who share copyrighted content.
They worry about legal changes that could make them liable when users break the law and warn that this would damage users’ rights to privacy and freedom of expression and ultimately stifle innovation and competition in Europe’s Internet industry.
EU trade official Luc Pierre Devigne told a European Commission public hearing that the EU would seek to get the U.S., Canada , Mexico, South Korea, Japan and others to agree on publishing a draft text of the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement at April talks in New Zealand.
He said details of international talks are usually secret but that the EU was anxious to assure European users that it wasn’t planning to strike a global deal that would force any changes to EU law.
“We want to have the negotiating document released so that rumors can be dispelled,” he said. “Three strikes is no one’s idea, no one has ever proposed that.”
French President Nicolas Sarkozy had advocated a “three strikes and you’re out” rule, under which Internet use would be tracked and users caught downloading would be warned twice before their Internet access would be cut off for a year. Britain is considering similar legislation

This past Saturday, Erykah premiered her new music video “Window Seat”. In it, the singer goes full frontal in broad daylight. Despite her artistic expression, the video was marred with some backlash. Erykah addressed it head on and the support she received from her children’s fathers.

President Obama claimed final victory on his top domestic priority Tuesday by signing into law a package of changes to the newly enacted health care reform bill.
The signing ceremony at a community college in northern Virginia culminated almost a year of fiercely partisan debate and a tortuous legislative journey on the proposals generated by Democrats and unanimously opposed by Republicans.
Due to a shifting political landscape, Democrats eventually needed the separate bill being signed Tuesday to make changes in the original legislation in order to get the overall package passed by Congress.

Could it be? Earlier today Michael Yo from E! News and Y100 tweeted a Dr. Dre and Jay-Z track would be coming this week, later chiming in Interscope was buzzing big about it. Detox though? No Way! Like all of you I will believe in Detox when I see it, however little birdies close to Interscope now tell me it is indeed a “uptempo” track intended as Dre’s first single. Mum’s the word on the tracks title.
Stay Tuned..Im gonna say this now… I think the song is Ghetto Techno
