Taxpayer Data At Risk From IRS Security Flaws

by iSpit

The Internal Revenue Service’s failure to use strong passwords, install patches quickly, and adequately control access to computer systems and information makes the system vulnerable to insider threats and attacks from outside, a new government report concludes.

The IRS has failed to fix almost 70 percent of control weaknesses and program deficiencies identified a year ago, the Government Accountability Office said in a report released last week.

Specifically, the IRS has corrected or mitigated 28 of 89 weaknesses and deficiencies found, but left 61 of them unresolved, according to the report.

Can 4G Wireless Take On Traditional Broadband?

by iSpit

Similar to talking on one's cell phone anywhere, 4G will make accessing broadband anywhere easier.

The 4G revolution in wireless won’t just make Web surfing on your mobile phone faster; it could help you say good-bye to traditional cable and DSL broadband.

Clearwire’s 4G WiMax service, currently the only 4G wireless service on the market, offers average download speeds between 3Mbps and 6Mbps, which are comparable with many DSL and cable modem services on the market.

As a result, consumers in the 27 markets where Clearwire currently offers service now have another choice for their broadband service. And many are deciding to ditch cable and DSL for 4G wireless.

Tim Elliott, who lives in Atlanta, is one of those customers. Ten months ago when Clearwire came to town, Elliott, who had subscribed to an AT&T DSL package, canceled his service and signed up.

The $500 Million Art Heist

by iSpit

Rembrandt, The Storm on the Sea of Galilee

The paintings were priceless. The heist, however, was worth $300 million.

This past Thursday marked the 20th anniversary of the largest art theft in U.S. history. And to this day, authorities still have no clue who took some of the greatest works of art from the Isabelle Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston.

“It’s still an on going investigation with leads that we continue to follow,” said FBI spokesman Mike McNamara. “I think at some point the paintings will be recovered.”

But even a $5 million reward and the promise of immunity has yet to tempt anyone to come forward with information on the historic robbery that reads more like a hollywood caper.

U.S. Bases In Afghanistan Say Goodbye To Whoppers, DQ

by iSpit

Whoppers, Dairy Queen sundaes and the latest movies will soon disappear for U.S. military personnel serving Afghanistan, according to a blog posting by morale, welfare and recreation command Sgt. Maj. Michael T. Hall.

In an effort to put more focus on fighting the Taliban, the military is cutting back on “non-essentials” in Afghanistan, Hall announced on the International Security Assistance Force Afghanistan blog this week.

On large U.S. facilities such as the Kandahar and Bagram air bases, that includes closing restaurants such as Burger King, Dairy Queen, Orange Julius and Pizza Hut, dropping first-run movies from base theaters and cutting the amount of canned and bottled imported from the States, Hall writes.

Chinese Mobile Firm Drops Google

by iSpit

Chinese woman using mobile, BBC

AM I THE ONLY ONE WHO REALIZES THAT GOOGLE IS NOT A COUNTRY??? THIS CORPORATEOCRACY WE LIVE IN IS GETTING WORSE EVERYDAY…

China Unicom is to stop using Google search on Android handsets.

The second biggest operator in China is believed to be taking the step in reaction to Google’s decision to stop offering a censored search service.

Instead of using Google search, handset makers will be able to decide which search service to use on phones that run Google’s mobile operating system.

At the same time Google said it would withdraw more of its uncensored search services in China.

The China Unicom deal will first have an impact on Android phones being developed for it by Motorola and Samsung.

The move could be a big blow for Google as China has far more people owning and using mobiles than it does using the net.

Bill Gates, Toshiba-backed TerraPower To Develop ‘traveling wave’ nuclear reactors

by iSpit

Microsoft Corp chairman Bill Gates. File photo

Microsoft (MSFT) founder Bill Gates loves to solve extremely tough problems. For example, he is backing a startup company, TerraPower, which is trying to develop small-scale nuclear reactors. To pull this off, Gates is prepared to shell out several billion dollars.

However, he will also need a strategic partner. And according to a report from the Wall Street Journal, there are preliminary discussions with Toshiba. While the company is best known for its computer business, it also has a strong footprint in nuclear, especially with its U.S.-based Westinghouse division.
The plan is to develop traveling-wave reactors (TWRs), which use depleted uranium fuel and operate underground. Essentially, the belief is that a unit can operate a hundred years without refueling. Yes, this is certainly a game changer.
