Pennsylvania Set To “Trump” Atlantic City in Casino Revenue

by iSpit

Pennsylvania’s surging gaming industry will probably overtake Atlantic City next year as the nation’s second-largest casino market, Wall Street analysts predicted Tuesday.

Pennsylvania has been growing by double-digit margins at the same time that Atlantic City’s gaming revenue has plunged 30 percent since peaking at $5.2 billion in 2006. Pennsylvania’s 10 casinos, which are spread across the state, took in about $2.5 billion in revenue in 2010, compared to $3.6 billion for the 11 gaming halls in Atlantic City.

As Atlantic City continues to decline, it seems inevitable that Pennsylvania will become the next $3 billion market and should surpass New Jersey for the nation’s No. 2 spot in gaming revenue behind Nevada, analysts told an industry conference.

“Pennsylvania gaming, sometime next year, will most likely be bigger than Atlantic City,” Andrew Zarnett, managing director of Deutsche Bank, said during a panel discussion at the Pennsylvania Gaming Congress.

Zarnett and other Wall Street observers believe Atlantic City will continue to struggle as competition intensifies in the Mid-Atlantic gaming market, including the (more…)

World’s Largest Dairy Exporter Under Scrutiny For GMO Contamination

by iSpit

Trouble down under has led to a major controversy concerning the contamination of the food supply with genetically-modified organisms (GMO). Fonterra, a New Zealand-based cooperative that represents the world’s largest exporter of dairy products, has been pinned by Greenpeace Australia for allegedly selling dairy products contaminated with GMOs, despite the fact that the company is not a GMO brand.

Unlike in the US, many other countries around the world require proper labeling of GMOs. With the exception of New Zealand itself, many of the places to which Fonterra distributes its dairy products have GMO labeling requirements, including nearby Australia. And Greenpeace is questioning whether or not Fonterra still belongs in its “True Food Guide,” a guide that rates food brands according to GMO content to help consumers avoid them.

According to a recent report in the New Zealand Herald, Fonterra refused to answer certain questions asked by Greenpeace in its latest survey, upon which the nonprofit decided to re-categorize Fonterra with a “red flag,” indicating the (more…)

Google Begins Testing Google Music Internally

by iSpit

Google has begun testing Google Music internally, a sign that the much anticipated service is nearly ready to launch.

Employees at the online behemoth have begun a process commonly referred to in Silicon Valley as dog-fooding, in which employees try out a new service or product, music industry sources told CNET.

Two weeks ago someone writing at the XDA Developers forum claimed to have accidentally discovered Google Music after installing the Honeycomb version of the Android operating system on a phone. Turns out, that was indeed a working version of the service, the music industry insiders said, adding, however, that the final version could be much different.

Google did not respond to an inquiry from CNET about Google Music.

Technologically speaking, then, Google Music–a streaming service users would access from Web-connected devices–appears close to being ready. However, the sources said the actual launch is being held up by the lack of one vital component. Music.

Google managers told counterparts at the top four record companies last year that they hoped everything would be in place for a launch by (more…)

Employees Fired After Testing Positive For Prescription Drugs

by iSpit

Companies across the United States have started including some prescription drugs in random employee drug tests, and firing workers who test positive.

For example, Sue Bates lost her job of 22 years as an assembly line worker at Dura Automotive Systems after she tested positive for hyrdrocodone, a drug she had been legally prescribed.

Dura and other employers claim that many medications may hamper a worker’s job performance and even affect job safety. Yet many workers’ advocates object to such summary punishment for taking legal medication.

“I don’t think it should end the way it did,” Bates said. “You tell somebody you lost your job because you’re on prescription medication and (more…)

Revealed: US Spy Operation That Manipulates Social Media

by iSpit

The US military is developing software that will let it secretly manipulate social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter by using fake online personas to influence internet conversations and spread pro-American propaganda.

A Californian corporation has been awarded a contract with United States Central Command (Centcom), which oversees US armed operations in the Middle East and Central Asia, to develop what is described as an “online persona management service” that will allow one US serviceman or woman to control up to 10 separate identities based all over the world.

The project has been likened by web experts to China’s attempts to control and restrict free speech on the internet. Critics are likely to complain that it will allow the US military to create a false consensus in online conversations, crowd out unwelcome opinions and smother commentaries or reports that do not correspond with its (more…)

LimeWire is Being Sued for Up to $75 Trillion, Judge Thinks It’s “Absurd”

by iSpit

Thirteen record companies are suing LimeWire LLC, makers of the file-sharing program LimeWire, for as many as $75 trillion, a hilarious sum of money that quite possibly doesn’t even exist. When the companies won a ruling against Lime Wire last May, they requested damages that could now end up totaling the aforementioned ridiculous amount, which is five times our national debt.

The plaintiffs requested damages from $400 billion to $75 trillion and argued that Section 504(c)(1) of the Copyright Act “provided for damages for each instance of infringement where two or more parties were liable,” which could explain how the total could somehow rise to the $75 trillion, because each “instance of infringement” could technically be counted as each and every (more…)

HypeMen (@jensenclan88 x @itsthereal) Present: Kanye West’s First Beats (Disc 1)

by iSpit

So last week I released 3 Full discs of unreleased pre & post college dropout Kanye songs & now Jensen of The HypeMen releases Kanye’s first beat cd.

Says Jensen:

“Last week I was stumbling through my garage, searching through old storage bins, when I came across some old beat CDs from my days as a signed Interscope rapper. I was shocked to find that two of them, both given to me in 2001, had the name Kanye West on them. These two beat CDs, now celebrating their 10 year anniversary and I believe the oldest Kanye beats ever released, are here for your enjoyment.

I think this collection of early Kanye beats shows you where he came from, even if it doesn’t necessarily sound like ‘Kanye’ now. He kept at it and became the incredible producer he is today. I remember he even had to leave the studio sessions early, so he (more…)

AT&T/T-Mobile Merger: Five Ways It Could Impact Music Biz

by iSpit

On the eve of the mobile phone industry’s annual CTIA Wireless conference, AT&T dropped the bombshell news that it is acquiring rival T-Mobile for $39 billion.  The move has all manner of repercussions for the wireless market, should it pass regulatory review. Assuming it does, here’s what it means for the music industry:

– Customers:
At the end of 2010 AT&T and T-Mobile combined had 130 million and Verizon had 94 million. The deal would make AT&T again the No. 1 mobile operator in the country. And by adding T-Mobile’s 33 million users to its base, that’s a lot more potential iPhone buyers. And a combined AT&T/T-Mobile would make it the only GSM carrier in the country (Verizon and others use CDMA) and the only choice for subscribers who want phones that work in Europe.

– Spectrum:
Along with T-Mobile’s customers, AT&T would get its spectrum-assets that if used wisely could mean better coverage and capacity for high-bandwidth multimedia services like streaming music and video, particularly in rural areas. It also means AT&T would be able to more quickly roll out its next-generation LTE network faster, which (more…)

Guatemalans To Sue US Government For Secretly Infecting Them With Syphilis

by iSpit

Last fall, it became widely public that the US government deliberately infected roughly 700 Guatemalans with syphilis in a 1940s experiment on the effectiveness of penicillin (http://www.naturalnews.com/029924_m…). Now, those involved in the experiment and their families are planning to sue the US government for damages unless it agrees to properly settle the issue outside of court.

The experiment represents just one of a long line of heinous medical experimentation projects conducted by the US government against human beings, including a similar syphilis experiment conducted on 600 black men in Tuskegee, Ala., between 1932 and 1972. Researchers in that case tricked the men into accepting “free medical care,” and purposely infected them with the disease. They then denied these men treatment while observing their health digression. The incident has been dubbed “the longest non-therapeutic experiment on human beings in medical history” (http://www.infoplease.com/spot/bhmt…).

And the Guatemalan incident is believed to be an offshoot of the Tuskegee (more…)
