Judges Will No Longer Have To Declare Whether They Are Freemasons in UK

by iSpit

Judges will no longer have to declare whether they are freemasons when they take office, Jack Straw, UK Justice Secretary, said yesterday.

Jack Straw said it would be ‘disproportionate’ to continue to force judges to declare if they are freemasons. He explains his decision today in a written ministerial statement.

He admitted the review of the policy operating since 1998 had shown no evidence of impropriety or malpractice within the judiciary as a result of a judge being a Freemason. As a result he said ‘it would be disproportionate to continue the collection or retention of this information’.

The United Grand Lodge of England made representations in May. They drew attention to the decision of the European Court of Human Rights in Grande Oriente d’Italia di Palazzo Guistiniani v Italy (no 1) and Grande Oriente d’Italia di Palazzo Guistiniani v Italy (no 2) and indicated that they might seek judicially to review the application of the policy to the judiciary. In the light of my consideration of those representations I decided to review the policy.

Read the Court’s Judgement
As a result of this review we have decided to end the current policy of requiring applicants for judicial office to declare membership of the freemasons.
The review of the policy operating since 1998 has shown no evidence of impropriety or (more…)

Internet Killed The Radio Star: Let NPR “Go Dark”

by iSpit

National Public Radio is facing the threat of losing its federal funding and having member stations lose their programming. But would this really be a bad thing?

Today, Republicans in the US House of Representatives are going to vote on the elimination of federal funding of National Public Radio as well as prohibit local public radio stations from using federal funds to pay NPR dues.

If you’re reading this article and you don’t know what NPR is, essentially it is the radio equivalent of PBS, the network of public television stations that carry popular public TV programs such as NOVA, Frontline, American Experience, Masterpiece TheaterAntiques Roadshow and Sesame Street.

In addition to its newscasts, NPR is probably best known for All Things Considered, a two-hour weekday program that covers a variety of news and cultural subjects that has been on the air since 1971.

Both of these systems were formed in the late 1960s and the early 1970s by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) which is a not for profit organization that is directly funded by the United States government.

CPB provides some funding to PBS and to NPR, but a substantial amount of funding to PBS and NPR also come from private sources via fundraising efforts and endowments by charitable organizations.

The Republicans in the House are livid and are on a de-funding warpath because of a release of a video last week where prominent fundraiser for NPR, Ron Schiller, was secretly taped making reportedly anti-conservative, anti-Republican, anti-Tea Party comments by political activist James O’Keefe during a private meeting with a fake front group for the Muslim Brotherhood, organized by O’Keefe.

[EDIT:Per reader requests, I am posting the unedited, uncut version of the O'Keefe video below so readers can make up their own minds about the context of Ron Schiller's comments.] (more…)

U.S. Charter-School Network With Turkish Link Draws FBI Attention

by iSpit

Fethullah Gulen is a major Islamic political figure in Turkey, but he lives in self-imposed exile in a Poconos enclave and gained his green card by convincing a federal judge in Philadelphia that he was an influential educational figure in the United States.

As evidence, his lawyer pointed to the charter schools, now more than 120 in 25 states, that his followers – Turkish scientists, engineers, and businessmen – have opened, including Truebright Science Academy in North Philadelphia and another charter in State College, Pa.

The schools are funded with millions of taxpayer dollars. Truebright alone receives more than $3 million from the Philadelphia School District for its 348 pupils. Tansu Cidav, the acting chief executive officer, described it as a regular public school.

“Charter schools are public schools,” he said. “We follow the state curriculum.”

But federal agencies – including the FBI and the Departments of Labor and Education – are investigating whether (more…)

#WeatherWars: Two 7.0-Magnitude Earthquakes Strike Burma

by iSpit

Two strong earthquakes struck northeastern Burma less than a minute apart Thursday night. They could be felt as far away as Bangkok, but a tsunami was not generated.

The first 7.0-magnitude quake was just 10 kilometres deep, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. It was followed by another of the same strength but far deeper: 230 kilometres.

The quakes struck along Burma’s borders with Thailand and Laos, about 110 kilometres) from the northern Thai city of Chiang Rai.

Buildings swayed in Bangkok, 500 miles (800 kilometres) south of the epicentre.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center says it was located too far inland to create a destructive wave.

Fed Intervenes; Buys Dollars, Sells Yen In New York Trading

by iSpit

The Federal Reserve intervened in the currency market Friday, buying dollars and selling yen as part of a coordinated effort by Group of Seven nations to weaken Japan’s currency.

It was the first coordinated currency intervention since 2000. The intervention began in Tokyo with the Bank of Japan intervening. The Bank of England, Bundesbank, Banque de France and Bank of Italy all intervened during European trading, and the Bank of Canada also intervened.

The initial intervention from the Fed came right at 8 a.m. EDT, the start of the New York trading day. Three U.S. banks familiar with the intervention told Dow Jones Newswires the Fed’s trades early in the New York day totaled about $50 million.

The initial intervention by the Fed was symbolic to show the central bank stood with the Bank of Japan in the coordinated effort, said Michael Woolfolk, senior currency strategist at Bank of New York Mellon in New York. But he added that it was also a “warning shot across (more…)

Military Rescuers Brace for Japan Radiation in U.S. Aid Flights

by iSpit

Low levels of radiation exposure probably will become “a fact of life” for U.S. military forces flying relief and rescue missions to aid victims of Japan’s earthquake as they near areas affected by leaks from a damaged nuclear plant, according to a U.S. Navy spokesman.

“Having crews return with detectable levels of radiation is going to be a fact of life with this mission for the foreseeable future,” said Lieutenant Anthony Falvo, a spokesman for the Seventh Fleet in Japan. “As long as we take every precaution to ensure that the risk is contained and mitigated, these folks will be just fine.”

The Navy treated two Seventh Fleet air crew members with potassium iodide pills as a precaution this week after they became contaminated with radiation emitted from the damaged nuclear plant at Fukushima.

Of the 17 air crew members who the Navy said three days ago showed “low levels of radioactivity,” all but one were contaminated only on their outer clothing, Falvo said.

One crew member had radiation on his skin, and “that was easily remedied with (more…)

Ice Cream Made With Human Breast Milk Sells Out In London

by iSpit

*Blank Stare*

Gross or tasty? A London company is offering an unusual dessert – ice-cream made with human breast milk.

The Icecreamists, a trendy ice cream parlor, says its “Baby Gaga” ice-cream sold out as soon as it launched Friday.

The company paid women who donated their breast milk after health screening. The milk is then pasteurized and churned together with vanilla pods and lemon zest. The dish comes in a martini glass, and sells for 14 pounds ($22.50) each.

Matt O’Connor, who owns the company, says the product is “organic, free-range and totally natural.”

The Food Standards Agency says there are no specific laws prohibiting businesses from selling human milk products, although they must comply with general food safety laws to ensure the product is safe for consumption.

.XXX Domain Approved: Now Begins The Era Of Meaningless TLDs

by iSpit

After ten years of saying no and vocal opposition by everyone potentially affected from an .XXX top level domain – everyone except .XXX profiteers, that is – last Thursday ICANN officially approved .XXX.

Porn already owns the best .COM real estate it ever needs. Yet now .XXX’s pimp daddies at ICM Registry and its backers have free reign to scoop up all the domain squatting and defensive registrations they can handle.

No one is looking at an .XXX domain and thinking, “That’s where I’ll cash in.” They’re thinking, “I better buy my business name, my daughter’s name, and my own name… just in case.”

ICM claims it will only sell domains to those their own 5013c “management” arm IFFOR deems as “officially in the adult entertainment industry.” It is unclear how this is determined. Meanwhile, ICM has already pre-sold over a quarter million domains.

Internet porn giant Kink.com knows a protective business decision when it sees one: Kink felt strong-armed to pre-purchase their brand’s domains in the copycat .XXX realm to protect their brands, and have defensively purchased thousands of domains.

Sure, it’s porn’s money to spend as they please. And you don’t have to buy anything, either. But this speaks volumes to the false sense of endorsement that may have contributed to one of ICANN’s most confusing decisions to hand piles of money to (more…)

Cell Therapy: How Leaving Prison Affects A Rapper’s Career

by iSpit

[vodpod id=Video.5719188&w=425&h=350&fv=%26rel%3D0%26border%3D0%26]

As Prodigy is welcomed home and Ja Rule prepares for his upcoming prison bid, one writer breaks down how being behind bars impacts a rapper’s career.

“It’s Friday you in for a long stay / Gettin’ shackled on the bus first thing come Monday / Hoping in your mind you’ll be released one day / But knowing / Home is a place you’re not going / For a long while / Now you’re up on the isle / And the position that you’re in got you refusing to smile…”
–Prodigy, Mobb Deep’s “Up North Trip.”

Ain’t No Sunshine

Among prison’s realities is the sobering effect it has on the people it surrounds. While a parade of emcees enter and exit the penal system, it consequently acts as a crash-course in sobriety. For some, like DMX, prison brings forth a detoxification process that they haven’t seen or felt in years. It gives them the opportunity to escape persistent drug use. For others, the sobriety is from the fame, groupies; the life that they thought would never leave them. Even in a media-filled world where Twitter and Facebook can update fans at a seconds notice, prison has a way of limiting the all access world. It takes an artist from performing for thousands, tweeting for hundreds of thousands, and gives them (more…)
