Bon Jovi Opens New Housing Unit in Philadelphia

by iSpit

Jon Bon Jovi joined with homeless advocates on Tuesday to celebrate the opening of a transitional housing unit for young adults.

Jon Bon Jovi’s Soul Foundation has been supporting Covenant House’s work with homeless young people for two decades.  Recently, the singer/songwriter was named to a White House council that will deal with the problem nationwide.

“I’m going to be very proud to go back to Washington and share with my fellow council members about what’s being done here in Philadelphia; to offer it as yet another example and inspiration of what can be done in other communities across the nation.

The new Rites of Passage housing unit on Kensington Avenue will offer 20 young people at a time temporary housing while they work to become independent.  New resident 21 year old Bianca Cruz has struggled with housing since she was 12.

“I’m very excited.  From the moment I saw this building, I’ve been the happiest person in the world.”

The Good Friday Myth

by iSpit

How well do you know the bible you read?

By: Roy A. Reinhold

I was quite blown away recently to hear Hal Lindsey state on his national radio program that he has come to believe that the scriptures show a Wednesday crucifixion. Perhaps you ought to examine the evidence and decide for yourself; be like the Bereans who were complimented in scriptures for examining the teaching of Paul in light of the scriptures to see if it was so. There is clear, concrete evidence in the scriptures for a Wednesday crucifixion; you be the judge.

3 DAYS AND 3 NIGHTS IN THE HEART OF THE EARTH

One of the most common questions asked by new Christians is, “How could Jesus have been in the heart of the earth for three days and three nights if He died on a Friday afternoon and rose before sunrise on a Sunday?” Most Christians duck the question, since at most they can only come up with one day and two nights (Friday nighttime, Saturday daytime, and Saturday nighttime in our measure of days). If they add in the Friday daytime they get two periods of daytime, even though Jesus would have died in the late afternoon on a Friday. This late afternoon death is consistent with the Passover lamb being killed between the two evenings of Jewish teaching. The lamb was killed between 3 and 6 PM on the afternoon of the 14th of Abib/Nisan and prepared, because the 15th was the first day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread, which was an annual Sabbath observance (the first and last days of Unleavened Bread were annual Sabbaths in addition to the normal weekly Sabbaths). This search of the scriptures is important, not because it affects salvation, but because it answers the questions posed on whether Jesus kept His Word, and whether the Bible is true in this matter. A legitimate concern and question for (more…)

Dr. Dre Wins Lawsuit Against Death Row, Digital Rights to ‘The Chronic’

by iSpit

The new incarnation of Death Row Records does not have the rights to sell Dr. Dre‘s iconic rap album “The Chronic” digitally, a federal judge ruled Tuesday.

The ruling by U.S. District Judge Christina Snyder ruling states that the rapper and producer has received far less money than he is due from online sales of the 1992 album, which also helped launch the career of Snoop Dogg.

The ruling does not call for a halt of digital sales of Dre’s music, but entitles him to receive 100 percent of the proceeds of online sales, his attorney, Howard King, told The Associated Press.

The rapper, whose real name is Andre Young, sued WIDEawke Death Row Records last year, claiming it was improperly selling “The Chronic” digitally and using some of his music on compilation albums without his permission.

Snyder’s ruling states the label, which bought the original Death Row Records’ holdings out of bankruptcy, does not have the right to put Dr. Dre’s music on compilation or (more…)

Catch Up: Yonas – Radio Flow

by iSpit

YONAS – Radio Flow

I’m still undecided on this one but its cool. How do you feel?

As the April 25th release date approaches for for YONAS’ official debut The Proven Theory, he continues to let loose with new songs and videos for fans. Last week, YONAS sat down with KarmaloopTV to give fans a look into the album, and now he’s giving fans another taste of the album with the anthemic “Radio Flow,” a track that leaves no doubt as to how or why he’s been honored by the likes of Billboard and the Independent Music Awards for his songwriting prowess.

From the jump on “Radio Flow” producer Sean Divine makes his presence known, with a mix of striking keys and a heavy bass line lending itself to YONAS’ intense rhymes and ultra-infectious chorus. “Recording this hook was probably the most fun I’ve had recording a hook — and I’ve recorded damn near one hundred hooks in just this past year,” says the Bronx rapper. And it is the catchiness of the song and the hook, mixed with an unrelenting flow and deft lyrics that help truly drive home one of the key messages of the song. “Music can be appealing commercially, without losing it’s integrity and wit,” explains YONAS, “and this embodies that ideology to the fullest.” From start to finish YONAS powers through the track with fluid lyrical precision and boastful proclamations, as he raps, “I’m coming from New York, but I’m good in every city/ So go on sing along if you people are ridin’ with me/ Let the radio speak.”

Rick Ross v. Freeway Rick Ross – Who Ya Got?

by iSpit

By: Richard Patterson

Writing for the IP Brief is no easy task.  Everyday I’m hustlin’ to find an interesting topic to blog about.  Thankfully for me (and you), “Freeway” Rick Ross (“Freeway”) recently filed a new lawsuit against rapper William Leonard Roberts II (aka Rick Ross “The Boss” – not to be mistaken with a certain dude who plays with The E Street Band) in California state court after losing his federal court battle for trademark infringement against the MC last year (anyone confused?).  Freeway is notorious for his role in the Iran-contra affair, and for being one of the largest drug kingpins in United States history.  After spending nearly twenty years behind bars for drug trafficking, Freeway was released from prison in 2009 and took immediate action against unauthorized use of his name and likeness.  The Boss’s rise to power began in 2002 when he adopted the “Rick Ross” persona in songs and videos – most of which illustrate life as a drug dealer.

Freeway filed a lawsuit last year in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California where he alleged trademark infringement, unfair competition and misappropriation of name and likeness.  Freeway argued that his name had secondary meaning and should be protected because he “established his Rick Ross trademark and trade name by engaging in unlawful drug commerce in California from 1980 to 1995.”  The judge correctly dismissed the first two claims, explaining that the Lanham Act does not recognize unlawful use in commerce as a basis for secondary meaning.  The court, however, declined to assert supplemental jurisdiction over the state claim of misappropriation.  This is why Freeway is bringing his new claim now.

Your iPhone, iPod & iPad Track Wherever You Go & Save It In a Secret File

by iSpit

The wildly popular Apple iPhone tracks wherever you go, recording location data and saving it to a secret file that tech-minded sleuths could easily access, the Guardian of London reports.

The file stores timestamped latitudes and longitudes, and is synchronized to a user’s computer when the iPhone is connected, security researchers found. If the phone or computer were stolen, anyone could spy this data using a simple progam, according to the report.

From the Guardian piece Wednesday:

For some phones, there could be almost a year’s worth of data stored, as the recording of data seems to have started with Apple’s iOS 4 update to the phone’s operating system, released in June 2010.

“Apple has made it possible for almost anybody – a jealous spouse, a private detective – with access to your phone or computer to get detailed information about where you’ve been,” said Pete Warden, one of the researchers.

Only the iPhone records the user’s location in this way, say Warden and Alasdair Allan, the data scientists who discovered the file and are presenting their findings at the Where 2.0 conference in San Francisco on Wednesday. “Alasdair has looked for similar tracking code in (Google’s) Android phones (more…)

NFL Plans Awkward 9/11/11 Matchup

by iSpit

The 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks is less than five months away. It was one of the worst days in the history of the United States and irrevocably changed our nation, most notably in lower Manhattan where reconstruction is not complete.

That day also will mark the opening weekend of the National Football League season, at least if the owners and players can manage to divvy up their $9 billion annual revenue pie in time.

Labor unrest aside, the NFL did the right thing Tuesday by announcing a pair of meaningful matchups for this historic date – three days following the Thursday night kickoff between Super Bowl champion Green Bay Packers and New Orleans Saints.

On that Sunday afternoon, the New York Giants will visit the Washington Redskins, opening the action with a game tying together the two cities that were attacked on 9/11. The day will be wrapped with the Dallas Cowboys at the New York Jets in a game broadcast on NBC’s highly rated “Sunday Night Football.”

The day promises to be one of sadness, somber remembrance and retrospective of how the past decade has unfolded for all of us.

Football is virtually meaningless when facing the scope of such an incident. Yet after a difficult day, a night of frivolity, an exhibition of unity and a chance at night’s end for New York to cheer with the rest of the (more…)

The ruined nuclear reactor at Chernobyl is to be sealed within a 20,000-tonne steel shield designed to prevent any further radiation from escaping for 100 years. It would be large enough to enclose St Paul’s Cathedral in London, or the Statue of Liberty.

Governments from around the world have pledged $785m (£480m) at a conference in Kiev, a week before the 25th anniversary of the nuclear accident in Ukraine – on 26 April 1986 the reactor suffered explosions and caught fire. This brings the total raised for the Chernobyl safety works to $1.8bn.

Twenty-eight governments have so far offered money. The European commission was the biggest contributor with $143m at the Kiev Nuclear Safety Summit. The US pledged $123m and Britain, which still has more than 300 hill farms in Wales under radiation restrictions following the fallout from Chernobyl, will contribute $50m. The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development announced an extra $172m. Japan, Italy and Canada are considering whether to contribute.

The planned arch-shaped structure will be 190 metres (623ft) wide and more than 100 metres tall, taking five years to build. It will replace the concrete sarcophagus erected around the reactor in the months following the accident. This shield now has cracks, raising fears that 95% of the original nuclear material remaining inside the (more…)

Parents, Don’t Dress Your Little Girls Like Tramps

I saw someone at the airport the other day who really caught my eye.

Her beautiful, long blond hair was braided back a la Bo Derek in the movie “10″ (or for the younger set, Christina Aguilera during her “Xtina” phase). Her lips were pink and shiny from the gloss, and her earrings dangled playfully from her lobes.

You can tell she had been vacationing somewhere warm, because you could see her deep tan around her midriff thanks to the halter top and the tight sweatpants that rested just a little low on her waist. The icing on the cake? The word “Juicy” was written on her backside.

Yeah, that 8-year-old girl was something to see all right. … I hope her parents are proud. Their daughter was the sexiest girl in the terminal, and she’s not even in middle school yet.

Abercrombie & Fitch came under fire this spring for introducing the “Ashley,” a push-up bra for girls who normally are too young to have anything to push up. Originally it was marketed for girls as young as 7, but after public outcry, it raised its intended audience to the wise old age of 12. I wonder how do people initiate a conversation in the office about the undeveloped chest of elementary school girls without someone nearby thinking they’re pedophiles?

What kind of PowerPoint presentation was shown to the Abercrombie executives that persuaded them to green light such a product?

That there was a demand to make little girls hot?

I mean, that is the purpose of a push-up bra, right? To enhance sex appeal by lifting up, pushing together and basically showcasing the wearer’s breasts. Now, thanks to AF Kids, girls don’t have to wait until (more…)

4/20: Bilboard’s 20 Smoking Songs About…Weed

by iSpit

20. “Because I Got High”

Afro Man

Most Smokin’ Lyric: “I was gonna clean my room until I got high/ I gonna get up and find the broom but then I got high/My room is still messed up and I know why (Yeah, hey!)/ Because I got high, because I got high, because I got high.”

Potency: ONE. At first, “Because I Got High” sounds like a fun, harmless joke about how smoking weed leads to unproductivity. But when Afro Man’s problems get more and more serious — he goes from cutting class to losing his wife and kids — this song just becomes a buzzkill.

19. “Hash Pipe”

Weezer

Most Smokin’ Lyric: “You’ve got your problems, I’ve got my ass wide/ You’ve got your big G’s, I’ve got my hash pipe.”

Potency: FOUR. After a prolonged break following the release of “Pinkerton,” Weezer came roaring back with this feisty first single from the Green Album. Among the bizarre lyrics — “The knee-stocking flavor is a favorite treat/Of men that don’t bother with the taste of a teat” — is frontman Rivers Cuomo’s snarling defense of relaxing with some hash.

Mumia Abu Jamal – Reading Fanon

Fanon’s action is within the context of post-war marked by the ideological struggle between the Western bloc led by the United States and the socialist bloc led by the Soviet Union. The division is clear between the capitalist and the socialist bloc, a third world emerging in the years 1950-1960: it is the third world that also claimed his place in international relations and its share in the wealth sharing the planet. Third World states for the first time its political existence in 1955 at the Bandung Conference, proclaiming his refusal of the bipolar world. Many Third World leaders appear simultaneously with the movements of national liberation struggle and lead a more radical in Africa, Asia, Latin America. The 1960s were marked by violent repression and assassinations of politicians representing the struggle of oppressed peoples: bloody crackdown in Indonesia in 1965 (500,000 dead), assassination of Patrice Lumumba in the Congo, murder of Che Guevara in Bolivia, killing Malcolm X, Martin Luther King in the U.S., assassination of Mehdi Ben Barka in Morocco, the Rivonia trial in South Africa where Nelson Mandela and his companions were sentenced to life imprisonment …

Fanon, FLN activist, editor of the newspaper El-Mujahid, will represent the Provisional Government of the Republic of Algeria, without, knowing the victory achieved this dream in which he contributed so much. He said that the release by the killing of the colonial system and the opening of another channel. Fanon, whether the madness, racism or the “universalism” confiscated by the powerful, do not stop, basically, trying to put “living together”, like a transformation acts in situations where dominant and dominated each have everything to lose the perpetuation of existing orders and disorders. Fanon, this rebel, a rebel who fight tenaciously and flawless against domination by the powerful over the weak, enlightens us today about the relationship between fundamental one hand, the right to rebellion before a system social, political and economic plunges the world int (more…)
