Yesterday and without warning, US authorities resumed “Operation In Our Sites” seizing several domain names associated with copyright infringement and counterfeiting. Today, yet more domains were added to the growing list. TorrentFreak caught up with one site owner who told us that while they were taken by surprise by a “pointless” seizure, they’ll soon be back.
As indicated in our exclusive report yesterday, the Department of Justice (DOJ) and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) have resumed “Operation In Our Sites”, the domain name seizing initiative designed to crack down on copyright infringement.
Following on from the most recent set of seizures in February, yesterday’s action represents the fourth phase of the operation. The following six domains were taken:
* Re1ease.net

R.I.P. to a legend and an inspiration to us all

Gil Scott-Heron died Friday afternoon in New York, his book publisher reported. He was 62. The influential poet and musician is often credited with being one of the progenitors of hip-hop, and is best known for the spoken-word piece “The Revolution Will Not Be Televised.”

Scott-Heron was born in Chicago in 1949. He spent his early years in Jackson, Tenn., attended high school in The Bronx, and spent time at Pennsylvania’s Lincoln University before settling in Manhattan. His recording career began in 1970 with the album Small Talk at 125th and Lenox, which featured the first version of “The Revolution Will Not Be Televised.” The track has since been referenced and parodied extensively in pop culture.

Scott-Heron continued to record through the 1970s and early ’80s, before taking a lengthy hiatus. He briefly returned to the studio for 1994′s Spirits. That album featured the track “Message to the Messengers,” in which Scott-Heron cautions the hip-hop generation that arose in his absence to use its newfound power responsibly. He has been cited as a key influence by many in the hip-hop community — such as rapper-producer Kanye West, who closed his platinum-selling 2010 album My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy with a track built around a sample of Scott-Heron’s voice.

Scott-Heron struggled publicly with substance abuse in the 2000s, and spent the early part of the decade in and out of jail on drug possession charges. He began performing again after his release in 2007, and in 2010 released a new album, I’m New Here, to widespread critical acclaim.

The U.S. Senate voted to advance a four-year extension of provisions of the USA Patriot Act allowing law enforcement to track suspected terrorists with roving wiretaps.
The Senate voted 79-18 to move toward a final vote on the provisions, now scheduled to expire at midnight. They would be extended until June 1, 2015.
The bill’s roving-wiretap section allows federal agents to obtain a single warrant to monitor phone calls of suspects using a series of mobile phones.
Other powers in the legislation let authorities obtain business and library records, and target so-called “lone wolf” suspects who aren’t affiliated with any terrorist group.
The Patriot Act was passed after the Sept. 11 attacks, and many of its provisions are permanent law. Some of its surveillance powers have been opposed by some lawmakers and outside groups, including civil liberties activists.
Both chambers approved a three-month extension in February.

Pharmacy industry groups warned Google years ago that it should be doing a better job screening ads from online pharmacies that break U.S. laws.
But Google didn’t respond to their warnings, according to a report by the Wall Street Journal.
Earlier this month, an SEC filing revealed that Google had quietly put aside $500 million during the first quarter to prepare for a possible fine from a Department of Justice investigation. Later, the Journal reported that the investigation was related to Google’s practice of accepting ads from online pharmacies who shipped drugs without requiring a prescription, sold controlled substances, and shipped counterfeit drugs.
Today, the Journal published a 2003 letter from the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy (NABP) asking Google to take ads only from pharmacies that Google verified (more…)
