Malcolm X’s Daughters Say New Manning Marable Biography’ Gets Facts Wrong

by iSpit

Two of Malcolm X’s daughters are unhappy that a new biography alleges their parents’ marriage was strained and that their mother - and possibly their father - was unfaithful.

The marriage “was definitely faithful and devoted because my father was a man of impeccable integrity, and I think that most people, if they’re not clear on anything, they’re clear that he was moral and ethical and had impeccable character,” Ilyasah Shabazz said Wednesday. The Skanner News Video: Who Killed Malcolm X

Ilyasah and Malaak Shabazz spoke to The Associated Press about “Malcolm X: A Life of Reinvention.” Author Manning Marable, a highly respected scholar who worked for more than 20 years on the book, died last week of complications of pneumonia just before publication. Malcolm X’s daughters did not speak to Marable for the book, which draws upon thousands of interviews, government documents and private papers.

The book has been in the top 10 on Amazon.com’s best-seller list, and the print run has been increased from 46,000 to (more…)

Did Amazon Overstep With Its 99-Cent Lady Gaga Album Promotion?

by iSpit

By designating Lady Gaga’s hotly anticipated album “Born This Way” as Monday’s “MP3 Daily Deal,” Amazon appears to be have gambled that the cost of selling the album at far below wholesale price will be worth the value of drawing additional customer traffic to promote its Cloud Drive and Cloud Player.

The promotion is sparking plenty of attention all right — but much of it for the wrong reasons, as customers vent their anger over difficulties in downloading the album.

As is the case with every purchase at its MP3 store, buyers of “Born This Way” were given the option of downloading the album to their Cloud Drive or to their computer.

And on its music home page, Amazon reminded customers that their purchase of the “Born This Way” album download would qualify them for a free upgrade to 20 mb of Cloud Drive storage, which normally costs $20 a year. The same offer applies to a customer’s first purchase of any Amazon MP3 album from March 28 to Dec. 31, 2011.

But heavy demand for “Born This Way” created congestion at the MP3 store, greatly slowing the downloading process for some customers. One Billboard staffer required about 80 minutes to download the entire album to his computer Monday morning Eastern time. However, another staffer who purchased the album in the early afternoon via the Amazon MP3 app on his Android handset experienced no delays downloading all the tracks to his Cloud Drive account and to his handset; several customers commented on Amazon.com that they’d had no problems downloading the (more…)

What the Music Business Can Learn From Netflix’s Success

by iSpit

If the record industry wants music subscription services to become mainstream products, it should pay close attention to the factors behind growth at Netflix. In the first quarter of 2011, the online video rental service added 3.6 million subscribers, to finish with 23.6 million.

To put it another way, the company’s subscriber numbers increased 69% in a single year. It’s the kind of explosive growth normally seen in a company’s formative years, even though Netflix is a mature company. Check out the year-over-year subscriber growth starting with Q1 2009 and ending with Q1 2011: 25%, 26%, 28%, 31%, 35%, 42%, 52%, 63% and 69%.

With Netflix consumers have proven they will rent content – even re-run content – and stream it from the cloud. They will pay for digital content they could get for free through illegal means. They will pay if the service allows streaming (more…)

Big Apple, Big Google, Big Brother

by iSpit

In some ways, all the uproar about Apple saving location data on its iOS device users is old news. Guess what? Big Brother, or Big Google, also collects geo-location information from its mobile, Android-powered devices. It’s like anything else in computing: geo-location can provide great services and resources, but it can also be abused.

Take, for example, a woman who was recently robbed in Texas. Using her stolen iPhone, police officers were able to quickly find not only her stolen phone, but her wedding ring as well. Yea!

On the other hand, say another woman is in an abusive relationship and goes to a friend’s house or to a “safe-house” shelter. Her husband tracks her down using her smartphone and literally drags her back “home.”

That last case isn’t fiction. My friend Angela, a Certified Information Privacy Professional (CIPP) tells me, “I teach tech-safety courses for domestic-violence survivors. This scenario has a probability of 1. In the two years I’ve been teaching, we’ve had multiple instances of abusers using hidden GPS-Bluetooth phone combinations to track vehicles, which sort of totally sucks when the vehicle is now parked at a ‘secret’ women’s shelter.”

“Worse, the use of phone ‘family’ plans and fancy smartphones are among the most difficult issues we face in the teaching process,” Angela said. “Most of the women we see are in desperate financial straits; often there’s no money for any sort of mobile plan (and we’ll leave aside the whole getting-an-account-set-up-under-those-circumstances thing), let alone for a decent phone. Realistically, they know they have to dump the gadget and the plan and (more…)

Avoiding The Subway Hustlers And Entrepreneurs (By: CharmLite)

by CharmLite

They greet me at city hall with cat calls, “YO’s, light-skin, fuck you, she can’t speak,

Three steps down, you got some change sweetie?”

I reply, “No, only a credit card this time.”

Only to be followed to the token machine by a stinch and a flinch

Of a woman with a piercing whine,

“I’m huuuungry!”

Heard it all before sister, I hate to be rude, but so am I

Just got finished my 9-5 to go home still broke

So, the only thing I can offer you is hope

And a prayer in the few seconds I have of silence in the station before high school lets out

They rush past me in swarms of skinny jeans colorful snap backs and backpacks

The “educated bunch”,

but these vulchers have been caged for 7 hours and now lookin for lunch,

Who will be the victim today?

A commotion between the pack only serves as a disguise

to look for unsuspecting guys with all the right eyes.

iPhone, iPad, iPod, oh god, (more…)

UK Court ‘subpoenas’ @Twitter For Names Of Super-Injunction Tweeters (w/Audio)

by iSpit

Twitter is at the center of a row over super-injunctions — gagging orders which prevent a person from speaking about something — because users are tweeting information considered confidential by British courts.

A British football player (that’s “soccer player” for the readers across the pond) has taken out a super-injunction in a UK court to prevent the publication of private information. The action prevents anyone in the UK from discussing the subject of the injunction or the injunction itself.

The law firm representing the soccer player, says that it is “not suing Twitter” as many news outlets are reporting, had applied “to obtain limited information concerning the unlawful use of Twitter by a small number of individuals who may have breached a court order”.

A court ruling earlier this week ‘downgraded’ the super-injunction, citing the Internet making it ‘impossible’ to police, thus revealing the fact that an injunction has been sought, and the initials of the soccer player who took out the injunction as “CTB”.

While many have speculated as to who this soccer player is, his name is █████████ ███████████. It hasn’t stopped other US news publications publishing suggested names, however.

This comes only months after the US government subpoenaed Twitter in a bid to support the ongoing criminal investigation into the Wikileaks organisation, to collect names of those involved in the organisation or its operations.

Icelandic member of parliament, Birgitta Jónsdóttir, was assisted by Twitter in having the gagging order on the (more…)
