When emigrated from Nigeria with her family in 2005, she left behind her home and her native tongue, but held fast to one simple principle: “If I wanted to be the valedictorian, I couldn’t slack.”
On Wednesday, she will give the valedictory speech – in English – at the Social Justice Academy in Hyde Park. As a high-achieving African immigrant, she is not alone. According to Census numbers, African immigrants have a 96 percent high-school graduation rate nationwide – 12 percent higher than the national average.
“Many Africans, they have a lot to prove,” said Onwuakor, who plans to studChidiogo Onwuakory pre-med in the fall at UMass-Amherst. “This is the chance to do something with their lives, given the opportunity that was denied to them back home.” John Mugane, director of the African Language Program at Harvard and a native of Kenya, said the high graduation levels aren’t surprising.
“The whole idea is that when you come from a colonial country, education is what grants (more…)
Eternia returns with her first audio leak since the critically acclaimed and Juno-nominated album “AT LAST” (Fat Beats Records). Elzhi’s “ONE LOVE” – arguably the deepest track on the Nas-inspired ‘Elmatic’ – tells the tale of a fly, ride-or-die woman that had it rough growing up, but ends up as El’s one love. As Eternia explains it,
“I related so much to the person that Elzhi describes in ‘One Love’. A lot of her experiences – not all, but many – mirrored my own life.”

I don’t even know where to begin; I guess I’ll start by stating this: I’m not really into awards and accolades, only because I feel that the work I have put in validates itself. While much appreciated, from my perspective there isn’t a need for outside kudos. (Though, I do enjoy all of your tweets, facebook messages, texts & emails)
Anywho, I’m told that this is a benchmark in time that I should wholeheartedly acknowledge and be proud of so…Here we are. 5000 in (& counting). A lot of websites don’t make it to 5000 posts. So I am thankful we’ve mad it thus far… Honestly, I’m just happy to be here… I know that sounds cliche and unlike me, but that’s the simple way of putting it. More than that, I’m glad that people are still reading and educating themselves while enjoying good music without consequences (No Kanye…even though that would’ve made an excellent popshot) and allowing me to provide the means for such. I dont consider myself a blogger, I’m just a being with an opinion that happens to be common amongst the underground overstanders & thinkers. So I write/post articles that I feel are relevant to current conditions surrounding my core demographic… Which is EVERYBODY!
I can be very cynical & sarcastic at times but its all in good fun (or not). So it shouldn’t be taken that seriously (read as: it should be taken VERY seriously) when I write about people you like. Whether it be your favorite artist, movie star, basketball players, ”cross dressing” movie director, or “alien looking” ex-television host, I don’t attack people who I feel don’t deserve it. Take your precious “Officer Bawse” aka Rick Ross for instance; I know Rick Ross is the hottest rapper in the game right now (which DOES NOT mean the best lyricist) so for his business acumen and time spent to get where he is today, I (more…)
Colony Collapse Disorder is a phenomena which has been observed in North America, Europe and to a lesser extent Asia and Australia. It’s the depopulation of bees, primarily European honey bees and related species and has caused a great deal of concern over the potential impacts to pollination of vital crops. The problem has become acute in recent years, with some areas seeing as many as 40% of honey bee colonies die off due to CCD.
Unfortunately, the condition has also been a lightning rod for questionable scientific claims. For some time, a number of groups have latched onto this and claimed that it is likely the result of genetic engineering of plants or other organisms. Despite there being no evidence for this, the Sierra Club stated:
Highly respected scientists believe that exposure to genetically engineered crops and their plant-produced pesticides merit serious consideration as either the cause or a contributory factor to the development and spread of CCD
Well no scientist I have much respect for.
Needless to say, there’s no evidence for this and no reason to presume it would be the case. Others have blamed the feeding of bees with high fructose corn syrup or other sugars from genetically modified plants. This despite the fact that the phenomena has not been shown to have any relationship to this practice. It has also not been shown to be (more…)
Seven languages. Six musical instruments. Two types of dance and two sports. It all adds up to one busy little Queens girl.
Five-year-old Mabou Loiseau’s parents spend $1,500 a week on tutors and lessons – and she spends seven hours a day in some type of instruction, with Sundays off.
She grew up speaking French, Creole and English, but her immigrant parents didn’t want to stop there. She’s also learning Spanish, Mandarin, Arabic and Russian.
“Russian is my most favorite. I just hear something, and if I don’t understand I say, ‘What does that mean?’ and they’ll tell me,” said Mabou, whose Laurelton house is plastered with flashcards in different languages.
She can sing her ABCs in Spanish, count in Mandarin, read fairytales in Russian, and already has an ambitious list of career goals.
“I want to be a firefighter, and I want to be a doctor, and I want to be a dancer, and I want to be a princess,” Mabou said with a smile, sitting shyly on her mom’s lap. “And I want to be an actor, and I want to be a musician, and I want to be a (more…)
Huge news out of the Bay Area, where the new Golden State Warriors ownership has decided to bring the legendary Jerry West into its front office.
After years of putting up with the offense-first work of either Don Nelson or Don Nelson-styled personnel bosses (and that includes enemy combatants like Chris Mullin and Larry Riley), the Warriors are now bringing in a proper el jefe, ready to take on the Lakers, ready to bring the same sort of winner to Golden State as West did in Memphis earlier this decade.
So, look out NBA (!), correct?
Not quite.
West is in Golden State as an advisor, with the focus being on the team’s current coaching search. I’ll let Tim Kawakami of the San Jose Mercury News, the man who broke the news Thursday night, go over all the hyphens:
Jerry West, one of the most respected executives in NBA history, has agreed to (more…)
I have a question, how can African-Americans unite as one powerful fist? Honestly, I do not have the answers but I need to understand why African-Americans are divided in fractions and in our fractions we’re divided? Why do we look down on one another because some people lack knowledge, money, manners, or just education level? How can we measure each other’s “Blackness” by how much Polo clothing one another wears, how many times “nigga” is uttered, how hood we are, or how much pink and purple weave is in our female’s hair? How dare we as people say another African-American is a sold-out because someone decided to go to college, move out of the ghetto, work for a better future or speak proper English? How dare you consider us weird for having a witty sense of humor, dressing differently or for someone just being themselves? Why does a person have to die because sneakers were stepped on, a person was bumped, or a female or male was looked at wrongly with the “mean mug?” No other race kills each other over silly antics and foolish pride. So why do some African-American feel that there is purpose to harm another African-American? All this back and forth degradation is insane. A pair of shoes or a tricked out car isn’t worth (more…)
The Drug Enforcement Administration probe that has ensnared a well-known rap music manager is focusing on the shipment of kilos of cocaine from Los Angeles to New York by a narcotics ring that stashed the drug in “road cases” delivered to recording studios, The Smoking Gun has learned.
Payment for the cocaine was sent back to the West Coast in vacuum-sealed packages that were coated with mustard, the pungent smell of which was intended to conceal from drug-sniffing dogs the scent of narcotics on the currency.
To date, the ongoing investigation–which is being overseen by prosecutors in the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Brooklyn–has resulted in felony charges against about six defendants, several of whom are connected to the rap music industry.
Additionally, an arrest warrant has been issued for James Rosemond, the manager who represents the L.A. rapper The Game. The 46-year-old Rosemond, a convicted felon with a lengthy rap sheet, is pictured in the above mug shot.
In addition to representing The Game (real name: Jayceon Taylor), Rosemond’s Czar Entertainment web site lists Mike Tyson and singer Sean Kingston as clients. His “affiliated artist” roster–whatever that is–includes gangster rapper (more…)
