New Attacks on African Spirituality

by iSpit

On January 13, 2010 Pat Robertson, founder and chairman of the Christian Broadcasting Network,  stated that Haiti “swore a pact to the devil.”  This was one day after a 7.0 earthquake rocked the island nation resulting in massive loss of life. The “pact” Robertson so confidently mentioned to various media outlets was a reference to the Haitian Revolution, more specifically, the Bwa Kayiman (Bois Caiman) Ceremony in August of 1791.

The event is significant because Africans of varying ethnicities joined together in a traditional ceremony to affirm that they would no longer remain enslaved.  The insurrection in Saint-Domingue (modern Haiti), in what would become known as the Haitian Revolution, resulted in the establishment of a Haitian republic in 1804.  The “devil” Robertson spoke of was a reference to the African gods invoked by Haitians to overthrow their French oppressors.

This practice of referring to anything in the realm of African spirituality as evil or devilish is a continuation of the propaganda used by missionaries, slave traders, and colonizers ever since they ventured onto the continent.  Enslaved Africans were treated as a people without culture.  They were reduced to being treated as cargo.  Africans were viewed as heathens because they had their own religious traditions prior to the introduction of Christianity and Islam.  These traditions include ancestor veneration, systems of initiation and respect for the natural environment.

African Traditions in the Americas

African spiritual systems, which fall under the category of African Traditional Religion (ATR), are the traditions that have sustained us since time immemorial.  Enslaved Africans brought these traditions to such places as Haiti, Brazil, Cuba, New Orleans, Florida, and South Carolina. They can be seen in the burial custom of placing items on the (more…)

Catch Up: Da Vinci – Pangea

by iSpit

It’s no secret; DaVinci is one of the most gifted young lyricists around, and with this latest track, “Pangea,” the Fillmore District’s prodigal son has voyaged into spaced-out Philly Sound territory, rhyming over a song, unaltered, by legendary keyboardist Dexter Wansel. The song serves as the final loosie before ramping up for the July release of his forthcoming EP, Feast Or Famine.

Number Of The Day: $72,384 (To Lock Up Youth)

by iSpit

By Angela Caputo

That’s how much the Illinois Department of Corrections estimates that it would cost to incarcerate each 15- and 16-year-old convicted of gun possession if HB2067 is adopted by the state legislature this year.
State Rep. Michael Zalewski — along with some powerful allies from the Chicago Police Department
and Mayor Daley’s office — are trying to keep the measure alive this week before the clock runs out on moving the bill from the House to the Senate on Friday.
Under the bill, 15- and 16-year-olds charged with gun possession within 1,000 feet of a school or park would automatically be transferred to the adult felony courts. Under adult jurisdiction, those convicted would be required to spend at least one year behind bars, under a new mandatory minimum sentence that Zalewski ushered through the General Assembly last year.
Zalewski himself is the first to admit that the punishment is “harsh.” But in our latest investigation, Without A (more…)

The 10 “Hip Hop” Blog & Site Commandments!

by iSpit

Mike Trampe Of HipHopDX, Maad Management & Get Your Buzz Up breaks down the 10 Commandments of being an artist nowadays and how to submit to Blogs & Sites; Biggie Style!

0 “Hip Hop” Blog & Site Commandments

“I been in this game for years, it made me a man,
It’s rules to this shit, I wrote me a plan,
A few good tips for you to get,
Your content online, not thrown into spam”

These are in no specific order, use them, as you would like. They do not have to be used from 1-10.

Rule # Uno: Always send your best work, make sure it is recorded properly, mixed down right and sounding crisp. Nothing more online personalities hate is when someone sends material and says, “This isn’t even my best track”, then why did you send it?

Rule # 2: Build sincere relationships. Treat hip hop relationships like the girl/guy your in love with. You would put in time and work for that person right? Not just expect some the first night you meet. Be sincere when building your relationships, ask them how their day is, don’t always seem like your trying to jam product down their throat.

Rule # 3: Be respectful. Approach peoples how you would want to be approached. Saying “Yo fam, you need to post my music” probably wont get you anywhere. Respect, Respect, Respect!

Rule # 4: When emailing content make sure you send a hi-res picture, one song that is attached and a file share link (ex. Limelinx, sendspace, etc…). If we do not know who you are why would we want to hear a whole mixtape of you? Gain us as fans by sending over individual songs that we can check out, make it easy for us to listen by just clicking play in (more…)

Disposable Coffee Cups, Carryout Containers Filled With Cancer-causing Agents

by iSpit

Millions of people eat and drink from plastic and styrofoam cups and containers every single day, and the US government now admits that many of these consumer products contain known cancer-causing agents. The formaldehyde preservatives found in many disposable coffee cups and foam take-out containers, as well as styrene, another chemical additive used in such products, have both been added to the federal government’s list of known or suspected carcinogens.

The addition of these two chemicals, as well as six others, to the carcinogen list this year was reportedly a reluctant decision made by the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), which has been pressured by the chemical industry for years to delay coming forward with this information. Nevertheless, both formaldehyde and a chemical known as aristolochic acid have now been categorized as “known human carcinogens,” while captafol, cobalt-tungsten carbide, certain glass wool fibers, o-nitrotoluene, riddelliine, and styrene have been dubbed “reasonably anticipated to be human carcinogens.”

“Reducing exposure to cancer-causing agents is something we all want, and the Report on (more…)

G.a.g.e. Money – Dont F*ck With Me Feat DMX (R.I.P. King)

by iSpit

DONT FUCK WITH ME FEAT DMX from Ampm Films on Vimeo.

Gage buries his dog king starring DMX

I first met King in Atlanta at my homie Gage’s old crib in ATL. King sniffed me for 5 mins then got in an attack stance. He didn’t like me very much then and I probably smelled like airport fast food after having just landed, so I dotn blame him. The next meaningful encounter I remember is when he tackled me coming up the front steps to my house… judging by the fact that he didn’t eat me on the spot, I assumed he liked me. King was not your average dog, he was like a person in a dogs body. He had keen senses & was a quick thinker (contrary to the popular belief that dogs are unintelligent) If Gage liked you, King liked you (mostly) but if Gage didn’t like you, King would tear into that *ss something fierce (many smokers can attest to this fact).
I got a call the other day from Gage and was notified of the unexpected passing of King. I felt like a close family member had died. While I have a different overstanding of death than most people, my initial reaction was still the same as the heaven chasers. It was one of instant shock and I could feel my homies pain through the phone. Having lost a dog myself once when I was younger I could semi relate to his pain but losing King wasn’t the equivalent of losing a dog, that was the equivalent of losing a brother. Gage & King grew up together from boyhood into manhood & were inseparable until Kings untimely demise this past Friday. We lost a loyal soldier in King that will be dearly missed.
We always wait until times of misfortune to say this but always remember to cherish those around you because you really don’t know when you might just lose…everything

Wikipedia Is Adding A Love Button

by iSpit

Wikipedia is adding a “WikiLove” button to its pages, it has announced.

The way it works is that Wikipedia users can send each other whimsical or nice badges of appreciations and messages. The reason is that being looked down upon by other editors or not feeling appreciated for their contribution is one of the most-widely cited reasons for not contributing more in Wikipedia’s surveys.

So they’re trying to fix it with a love button. It sounds silly, but it actually sounds like a great idea.

Giving people on the internet more opportunities to show appreciation can only be healthy.

U.S. official: Digital Music Lockers Could Reduce Online Music Piracy

by iSpit

Could digital music lockers in the cloud from the likes of Apple, Amazon and Google could be just the way to curb online music pirating? Some U.S. government officials certainly think so.

As reported by Reuters, Victoria Espinel, the coordinator of U.S. intellectual property enforcement, said that innovation and working with corporate partners is going to be a more successful route to cutting down on the amount of digital music piracy rather than just strict law enforcement here and there.

“If it is possible to construct it so that it cannot be compromised, it may have the effect of reducing piracy by giving value to consumers — the ability to own forever and access almost anywhere — that cannot be obtained with illegal copies,” Espinel said.

“The flexibility of the cloud may help spur the development of compelling legal alternatives.”

One of the most significant and talked-about features announced during Apple CEO Steve Jobs’ keynote at WWDC 2011 on Monday as (more…)
