I Am Not The Radio, I Am Good Music, Vol. 1

by Mr. Blair

Hey you guys, this week’s blog is about good music from the first half of 2011. I love all types of music, from Hip-Hop to oldies. I want to share with you all my love for music from this year alone. I’ve listened to a few good albums, between R&B, Hip-Hop, and Indie Rock. I will be sharing with you guys some of my favorite albums from this year. The following albums are my favorite picks so far of this year and I am going to tell you why. First up…

Bon Iver – Bon Iver

Why – The album is very mellow and relaxing; the heavy usage of auto-tune making Bon Iver a very interesting album to listen to. I enjoy the way Justin Vernon harmonizes with the folklore sound of the band along with the vocal usage of auto-tune which makes this album very unique from others this year.

Favorite tracks – Perth, Minnesota, WI, Michicant, Hinnom, TX, Calgary, and Beth/Rest

Chiddy Bang – Peanut Butter & Swelly

Why – This album is so hip-hip, like this is what the industry needs. The Philadelphian duo (Chiddy and Xaphoon Jones) are an excellent combination of Indie Rock samples blended in with fiery lyricism making this album a true Hip-Hop gem. Chiddy Bang reminds me of Run DMC by complimenting one another with Xaphoon’s funky instrumentals and Chiddy’s amazing lyrics. They’re the best that the industry has to offer, yes the best!

Favorite Tracks – Cameras, Heatwave, Too Much Soul, Baby Roulette, I Can’t Stop, Always, and When You’ve Got Music

Childish Gambino – EP

Why – This kid is talented! He’s a comedian, actor, writer, producer, and rapper. Really, this guy knows how to rap very well. The EP is very intimate, shows his heartbreaks, love for the game and women, and his witty, demanding, lyrical spitting. This EP is one of my favorites from this year.

Favorite Tracks – Be Alone, Freaks And Geeks, Lights Turned On, and extra track: Break (All Of The Lights)

Chill Moody – And They Still Love Us Back

Why – He’s from West Philadelphia; this artist is up and coming in Philly. He’s a laid back lyricist; perfect name for the way he raps, Chill Moody. The instrumentals are very smooth just like Chill, and the concept of the album as a cool love album from the eyes of Chill is a great idea; came out on Valentine’s Day. His style is very cool, fun, and smart; watch out for this kid.

Favorite Tracks – YO Chill! She Ain’t Shit, Hitch Part 1 and 2, The Blacker The Berry, Her Empty Heart, and Hope Your Happy, Bitch

Cults – Cults

Why – This album is next to perfect for an Indie Rock album. The sound of this album is very joyful with beautiful vocals. I’ve listened to this album several times back to back. It’s a dope album; the lead singer’s voice is enchanting. This band gives me that classic 60’s feel with their loud, youthful sound. This is truly one of the (more…)

Minority Men Falling Behind Academically, Study Finds

by iSpit

The College Board report says they also are more likely to face unemployment or incarceration, and it says fixing the problem should be a national priority.

Young black and Latino men lag behind their contemporaries in nearly every measure of educational attainment, with many failing to attend college or earn degrees and large numbers facing the prospect of unemployment or incarceration.
The findings are included in two reports released at a briefing Monday by the College Board Advocacy & Policy Center. It was hosted by Harvard University’s W.E.B. Du Bois Institute for African and African American Research in Cambridge, Mass.
The reports cull census data, academic research and in-depth interviews to paint a bleak picture of the educational experiences of young men across four racial and ethnic groups: African Americans, Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders, Latinos and Native Americans.
Among the findings:
· 28% of African American men and 16% of Latino men aged 25 to 34 had obtained an associate’s degree or higher, (more…)

DARPA Wants Synthetic Biology To Be Fit For Manufacturing

by iSpit

In theory, synthetic life can be programmed to treat cancer, develop vaccines, combat climate change and create alternative fuels. Building life from scratch has been rather difficult. It took J. Craig Venter, a biologist and entrepreneur, 15 years to build the first synthetic cell made with synthetic DNA. In Venter’s lab, researchers are mixing concoctions of DNA that could one day end up in the next generation of vaccines and fuels.

Scientists will have to crack the manufacturing problem if they ever want to bring synthetic biology out of the lab and into the real world. It takes a long time for scientists to tinker with biological materials and turn them into artificial life. Researchers at the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) want to take biology experiments and turn them into an engineering platform that is fit for manufacturing cells.

The DARPA initiative is called Living Foundries Industry Day.

The agency’s program manager Alicia Jackson told Technology Review that the program would help create new materials that could be used for solar and electronic materials. “We [at DARPA] are that genie in a bottle that will (more…)

Movie Theater Strikes Back Against Angry Texting Girl

by iSpit

A woman Austin movie theater was warned twice to stop texting during a screening. When she refused to comply, the staff of the Alamo Drafthouse kicked her out.

She was pissed, and left an angry voice mail on the theater’s phone line.

So as Yahoo’s The Lookout reports, the Alamo Drafthouse took the recording and turned it into a spot that warns customers against using their cell phones. Now they show it before every R-rated movie.

But the hilarious part was that they also transcribed the call, stumbles and all — including what sounds like “Magnited States of America.”  The words show up as the girl talks. Embarrassing.

Apple Drops Subscription Rules That Threatened Music Services

by iSpit

Remember those new app rules Apple implemented a few months back that freaked out every subscription music service with an iPhone app?

Well, looks like Apple has backed down. According to MacRumors, the company has “quietly changed its guidelines” and will no longer demand that developers offer the same subscription terms from in-app sales as sales outside the app, nor are they required to offer in-app subscriptions at all.

When Apple introduced the ability to sign up subscribers using a “buy” button from within the app, it proposed that any resulting subscriptions be shared 30% with Apple. The kicker was that it also demanded that developers offering subscriptions had to add an in-app option, and offer the same terms regardless of whether subscriptions come from within the app or external to it.

That means developers would be able to just add a 30% markup to in-app subscription rates to cover Apple’s cut, or not offer an (more…)

Radiation is Already Killing Babies

by iSpit

Newborn babies are the most vulnerable of all beings. Vulnerability says it all when it comes to a newborn infant. Children deserve the best medical treatment from the best form of medicine human intelligence can implement but what they get is governmental interference and neglect. Below we see the first information coming in that the radiation that the government is saying is safe and harmless and of very low concentration is already killing babies on the west coast of the United States where death rates are spiking.

Who cares about the babies that die? Our government certainly doesn’t! It is outrageous and tragic that our government and many of our doctors don’t care. Certainly we will never see medical officials caring about the deaths of infants caused by vaccines on a regular basis. The government’s identity has grown to such beastly proportions these days that everyone who is not “them” is an enemy, even the babies.

What do medical officials really care when a baby dies from vaccine complications? What do FDA officials do to block out the guilt and pain of knowing that they caused a lifetime of suffering for a young child when they allow dental mercury amalgam (toxic waste dumps) to be put right in their mouths? Do they care about peoples’ iodine deficiencies that leave them more vulnerable to the radioactive iodine from Fukushima? Do they care about the (more…)
