Mark Zuckerberg Used To Buy Shareholders’ Voting Rights For $100

by iSpit

Zuckerberg 2016?

Facebook co-founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg has a 28.4 percent in his company but also controls 57.1 percent of the voting shares. He pulled this off by handing out $100 bills.
Facebook co-founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg is one good negotiator. As I noted when Facebook filed for its $5 billion initial public offering (IPO) last week: the numbers show that Zuckerberg has a 28.4 percent stake in the company, but that he also has voting control over at least 57.1 percent of Class B shares through a chain of agreements with other shareholders. It turns out Zuckerberg gave shareholders $100 a piece for ceding voting control to him.

So, how did he pull that off? It turns out when Facebook amended its IPO filing yesterday, Zynga wasn’t the only extra detail being underlined. Here’s an excerpt from the FORM OF “TYPE 1″ HOLDER VOTING AGREEMENT document filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). Notice the last sentence:
The Stockholder holds shares of Common Stock of the Company. This Agreement, among other things, requires the Stockholder to vote all such shares of Common Stock and all shares of capital stock of the Company which such Stockholder currently owns or hereafter acquires or as to which he otherwise exercises voting or dispositive authority (together all such shares referred to in this sentence and any securities of the Company issued with respect to, upon conversion of, or in exchange or substitution of such shares, and any other voting securities of the Company subsequently acquired by the Stockholder, the “Shares”) in the manner set forth herein. This agreement is being entered into in exchange for a payment of $100 in cash from the Proxyholder to Stockholder and for other good and valuable consideration, the sufficiency of which is hereby acknowledged and agreed.

In other words, early Facebook investors signed away their voting rights to Zuckerberg in exchange for $100 cash. Multiple investors signed these agreements, including Napster co-founder Sean Parker, Facebook’s first president, and several of the company’s venture capital backers (Accel Partners and DST Global come to mind).

While the $100 payments were likely a formality, it still shows how persuasive Zuckerberg was in convincing investors he really knows what’s best for Facebook. Mind you, by this point Zuckerberg likely had changed his mind and no longer wanted to sell Facebook to a bigger company.

In Chile Desert, Huge Telescope Begins Galaxy Probe

by iSpit

A powerful telescope affording a view of the universe unmatched by most ground-based observatories gazed onto distant galaxies for the first time Monday from deep in Chile‘s Atacama desert.

The Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array, a joint project between Canada, Chile, the European Union, Japan, Taiwan and the United States, officially opened for astronomers after a decade of planning and construction.

The world’s biggest astronomy project, ALMA is described as the most powerful millimeter/submillimeter-wavelength telescope ever and the most complex ground-based observatory.

The first images arrived at the mega-site in northern Chile from 12 of the 66 radio telescopes.

“Today marks the recognition of the successful coalition of thousands of people from all over the world all working with the same goal: to build the world’s most advanced radio telescope to see into the universe’s coldest, darkest places, where galaxies and stars and perhaps the building blocks of life are created,” said ALMA director Thijs de Graauw.

ALMA differs from visible-light and infrared telescopes by using an array of linked antennas acting as a single giant telescope, and detects much longer wavelengths than those of visible light, rendering images unlike most others of the cosmos.

Although similar instruments are used in other locations, ALMA‘s are 10 to 100 times more powerful than others currently in operation, said ALMA scientist Lars Nyman.

ALMA‘s location also provides a unique advantage, because of the extreme aridity of the Atacama and its altitude of 5,000 meters (16,400 feet). It is in the same region as the European Extremely Large Telescope, due to begin operation in 2018.

The first images were of the Antennae Galaxies, a pair of colliding galaxies with dramatically distorted shapes some 70 million light years away in the Corvus constellation.

ALMA‘s view “reveals something that cannot be seen in visible light: the clouds of dense cold gas from which new stars form,” according to ALMA. “This is the best submillimeter-wavelength image ever made of the Antennae Galaxies.”

Images like “will be vital in helping us understand how galaxy collisions can trigger the birth of new stars,” said ALMA.

Project scientist Richard Hills told AFP that the results were “better than expected.”

“They’re really beautifully clear, there’s nothing that messes up the data… it really shows us what is going on inside their galaxies we had been looking for,” the former Cambridge University scientist added.

“We’ve been waiting a very long time to get to the point where ALMA is really able to do science. Some people have been working on this project for more than 20 years. So, it has been a long road, but all the bits and pieces that we need to make this telescope work, now come together.”

One of the projects chosen for ALMA observations was that of David Wilner of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

“My team hunts for the building blocks of solar systems, and ALMA is uniquely equipped to spot them,” Wilner said.

His target is AU Microscopii, a star 33 light years away that is only one percent of the age of the sun.

“We will use ALMA to image the ‘birth ring’ of planetesimals that we believe orbits this young star,” he said. “We hope to discover clumps in these dusty asteroid belts, which can be the markers of unseen planets.”

Masami Ouchi of the University of Tokyo will use ALMA to observe Himiko, a very distant galaxy churning out at least 100 suns’ worth of stars every year and surrounded by a giant, bright nebula.

“Other telescopes cannot show us why Himiko is so bright and how it has developed such a huge, hot nebula when the ancient universe all around it is so calm and dark,” said Ouchi.

Kodak Eyes Chapter 11: Patent Sale Or Bust

by iSpit

Kodak’s patents could come in handy in the ongoing patent wars. All smartphones have digital photography technology.

Eastman Kodak is prepping for a Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing that could put an interesting twist in the patent wars.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Kodak is looking for $1 billion in debtor-in possession financing, which keeps companies running in a restructuring, with the idea that it would sell its 1,100 patents in an auction.

In other words, Kodak is betting that it can land capital like Nortel Networks did—via a bankruptcy court auction. Kodak is trying to sell the patents to avoid a bankruptcy filing.

Kodak’s patents could come in handy in the ongoing patent wars. All smartphones have digital photography technology.

In a recent research note, Rafferty Capital analyst Mark Kaufman noted:

In an effort to accelerate the monetization of it intellectual property, Kodak has been seeking the sale of its 1,100 digital imaging patents since late summer. There has been serious interest by various companies, but delays in the final determination by the U.S. ITC in the patent infringement action brought by Kodak against Apple and RIM, has potentially delayed a meeting of the minds on price.

According to Kaufman, Kodak could eye a joint venture for its intellectual property.

Firm Turns Shipping Pallets Into Transitional Homes For Refugees

by iSpit

Every year over 21 million shipping pallets end up in a landfill. Used worldwide to ship goods of all kinds in mass quantities, a Brooklyn-based design firm looked past the intended use of a pallet and saw a versatile, recyclable, sustainable and inexpensive building material that could be used to address another issue: improving housing quality for refugees.

The inspiration behind I-Beam design firm’s Pallet House Project came from a mind-boggling statistic that 84 percent of the world’s refugees could be housed with a year’s worth of repurposed American pallets.

A pallet is the perfect material to provide a better standard of living — they are readily available in most countries and they can be used first to carry aid to displaced people in the form of clothing, food and medical supplies (to name but a few) and then recycled into shelters.

The average refugee stays in a refugee camp for seven years, and the Pallet House (a 250 square-foot structure composed of 100 reused pallets),  is a sturdier alternative to the tent shelters most common in refugee camps. Additionally, it can be easily converted from a temporary or emergency shelter to a permanent residence with the addition of more sturdy construction materials found in the area.

The houses are easy to assemble: once the pallets arrive, it only takes four to five people to nail together the house, and it can be built in less than a week. At first, when more standard construction materials are less available, the structures can be put together with the help of temporary supplies like tarps to keep the inside dry until materials from the surrounding area can make a more solid roof.

As time passes, pallets can be fitted with add-ons like insulation or plywood for the interiors(this can all be done prior to shipping as well), and stucco and plaster or roofing tiles for the exterior, if/when the materials become available. Due to the flexibility of the design, each occupant can build a shelter that fits their specific needs.

Though the Pallet House was originally conceived as a temporary transitional shelter for refugees making their way back to Kosovo, and has since been used to house people uprooted by natural disasters, famines and wars,  I-Beam has widened the scope of the Pallet House to include a much bigger population by using the module as a pre-fab solution to affordable housing everywhere.

An estimated one billion people live in substandard housing, and I-Beam believes that the Pallet House could help to provide better conditions for people in need around the world.

The Pallet House has already turned many heads for its innovative take on temporary housing, and it took home the Architecture for Humanity Award in 1999. I-Beam has built Pallet structures in New York, Indiana, and the Architecture Triennial in Milan and have been active recently in Haiti and Pakistan.

Floyd Mayweather Jr. Sentenced To 90 days In Jail

by iSpit

Unless she looks like THIS… he didnt do it..

Boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. (Grand Rapids) was sentenced today to 90 days in jail after pleading guilty to reduced battery domestic violence and harassment charges before a Las Vegas judge.

The 34-year-old Mayweather also was ordered to complete 100 hours of community service and pay a $2,500 fine.

The plea deal avoids trial on felony allegations that he hit his ex-girlfriend and threatened two of their children during an argument at her home in September 2010.

Prosecutor Lisa Luzaich told Judge Melissa Saragosa that Mayweather has been in trouble before and hasn’t been punished.

“He just continually gets himself into trouble, and he is able to get himself out of it as well,” she said. “Essentially, it is because he is who he is and is able to get away with everything.

“The only thing that’s going to get this man’s attention is incarceration.”

Mayweather stood still in a striped olive vest and made no reaction when the judge imposed the sentence. He was told to report to jail on Jan. 6.

Mayweather and his manager, Leonard Ellerbe, declined to comment outside the courtroom.

Attorney Karen Winckler had argued that the public would benefit more if Mayweather performs 100 hours of community service with children. Winckler said she wanted to confer with Mayweather before deciding whether to appeal.

The judge said she was swayed by Mayweather’s admission that he hit Harris and twisted her arm, and that two of their children, ages 9 and 10, witnessed the attack.

Saragosa noted that police reported Mayweather threatened to kill or make Harris “disappear,” and that their 10-year-old son ran from the house and jumped a back gate to fetch security. Mayweather had taken cellphones belonging to Harris and the two boys, she said.

“Punishment is appropriate,” Saragosa said. “No matter who you are, you have consequences to your actions when they escalate to this level of violence.”

DoomOz: ‘Lean On Me’ Actor (Sams) Arrested for Buying 200 Pounds of Weed

by iSpit

What would Joe Clark say about this? You shouldve just jumped Sams…

The guy who starred as troubled youth Thomas Sams in the 1989 classicLean On Me” was arrested in Arizona for allegedly buying 200 pounds of pot from an undercover cop this week.

Jermaine “Huggy” Hopkins has been charged with two felony counts of possessing, transporting and trying to sell marijuana.

According to police, the 38-year-old actor lives in North Carolina … but traveled to AZ to make the drug deal on Tuesday.

Cops in Maricopa County say they set up the sting operation … and after Hopkins took possession of the dope, they pulled over his SUV and arrested him. Cops say they found $100k in cash in the ride.

Officials later searched Hopkins’ Arizona apartment and claim they found an additional 100 pounds of weed.

Police say Hopkins told them he got involved in the drug deal to provide a nice Christmas for his family.

Hopkins is being held on $35,000 bond. If convicted, he faces up to 5 years in prison.

Moving a Robotic Arm With Just a Thought (Video)

by iSpit

Reaching for out cup of coffee or moving a computer mouse is easy for most of us. But for Tim Hemmes, who became paralyzed in a motorcycle accident, it was a heartfelt moment for him to be able to reach out to his girlfriend for the first time in 7 years through a thought-controlled robotic arm.

Scientists and doctors of University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine conducted the study with Hemmes to see if a person with spinal cord injury could move an external apparatus using their thoughts. The brain-controlled prosthetic arm system uses a brain-computer interface similar to the one we saw a few days ago with monkeys moving and feeling with virtual arms.

A postage stamp-sized electrocorticography grid, adapted from seizure-mapping brain electrode arrays, was surgically placed on the motor cortex of Hemmes’s brain. The surgeons ran wires from the chip under the skin of Hermes’s neck to exit at his upper chest so it could hook up with computer cables.

For the next four weeks Hemmes would connect the neurons of his motor cortex to a computer that would learn to recognize motion from his thought patterns. To do this, Hemmes was given test to move a ball to a zone on a 2D plane and eventually moved up to interacting in a 3D space. At first, Hemmes would think of body motions to move the ball; for example, bending his elbow to move right or wiggling his thumb to go left.

Later, Hemmes was able to just mentally visualize where he wanted the ball to go and complete the tasks without any computer assistance. This ability for “100 percent brain control” eventually allowed Hemmes to complete the same tasks with the robotic arm.

The team is gearing up for the next step of its research by recruiting people for a trial of a new electrode grid that can listen to individual neurons. They also plan to use two grids so that the patient can control arm movements and fine hand motions. The team also hopes that the technology could go wireless or even have brain-computer interfaces connect with muscle stimulating devices attached the paralyzed person’s own limbs.

N*ggas Ruin Everything: Mercedes Discontinues The “Maybach” Brand

by iSpit

This is his  U+2191.svg fault

“Now, If only I could get black people (read as: n*ggas) to discontinue Tyler Perry…” – Blair

N*ggas already ruined Tommy Hilfiger, Polo, Nautica, Cristal,  Community, TupacMyspace, Facebook, etc.

What are n*ggas gonna ruin next? iPhones?

Mercedes-Benz’s ultra-luxury Maybach brand will be no more starting in 2013, according to the Detroit News.

While having a century’s worth of history, the Maybach marquee was revived in the U.S. market in 2003 to compete against Rolls-Royce and Bentley. During that time, the brand essentially sold only one model in two lengths: the Type 57 and Type 62. Amenities included a fully reclining rear seat, electrotransparent sunroof, rear refrigerator and standard champagne flutes.

A range-topping $1.38 million convertible variant, the Maybach Landaulet, was recently added to the lineup.

Despite the glitz, the Maybach lineup is essentially gussied-up Mercedes-Benz S-Class models. The Maybach brand also wasn’t held in the same regard as Rolls-Royce or Bentley, despite its storied history.

Instead of focusing more resources on Maybach, Mercedes has decided to expand the S-Class lineup. The redesigned fifth-generation S-Class will launch later next year with six variants, according to the Detroit News. That’s nearly double the option set offered today, and it will likely lead to more expensive sticker prices on the top Mercedes.

Last year, Maybach only sold about 200 cars compared with Rolls-Royce’s 2,700 and Bentley’s 5,100 vehicles, according to the Detroit News.

Even though the $350,000-plus Maybachs aren’t what we’d call daily drivers, the brand’s parent company was holding off on pulling the plug. But in the stratospheric showroom where Maybach plays with Bentley (owned by Volkswagen) and Rolls-Royce (a subsidiary of BMW), the Maybach was a long-time underachiever. At a price point where even one-percenters are challenged, only about 3,000 of the vehicles were sold since the brand was resurrected a decade ago.

This week the axe fell, when Daimler Chairman Dieter Zetsche told a German newspaper that the brand would be discontinued in 2013. “We came to the clear conclusion that the sales chances for the Mercedes brand were better than Maybach’s,” he said.

For those who may be waiting for that Maybach or order, there is good news: The existing supply will be delivered until it is exhausted.

Guess this is never coming out —>

Watch D.O.G.S. (Dads Of Great Students)

by iSpit

Nearly 200,000 fathers and significant male role models are getting involved at hundreds of schools across America through an effective and exciting program called Watch D.O.G.S. (Dads of Great Students). Watch D.O.G.S. is a program of the Kansas City-based, National Center for Fathering.

The program’s success is linked to a simple and easy-to- use model. Watch D.O.G.S simply asks men to invest one day a year in the lives of their children by visiting a child’s school. Watch D.O.G.S. shows schools and parent organizations how to reach out to men and how to structure their program so that it is sustainable and user-friendly for parents, teachers and administrators.

With staff in Chicago, Atlanta, Kansas and Arkansas, the Watch D.O.G.S. program is found in almost every type of school environment, from rural to urban. You can now find their program in over 2,100 schools in 41 states. The program is K-12, but mostly conducted in elementary and middle schools with some high schools participating.

As co-members of National PTA’s MORE Alliance (Men Organized to Raise Engagement), the Black Star Project is proud to work alongside of Watch D.O.G.S. in securing the engagement of dads, uncles, grandfathers and other significant men in our communities.

Visit their website at www.fathers.com/watchdogs to see their men in action or for more information, contact Michael Knowles at mknowles@fathers.com  or call 1-888-540-DOGS (3647).

Mumia Abu Jamal – Tea Parties And Protests

by iSpit

Mumia Abu Jamal – Tea Parties And Protests

As the Occupy Wall street movement gains steam and inspires similar protests worldwide, defenders of the so-called Tea Party have decried the Occupation activists as “law breakers” “radicals”, and even “un-American” (unlike themselves, of course).

One imagines that such objections, coming from Tea Partiers, are meant to contrast them not only from themselves, but from the original groups of Americans who made the term, ‘Tea Party‘, history.

In this version, they were nice, law-abiding folk, engaged in a little, oh, patriotic disagreement.
Suffice it to say, it didn’t exactly happen that way.

The late great historian, Howard Zinn, in his groundbreaking: ‘A People’s History of the United States‘: 1492-Present (Perennial Classics: 2003), recounts the Tea Party as a great event not only of rebellion, but law-breaking. Imagine the worth of crates of imported tea, broken into, and tossed into the Boston Harbor. The property of local merchants–destroyed. Why? Because of the taxes added on, which made Americans angry at such high prices for something they considered a staple. It was also a thumb in the eye of the British.

The British government responded to this provocation by passing Parliament’s Coercive Acts, they closed down Boston‘s port, dissolved the local colonial government, and brought in armed troops, virtually establishing martial law (Zinn 67).

Now–which contemporary group more closely resembles their American ancestors? The Tea Party or Occupy Wall Street?

And lest we miss the big lesson, women played a pivotal role in these protests as well. John Adams’ wife, Abigail, wrote of a “coffee party”, led by nearly 100 women, who, angry at the high coffee prices at a Boston store, marched down to the warehouse, and demanded the “stingy” merchant surrender his keys.

When he refused, Adams writes:

“Upon which one of them seized him by his neck and tossed him into the cart. Upon his finding no quarter, he delivered the keys when they tipped up the cart and discharged him; then opened the warehouse, hoisted out the coffee themselves, put it into the trunks and drove off. A large concourse of men stood amazed, silent spectators of the whole transaction.” (Zinn 110)

‘Law-breakers?’ ‘Radicals?’ ‘Un-American?’

Well, they broke the law, certainly, for, during colonial days, English law ruled. Were they radicals? Probably.

Were they un-American?

They destroyed private property. They reacted to the rich getting richer by looting their warehouses.

Sounds pretty American to me.

(Zinn 67).

A ver…

A New Image For Black Men

by iSpit
Recognizing International Men’s Day gives me a sense of brotherhood with all men around the globe, so I want to salute my  brothers of all races and ethnicities: Black, White, Asian, Hispanic, Indian, Native American, Arabic, and whoever else may be out there. And when you think of the international community of men as a brotherhood, you realize that our purpose as brothers is to try and help all men become all that God created them to be. To try and help each and every man fulfill his God-given purpose on this earth. Sadly, when you look at the history of the world,  that has typically not been the case. Instead of lifting each other up, men have held each other down.

We’ve used each other’s race or ethnicity or nationality or religion as an excuse to oppress and discriminate against one another. Some say the answer is to become “color-blind” but while I understand what they’re saying, I don’t think we need to be color-blind. God made us different colors, different races, different ethnicities. Your ethnicity is a part of who you are; it’s not all you are, it’s not the most important  part of who you are, but it’s a significant part of who you are.

And if I have to ignore the fact that you’re Asian or that you’re Native American in order to be able to treat you with dignity and respect and love, then I’m not much of a man. God gave us these distinctions and created such variety within mankind to enhance our experience as human beings. So rather than viewing our differences as a reason to hate one another and abuse one another, we need to view our differences as opportunities to learn from one another and to strengthen one another, to strengthen the whole human family.

But again, throughout history, particularly here in America, that has not been the case. And you can see how destructive it can be when men behave as enemies rather than as brothers. We all know about the atrocities of slavery and the abuse of the Native American, but even though those institutions ended nearly 150 years ago, we can still see some of their negative effects. You see it in people’s mentalities, you see it in the economic and educational disparities between Black and
White. You still see it woven into the fabric of some of the institutions of this country.

“Oh, but brother, we’ve got a Black president now, race doesn’t matter. We’re a post-racial society now.”

Yes, we do have a Black president, and I thank God for President Barack Obama and for Oprah and all the many wonderful success stories we have in the African-American community. But despite their successes, despite the fact that we as a nation have come a very long way in race relations, I’m here to tell you that race does still matter and that racism is still an obstacle that needs to be removed if we as men – all men – are going to truly be brothers.

If race doesn’t matter – Why are 74 percent of the people sent to prison for drug offenses Black even though only 13 percent of the drug users and abusers in America are Black. I mean, if race didn’t matter, then only 13 percent of the people sent to prison for drug abuse would be Black.
If race doesn’t matter – Why don’t we ever hear about cops maiming  and shooting and killing innocent White people like we see them do every so often to innocent Black people like Sean Bell, Abner Louima or Amadou Diallo? With White people, the cops seem to have patience; they don’t jump to conclusions; they give them the benefit of the doubt. But too often with us, they assume the worse. But of course, race doesn’t matter.

If race doesn’t matter – Why do you get a greater punishment for possessing crack cocaine, which is more prevalent among Blacks, than powder cocaine, which is more prevalent among Whites, even though they’re the exact same drugPresident Obama recently narrowed the gap between the punishments but he wasn’t able to eliminate it entirely (100:1, 18:1).

If race doesn’t matter – Why even when Black people and White people have comparable credit are Blacks rejected twice as often as Whites for small business loans. If race doesn’t matter.

If race doesn’t matter – Why does a White man with only a high school diploma earn the same amount of money as a Black man with a college degree. If race doesn’t matter.

The fact is, race does matter and it’s been used and is still being used as a reason to hold us back. So I challenge my brothers, all my brothers, but particularly my White brothers to push to change these unjust laws and practices. Because remember, your purpose as a man is to help us – and all men – become all we can be.

Basically, whatever you think about yourself is what you’re going to be. And many of us, in our heart of hearts, believe that a real Black man, an authentic Black man, a real ‘ni…. is a pimp, a thug or a gangsta. And we’re destroying ourselves, our families and our people because of it. It’s to the point that some of our young men who have two college-educated parents in the home and who are middle-class or upper-class are dumbing themselves down to “keep it real” to be what they think is an “authentic Black man.”

But why? Why do many of our men believe they can only be athletes or rappers or comedians or pimps, gangstas or thugs. In 1965, Daniel Patrick Moynihan, a white politician and sociologist, wrote a now famous report called the Moynihan Report. He wrote the report for President Lyndon Johnson and other United States government officials. And in that report, Moynihan wrote that the problems that plague the Black community and particularly the Black family are rooted in slavery.

He said slavery in America was the worst form of slavery in the history of the world and that it so damaged the psyche of Black men that it was still affecting us more than 100 years later. Now Malcolm X said the same thing, E. Franklin Frazier said it too, and our Afrocentric brothers have been saying that for years. But this white high-ranking government official said it too. Basically, he said in addition to all the outside obstacles that are holding them back, too many Black men have a slave mentality.

And if you’re sitting here today thinking that you’re a pimp, a gangsta or a thug, you’ve got a slave mentality. You’re really nothing but a slave. You might bling-bling, you might have a nice whip, you might wear $150 sneakers, but you really ain’t nothing but a slave. And brother, we love you and we need you to rise up from being a slave and become a man.

But as I’ve been saying all night, I’m a truth teller. I’m here to speak the truth. And the truth is that a pimp is not a real Black man, a gangsta is not a real Black man, a thug is not a real Black man. The truth is that you don’t have to “slang crack rock or have a wicked jump shot” to make it. The truth is that you can be much more than an athlete or a rapper.

One of the greatest things that was stolen from us as a people was our history. History is so important, because history tells you where you’ve been, tells you what your ancestors have accomplished and that if they could accomplish that, you can accomplish it. It builds pride in who you are, in your culture, your race, your nationality. That’s why from Grades 1 thru 12 you’re bombarded with American history.

But today, in 2010, it’s time for a new destiny for Black men. It’s time for a new image of Black men, a new model. We’re throwing out the slave master’s model, the model that’s got us filling up the prisons and the graveyards, the model that’s got us killing one another and playing games instead of taking care of business, the model that’s got us using and abusing our women and children instead of loving and protecting them. It’s time to regain our history and be real Black men.
But what is a real Black man? Well, there’s a book that mentions Black men and Black nations well over 100 times, and I’ll use this book tonight not to promote a certain religion but to promote truth. The Bible is regarded all over the world, by people of all races, as a book of truth. It’s the best-selling book of all-time, it’s been translated into nearly every language in the world, it’s so respected that we use it as a symbol of truth in our courts of law, and we have our nation’s commander-in-chief take the Presidential oath with his hand on it. There may be different interpretations, but no book is as widely associated with truth as The Bible.

So what does the book of truth say a real Black man is? First, brothers, it says he’s awesome. That’s right, awesome. I’m not making this up. In Isaiah chapter 18, verse 2, Ethiopians are called “a people terrible from their beginnings onward.” The Hebrew word that’s translated “terrible” is Yare’, which means awesome. It’s the same word used to describe God several times in the Psalms and other books – the great and terrible God, or great and awesome God.

And it doesn’t say you’re awesome because you’re dunking a basketball, or because you’re producing a hot hip-hop beat. In Acts Chapter 7 verse 22, it says “Moses was learned in all the wisdom of the Egyptians.” The Bible says Ethiopians and Egyptians were sons of Ham, and Ham is regarded as the Father of the Black race. So this book of truth says Black men are awesome and Black men had wisdom. It doesn’t say they were flunking out of school, doesn’t say they were wearing their pants down on their thighs, doesn’t say they were making babies they didn’t take care of. It says they had wisdom. Brothers, if you want to be a real Black man, you have to be a man of wisdom.

The book of truth also says Black men were readers. What? Too many of our young men are growing up thinking reading and education are not for Black men. I call my wife “Bay” because my dad calls my mom “Bay.” “Bay, how’s this tie look?” or “Bay, can you come here for a second.” I like to have a tooth pick in my mouth because after dinner every night, my dad used to put a tooth pick in his mouth. He never told me specifically to call my wife Bay or to chew on a tooth pick. I just naturally picked it up from being around him. Well, for the 246 years of slavery here in America, it was against the law for Black folks to read.

But I’m telling you about a book that says otherwise. It’s a book that says anyone who tells you reading ain’t for Black people is ignorant to the history of Black people. Because in Acts Chapter 8, the apostle Philip met an Ethiopian Eunuch. And when he found this Ethiopian brother, he was reading. He was reading from the book of Isaiah, which is in the Bible. This was more than 2000 years ago, folks. So the slave masters, the ones who wanted to keep us down and make us clowns, told us reading wasn’t for Black folks, but the book of truth tells us that more than 2000 years ago, Black people, Black men, were reading.

Brothers, we need to read, and we need to teach our sons and the boys of this younger generation to read, read, read. Because a real man is not only strong physically; he’s also strong mentally. See, in slavery, we were taught to be strong physically but weak mentally. Strong so you could do more work in the fields, but weak so you never thought about rising up beyond slavery. But a real man is not only strong physically, but mentally as well. The strongest men we’ve produced in this country, the men who made it possible for us to be here today – Richard Allen, Frederick Douglass, Marcus Garvey, Martin Luther King – were all readers. So read the Bible, read the Autobiography of Malcolm X, read Roots by Alex Haley, read African and African-American history, read whatever you want. But read. Real men read.

So the book of truth tells us that Black men are awesome men of wisdom, that Black men are readers. And it also says Black men are spiritual. A real man is not only strong physically, but he’s strong mentally and spiritually. In addition to a body and a mind, brothers, you’ve got a spirit. And if your spirit is weak and feeble, you’ll be weak and feeble. You won’t be a man of your word, you’ll tell your wife one thing and do another, tell your kids one thing and do another, you won’t be able to control yourself, you’ll do things you know you shouldn’t do, things you wish you could stop doing, nobody will be able to trust you. Heck, you won’t even trust yourself. Privately, deep down inside, you’ll be ashamed. But when you’re strong spiritually, you’re a real man.

And in Numbers Chapter 10 verse 29, it tells us about a man named Raguel. He was the father in law of the great prophet Moses. Moses married an Ethiopian woman, so we’re going to assume Raguel was Ethiopian as well. Raguel means “friend of God.” Brothers, if you want to be strong, be a friend of God. And just like you do with all friends, talk to Him, learn about him, study Him, do things that make him happy. You see too, as you study about Raguel, who was also called Jethro, that he was a family man. He had seven daughters and he treated them like princesses. He was intimately involved in their lives, they felt secure being under his roof, in his presence. So part of being a friend of God is taking care of your children. And I don’t mean just buying them expensive sneakers or taking them to ballgames and amusement parks. I mean being there for them every single day – teaching them, training them, talking with them, laughing with them, enjoying them.

So brothers, we’re forgetting about the Black man as pimp, player, gangsta, mack, thug – and
moving on to the Black man as Awesome, Wise, Strong Mentally and Strong Spiritually.

But there’s one more thing, in Genesis Chapter 10, verse 8, the Bible tells us that the Black man is a builder. He’s a creator. It tells us about a brother named Nimrod. Nimrod was the son of Cush, grandson of Ham. Cush is a Hebrew word that means Black; it’s basically the same as the Greek word Ethiopia. And the Bible says that Nimrod was a “mighty hunter before the Lord.” Now this was right after God had destroyed everyone and everything on the earth – except Noah, his three sons and their wives – with a flood. So they were starting over. They had hit rock bottom. They needed somebody to step up and take charge, somebody to set things in order. And this Black man, Nimrod, did it. It says in verse 10 that he built kingdoms, that he got the people back on track. He didn’t just go for his. He didn’t mope, give up or feel sorry for himself. He took responsibility for making sure his people were taken care of.

And that’s what God‘s telling us as Black men to do. Because when you look at us today – Oh yeah, thank God for the President and all the successes we’ve had as a people – but overall, we’re on the bottom. We’re last in every measurable category of productivity – we’ve got the highest rates of fatherlessness, of divorce, of HIV infection, of unemployment, of dropping out of school. And we need some men to step up and be like Nimrod, to take charge, to set things in order, to get our people back on track, to teach this next generation about real manhood, to build our people back up to being “terrible” or awesome.

So brothers, let’s believe and be what the book of truth says we are, not what the slavemaster said we were. Let’s be men of wisdom, let’s be readers, let’s be friends of God, and let’s be men who take responsibility for building up our people.

Then, in the future, when we come together at the International table of brotherhood, we won’t come begging for help, we won’t come as a problem to be solved, as a quandary to be fixed. We’ll come as real Black men. We’ll come as brothers.
