Dante Terrell Smith is more commonly known as Mos Def also known as Yasin Bey aka Black Dante aka Pretty Flaco aka Flaco Bey aka The Mighty Mos Def aka Bezé

Regarded as one of hip-hop’s most introspective and insightful artists, Mos Def has shaped a career that transcends music genres and artistic medium. A child of hip-hop’s Golden Era, the native Brooklynite spent his childhood imbedded in the culture surrounding him as well as absorbing knowledge from across the artistic spectrum.

With the release of “Universal Magnetic” (1996) Mos became an underground favorite in the hip hop world, leading to his legendary collaboration with Talib Kweli. The two formed Black Star whose debut album, Mos Def and Talib Kweli Are Black Star, would become one of the most critically acclaimed hip-hop albums. Mos followed that release with his 1999 solo debut, Black On Both Sides, which was certified gold and credited by critics as bringing hip-hop back to its soapbox roots.

As with his music, Mos has demonstrated insight and passion with his acting career, appearing in Spike Lee’s Bamboozled, MTV‘s Carmen: A Hip Hopera, 2002‘s critically acclaimed Monster’s Ball, Showtime, and the 2002 romantic comedy Brown Sugar, for which he received an NAACP Image Award nomination. In addition Mos has served as the host, music supervisor and co-executive producer for the HBO series Def Poetry and served as a writer, producer and actor on the MTV sketch comedy series Lyricist Lounge. Mos completed his Broadway debut in 2002 in the Tony nominated, Pulitzer Prize winning, Topdog/Underdog. Mos re-teamed with Topdog playwright, Suzan Lori Parks and director George Wolfe for the off-Broadway play, Fucking A, for which he was awarded an Obie Award.

In 2003, Mos Def starred in Paramount Pictures’ The Italian Job, alongside Ed Norton, Mark Wahlberg and Charlize Theron. Last year Mos Def starred opposite Alan Rickman in the critically acclaimed HBO movie Something the Lord Made, for which he has received a 2004 Emmy Nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor In A Miniseries Or A Movie. Def was also nominated for both a Golden Globe Award (Best Performance by an Actor in a Mini-Series or Motion Picture) and Golden Satellite Award (Best Actor in a Miniseries or a Motion Picture Made for Television) for the same role He can currently be been seen on the big screen in the feature film The Woodsman, with Kevin Bacon, Benjamin Bratt, Eve and Kyra Sedgwick. The New York Times said of his performance, “I hope we don’t have to wait too much longer to see him in a big-screen leading role,” and USA Today heralded him as “the movie’s best performance.” In addition, he recently completed work on Spyglass Entertainment’s The Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy, set for release in May 2005. In the film, an adaptation of the classic Douglas Adams Science Fiction novel, Def will star as hero “Ford Prefect.”

Mos Def released his highly-anticipated and critically acclaimed sophomore solo release, The New Danger (Geffen Records), on October 12th. The album was met with praise from both critics and fans alike, with Rolling Stone giving it 4 Stars and hailing the album as “Ghetto rock and righteous hip-hop from dazzingly talented Def” and the New York Daily News proclaimed “No one is doing more to change our notion of how hip hop can sound.” The first single, “Sex, Love and Money’ earned Def a 2005 Grammy nomination for Best Alternative/Urban Performance and the album has been certified gold by the RIAA.

Wealth in America: Whites-Minorities Gap Is Now A Chasm

by iSpit

The housing crisis hit Hispanics and blacks much harder than it did whites!

As Congress and the White House wrestle whether to raise taxes for the wealthiest Americans, a new analysis of Census data shows that the wealth gaps between whites and blacks and Hispanics widened dramatically during the recession.

The analysis by the Pew Research Center, released on Tuesday, found that from 2005 to 2009, inflation-adjusted median wealth fell 66 percent among Hispanic households and 53 percent among black households, compared with a 16 percent decline among white households.
Those declines increased the wealth gap between white and minority households to the largest since the census began collecting such data in 1984. The ratio of wealth for whites to blacks, for instance, is now roughly 20 to 1, compared to 12 to 1 in the first survey 25 years ago and 7 to 1 in 1995, when a booming economy lifted many low-income Americansinto the middle class.

The wealth ratio for whites to Hispanics was 18 to 1 in 2009, also up from 7 to 1 in 1995, the Pew analysis found.
The declines from the recession left the median black household with $5,677 in wealth (assets minus debts, where assets include items like a car, a home, savings, retirement funds, etc.) and the typical Hispanic household with $6,325. White households, by comparison, had $113,149, the study found.
Sliced another way, the data from the Census Bureau’s Survey of Income and Program Participation (SIPP), showed that 35 percent of black households and 31 percent of Hispanic households had zero or negative net worth in 2009. The comparable rate for white households was 15 percent.
The SIPP income questionnaire is considered to provide the most comprehensive snapshot of household wealth by race and ethnicity.
The Pew analysis said the housing crisis was largely to blame for the widening gulf. The median level of home equity held by Hispanic homeowners declined by half from 2005 to 2009, from $99,983 to $49,145 it found. By comparison, white homeowners saw their median equity decline from $115,364 in 2005 to $95,000 in 2009. Black homeowners’ median equity fell from $76,910 to $59,000 over the same period.
The study said the sharper decline among Hispanics happened because a large share of Hispanics live in California, Florida, Nevada and Arizona, which were among the states hardest hit by the housing crisis.
Other studies have noted that blacks and Hispanics lost so much more home equity because they were far more likely to be sold a high-cost, sub-prime loan, regardless of their credit histories. Those mortgages now have the highest foreclosure rates.
It also noted that because whites are more heavily invested in the recovering stock market than blacks or Hispanics, the former had recovered a higher percentage of the wealth lost to the recession.
National Urban League President and CEO Marc Morial called the report a “wake-up call” that minority communities need more investment in long-term job creation.
“A paramount issue for this nation for the 21st century is to ensure the narrowing and closing of the racial wealth gap,” Morial told the Associated Press on Tuesday, a day before the National Urban League opens its annual convention in Boston. “It has deep social implications. It has deep political implications.”
In Washington, the wealth gap has been a major point of friction in talks about raising the debt ceiling and putting the nation on sounder fiscal footing. President Barack Obama and Democrats have sought a variety of ways to increase revenue, all aimed at those in the upper income bracket.
The president has proposed closing loopholes in the tax code, such as breaks for owners of private jets and for oil companies as well as higher income tax rates on wealthier individuals and families. Republicans have made resistance to any tax increases a focal point in the debate, arguing that raising taxes in a recession is an impediment to creating jobs. Neither plan currently under consideration contains any tax increases.

Study: Kids Exposed To Secondhand Smoke Miss More School

by iSpit

Children who live with smokers miss more school due to illness than those who live in households with non-smokers, according to a new study published in the journal Pediatrics.
Researchers analyzed data from the 2005 National Health Interview Survey that tracked, among other things, how many days of school children aged 6 to11 missed and the reason for their absence.
They found children living with one or more smokers in the home missed one to two more days of school per year on average, than those who lived with non-smokers.  The research suggests that families could reduce absenteeism by 24 to 34 % if smoking was eliminated from their households.

According to the study, about one third of children in the United States live with a smoker. Among children aged 3 to 11, at least 56% have detectable levels of a chemical called serum cotinine, an indication of tobacco smoke exposure. Cotinine is a breakdown of nicotine and can be measured by analyzing levels in the blood, urine or saliva. Researchers say this establishes a link between household smoking and two specific respiratory illnesses.

“Kids living with people smoking in the home were more likely to have ear infections and chest colds,” Dr. Douglas Levy, the study’s principal investigator and Assistant in Health Care Policy at the Mongan Institute for Health Policy said. “Among kids who were living with smokers, a quarter to one-third of the days they missed from school can be attributed to the fact that they live with someone who smokes in the home.”

The study found that having multiple smokers in the home resulted in more  illnesses reported and days of school missed. For example, a child living with 2 or more adult smokers had more ear infections- three or more-in a year, than a child living with no smokers or even just one smoker.

An increase in illness was not the only consequence smoking at homr. Levy says there is a financial burden as well because parents or other caregivers must take off work to care for sick children.

“When kids are home from school, particularly young kids, the cost overall is $227 million dollars per year. All due to the extra days that we see kids missing school because of secondhand smoke exposure,” said Levy.

Adults in non-smoking households were more educated, had higher incomes and were more likely to be Hispanic the study found. Homes with 2 or more smokers also had higher incomes but were more often white. About half the kids in the study that lived with a smoker were from low-income households Levy said. His advice to parents? “If you are a smoker do not smoke around your kids whether it be at home or in the car. Even better advice is to try to quit smoking.”

The study was not without limitations. Children over 12 were excluded from the study because of the possibility that exposure could be due to their own smoking. And study authors acknowldege their measure of tobacco smoke exposure was not precise and they were not able to measure exposure that might have happened outside of the home.

The Key to Black Male Academic Success: Mentorship

by iSpit

Posted on March 22, 2011 by theblackmancan

A significant body of empirical research has demonstrated that Black male students academically underperform all students throughout the educational pipeline (Hawkins, 2010; Jackson, 2003).

One has to wonder how this can be a reality when there are so many successful Black men in America. Unfortunately, many Black men are not taking Black male academic underachievement as serious as they need to take it. Imagine if White male students academically lagged behind all students throughout the educational pipeline-it would be declared a national emergency.

Why will we not declare Black male academic underachievement in the Black community to be a national emergency? Do Black people not really care about Black male academic underachievement? Of course, we do! The challenge for members in the Black community is to resolve the best way to lead a coordinated national effort to begin to tackle this critical problem. This article contends that mentorship is crucial to dramatically ameliorating Black male academic achievement.

Mentorship is the most immediate, practical, and effective tool that we have in the Black community to tremendously improve Black male academic achievement. Yes, there are many important factors that contribute to the national academic underachievement of Black males, but we, Black men, have the power to address this problem ourselves. We (more…)

Video Games x Kids: How Young Is Too Young?

by iSpit

I was visiting my nephews, again. Within seconds of seeing me fiddle with my iPhone, my older nephew, Jack, who is 8, asked me, again, if my iPhone had any videogames on it.

“Uh, no, sorry Jack,” was my reply, letting a white lie skip through my teeth. I knew his mother and father might be none too pleased to see the two of us hunched over the tiny screen playing “Star Wars Arcade: Falcon Gunner” or “Lego Indiana Jones 2.”

What his parents are doing is difficult. They’ve chosen to keep Jack videogame-free for as long as possible.

Of course, Jack has gotten a taste of videogames. He gets to play on special occasions, and will probably play at friends’ houses where the rules are different.

I suspect his parents will persist until they can’t hold out any longer, until peer pressure from schoolmates, combined with the reality that kids of Jack’s generation will be inexorably bound to video technology like none before them, forces them to relent.

Perhaps it’s a lost cause. Still, key questions can be raised here, and they are good ones to consider.

What is the appropriate age to let kids loose in the digital playscape? Are videogames OK for 8-year-olds? Seven-year-olds? Six? How young is too young?

Some games are appropriate for certain age groups and some games aren’t; obviously, no one is allowing their 5-year-old to play “Grand Theft Auto.” (Jeezum, let’s hope.)

I’m no expert, but I’ve been reading up on some of the research. For one, the trend is that each year, younger and (more…)

Philly Reaches Settlement In ‘Stop and Frisk’ Suit

by iSpit

A court-appointed monitor will oversee the use of “stop and frisk” searches by city police, a high-profile part of the mayor‘s efforts to combat violent crime, according to a settlement agreement announced Tuesday.

Authorities also will take additional steps to make sure the stops are only made when there is reasonable suspicion of criminal conduct.

The settlement stems from a federal lawsuit filed by the American Civil Liberties Union in November alleging that the searches were violating the rights of blacks and Latinos who had done nothing wrong. The ACLU sued on behalf of eight men — including a state lawmaker — it says were subjected to illegal searches since the city started using “stop and frisk,” a controversial element of Mayor Michael Nutter’s 2007 mayoral campaign.

As part of the agreement, the city denies wrongdoing and denies claims made by the plaintiffs.

The city agrees to provide the plaintiffs with documentation of stops made during certain periods between 2006 and (more…)

Limewire Settles Suit with Record Labels for $105 million

by iSpit

Thursday saw the end to a 5 year copyright infringement lawsuit being settled between major record labels and the popular file sharing service Limewire.

In 2006, Limewire was accused through a lawsuit filing to be a web service “devoted essentially” to piracy by allowing person to download music illegally.

After a 2005 Supreme Court ruling stating that a site much like Limewire called Grokster could be held liable for infringement, 44 year old Mark Gorton kept the Limewire service running which was founded in 2000.

What is of note is that record companies wanted to enforce the maximum penalty of $1.4 billion while also causing Gorton, a millionaire Wall Street trader, to face personal liability.

After being ordered to limit the websites services, Limewire said they would close their proverbial doors on Dec. 31.

Interestingly, Joseph Baio, a Limewire lawyer, made it very clear for persons to remember that it is not Limewire alone that has caused the music industries woes in recent years, but that the industry knew and knows it has had problems some time before Limewire was brought to birth.

Illegal CD copying, music seller bankruptcies, and other outside forces have also shifted the odds against the music industry in recent memory.

Point is, Limewire appears to be done, at least in its familiar form. Who’s to say it may not turn out to be the next Napster?

FBI Documents On Notorious B.I.G. Murder Reveal Rare German Ammunition Used

by iSpit

Records of an FBI probe into the unsolved case of Biggie’s murder appear in The Vault including information about the the way the New York emcee was killed in Los Angeles. It seems he was shot with a German-made Gecko 9mm gun, one that is not commonly found in the United States. The FBI investigation also provides information about some Los Angeles Police Department officers involved with the case having gang ties. It also reveals details about how they were able to hinder the process of the investigation by not properly documenting or following up on witness statements related to the killing of Christopher Wallace. The FBI also has uncut video footage of the shooting, according to AllHipHop.com reports.

While most of the information related to the murder has been known by the public, other news did surface through The Vault, along with a spiffy new document reader and a search option, the bureau has uploaded dozens of new files, & material that has previously been processed in response to (more…)

WTF!?: Oral Sex A ‘Gateway’ Activity For Teens

by iSpit

Most teens who engage in oral sex for the first time will have vaginal intercourse within six months, a new poll indicates. And half the teens who initiate oral sex in ninth grade will have vaginal intercourse before the end of junior year, the survey of California high school students finds.”Oral sex among adolescents happens,” said study lead author Anna V. Song, an assistant professor in the school of social sciences, humanities, and arts at the University of California-Merced. “But there’s two contradictory ways it can go from there: There’s the possibility that for adolescents oral sex is a gateway to vaginal sex or instead that it’s being used to stave off vaginal sex.”What the researchers actually found was less clear-cut.”Most of the kids report that they’re having oral sex and intercourse for the very first time within the same six months,” Song said.Freshman and sophomore years appear to be the critical time. “Among those who initiate oral sex between ninth and 10th grade, we found that oral sex is significantly related to vaginal sex,” she said. “But once you get through that particular period, that relationship is not there anymore. And that’s also true among kids who initiate oral sex before the ninth grade. They are also no more or less likely to engage in vaginal sex.”So, while kids may think of oral sex as “low risk” with respect to sexually transmitted diseases and pregnancy, its initiation may have a strong predictive tie to future high-risk activities. This finding should guide sex-education (more…)

I Dont Get It: Pope John Paul Nears Sainthood, To Be Beatified

by iSpit

I researched it… I read it… I still dont get it..Any help?

The late Pope John Paul II moved a big step closer to Roman Catholic sainthood on Friday when his successor approved a decree attributing a miracle to him and announced that he will be beatified on May 1.

The ceremony in St Peter’s Square marking the last step before sainthood is expected to draw hundreds of thousands of people, harkening back to the funeral of the charismatic pope in 2005, one of the biggest media events of the new century.

His coffin will be moved beforehand from its present location in the Vatican crypts and placed under an altar in a chapel in St Peter’s Basilica so more people can pay homage.

“This will be an extraordinary event … He really deserves it, he was a man who really did great things and was recognized by the whole world,” said Italian tourist Mario Corona, who was visiting a Polish community church near the Vatican.

John Paul’s 27-year papacy was one of the most historic and tumultuous of modern times. During his pontificate, communism collapsed across eastern

Judge: 2005 Approval Of Monsanto GMO Sugarbeets Was Illegal

by iSpit

A federal judge on Tuesday ordered the destruction of plantings of genetically modified sugar beets developed by Monsanto Co after ruling previously the U.S. Agriculture Department illegally approved the biotech crop.

U.S. District Court Judge Jeffrey White in August banned the planting and sales of Monsanto’s “Roundup Ready” biotech sugar beets after determining that their approval in 2005 by the USDA was illegal. He said the government must conduct a thorough environmental review before approving the crop to comply with the law.

But shortly after the ruling, the USDA issued permits allowing companies to plant seedlings to produce seed for future GMO sugar beet crops.

In his ruling Tuesday Judge White said those seedlings “shall be removed from the ground.”

Earthjustice, a consumer group that brought the case against the USDA and had asked the judge to order the young plants be destroyed, said the action was the first court-ordered destruction of a GMO crop.

Brad Pitt Commissions Designs For Rebuilding New Orleans Homes

by iSpit

Thom Mayne of Morphosis in Los Angeles designed a house that would float if the city floods. James Timberlake of KieranTimberlake Associates in Philadelphia created a house with native vines climbing up the side walls to provide shade and coolness. Steven B. Bingler of Concordia in New Orleans envisioned a house with wide front steps ideal for a traditional crawfish boil.

Those are three of the designs by 13 architecture firms commissioned by the actor Brad Pitt to help rebuild New Orleans’s impoverished Lower Ninth Ward, one of the neighborhoods hit hardest by Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

The project, called Make It Right, calls for building 150 affordable, environmentally sound houses over the next two years. In a telephone interview from New Orleans, where he plans to present the designs today, Mr. Pitt said the residents of the neighborhood had been homeless long enough. “They’re coming up on their third Christmas,” he said.

North Korea seeks $75 trillion in compensation

by iSpit

Cash-strapped North Korea has demanded the United States pay almost $US 65 trillion ($75 trillion) in compensation for six decades of hostility.

The official North Korean news agency, KCNA, says the cost of the damage done by the US since the peninsula was divided in 1945 is estimated at $US64.96 trillion.

The compensation call comes on the eve of the 60th anniversary of the start of the 1950-1953 Korean War.

KCNA said the figure includes $US26.1 trillion arising from US “atrocities” which left more than 5 million North Koreans dead, wounded, kidnapped or missing.

The agency also claims 60 years of US sanctions have caused a loss of $US 13.7 trillion by 2005, while property losses were estimated at $US16.7 trillion.

The agency said North Koreans have “the justifiable right” to receive the compensation for their blood.

It said the committee’s calculation did not include the damage North Korea had suffered from sanctions after its first nuclear test in 2006.
