CIA Monitors Facebook, Twitter: Five Million Tweets A Day

by iSpit

The Associated Press this morning reports an exclusive, explaining how the White House can receive real-time updates on a situation on the ground, leading up to a revolution, predicting crime and disorder, or the ‘mood in the air’ shortly after the death of Osama bin Laden.

The U.S. Central Intelligence Agency on a daily basis, out of an “anonymous industrial park in Virginia”, follows over 5 million tweets by users on the ground.

The ‘Open Source Center’, manned by a team the agency affectionately dubs the “vengeful librarians”, also trawls other social networking sites like Facebook, along with Internet chat rooms; all the way down to newspapers and anything that anyone can contribute to openly.

Along with the vast resources of the agency, the real-time information from an angry blog post to a tweet sent from a BlackBerry, location-based data is gathered and tied to a made phone call to collect as much information as possible. This gives those in the highest offices of the U.S. government a specific picture of a certain place, at a certain time, to predict when an event that may cause national instability, diplomatic harm or suchlike could occur.

The report goes on to suggest that the White House, courtesy of the intelligence gathered from the vast array of resources at their disposal, from the publicly-available content provided by citizens and journalists alike, “saw the uprising in Egypt coming”, but they did not know exactly when it would strike.

The facility was set up as a recommended action based on the report by the 9/11 Commission, with many working from the ‘industrial unit’ to U.S. embassies around the world, in a bid to get closer to the action on the ground.

Intelligence services rely on those speaking the specific dialects of difficult-to-understand languages, often those who grew up in the area and emigrated, or those with family still in the region, along with those with a vast array of degrees in specific subjects to formulate guidance based on the intelligence presented to them.

While many have suspected for some time, with the rare utterance of admittance, that the most clandestine intelligence services around the world monitor Facebook and Twitter, blogs and other content on the web, the report explains how “Facebook and Twitter… have become a key resource for following a fast moving crisis”.

By following messages, Facebook status updates and tweets from Bangkok during the recent uprising, journalists were hampered by the rioting and the army moving in, with traditional media slowing to a trickle. Citizen journalism, therefore, was the prime target for the agency, allowing dozens of ‘reporters’ to be honed in on to provide valuable, real-time information on the ground.

Invisible Children (Full Video)

by iSpit

Three young Americans traveled to Africa in search of such as story. What they found was a tragedy that disgusted and inspired them. A story where children are weapons and children are the victims. The “Invisible Children: rough cut” film exposes the effects of a 20 year-long war on the children of Northern Uganda. These children live in fear of abduction by rebel soldiers, and are being forced to fight as a part of violent army. This wonderfully reckless documentary is fast paced, with an MTV beat, and is something truly unique. To see Africa through young eyes is humorous and heart breaking, quick and informative – all in the very same breath. See this film, you will be forever changed.

How Much Does a Hit Song Cost, Anyway? Try $1,078,000

by iSpit

Via:

That’s according to NPR, which polled a number of industry experts to determine the real cost behind a top-charting hit. In this case, it was Rihanna’s recently-created “Man Down,” a big-budget, blockbuster-style blowout that remains unproven.

Seem ridiculous?  Indeed, the cost includes a small army of writers (an ‘all-star writing camp’), costs related to ‘flying the artist around’ and of course, ‘courting radio programmers with fancy dinners’.  All part of a big-label, big-budget style that seems reserved for the tiniest cadre of artists.  ”It was at least forty guys out there,” said writer Ray Daniels, referring to the camp, which also involved several high-end studio rentals.  ”I was shocked at how much money they were spending!”

Actually, one of the biggest chunks goes to radio – or more specifically, buying a slot in the rotations of various conglomerates (whatever the kickback mechanism or influence vehicle).  That validates information from earlier sources to Digital Music News, who note that getting mainstream radio rotation is virtually impossible these days without major label backing.

Army Specialist Jailed Over Rap Lyrics

by iSpit

An Army Specialist has been thrown in jail, after being accused of making threats against other soldiers in a rap song.

Iraq war veteran specialist Mark Hall was based at Fort Stewart, Georgia.

He’s been in custody since December, charged with “conduct prejudicial to the good order and discipline of the Armed Forces” and for “threatening violence on multiple occasions.”

Hall’s lyrics on a rap song posted to the Internet threatened to kill Colonels, Captain’s, Kernels, E-7’s and above, using his M4 assault rifle.

Officials have charged Hall for “threatening to go on a rampage and attack other soldiers” if he was deployed to Iraq again.

The HAARP Machine & How It Affects You

by iSpit

It’s called the High Frequency Active Auroral Research Project. What could be more innocuous than researching the Northern Lights, right?

Depends on who you ask.

HAARP is a research program based in Alaska to “study the ionosphere” and aurora effects in the atmosphere. It’s run jointly by the Air Force and the Navy. If you’re wondering why the Air Force and the Navy care about aurorae, you’re not the only one.

There is, of course, a perfectly reasonable explanation. According to HAARP (which unlike many insidious government conspiracies, has its own Web site), “Because the DoD (Department of Defense) operates numerous communication and navigation systems whose signals either depend on reflection from the ionosphere or must pass through the ionosphere to satellites, there is obvious DoD interest in understanding the ionosphere’s effect on these systems to improve their reliability and performance.”
