Sexual Chemistry – programme summary

The drug Viagra revolutionised the treatment of sexual dysfunction in men on its launch five years ago. An accidental discovery, the tablet that gave impotent men the chance once more to have natural erections became the fastest selling pill in history and has earned its manufacturer, Pfizer, over $6bn.

The search is now on for a similar drug that could help women. Research is revealing that female sexuality is more complex than expected. For women suffering from a loss of desire many scientists believe that drugs acting on the brain may be the way forward. A pioneering Scottish study may have identified just such a drug and begun testing it scientifically.

A man thing

An erection is achieved by filling the erectile tissue of the penis with blood. Blood vessels widen to allow blood in and then constrict to maintain the pressure. Male impotence was long thought to be a psychiatric effect, a result of stress, anxiety or depression. Medical advice was that there was not much to be done. Some patients refused to take this message on board.

Geddings Osbon used his profession (working in a tyre workshop in Georgia, USA) as inspiration for one solution. Suffering from impotence himself, he designed a vacuum pump to create an erection by engorging his penis with blood and containing it with a rubber band. Despite its problems of discomfort, his vacuum device achieved popularity and is still recommended by medics to some men with erectile dysfunction.

The next leap forward came in 1983 when British urologist, Giles Brindley, gave an eye-opening presentation to colleagues in the field, gathered at Las Vegas. He told them he had just injected himself with phenoxybenzamine and then showed them the results, by dropping his trousers and displaying his erect organ.

Brindley had proved that a drug could be used to treat erection problems. Modern science accepts that impotence can be the result of a number of medical conditions: high blood pressure, furred arteries and some types of diabetes. Injecting phenoxybenzamine is relatively easy but an instant erection hardly fits into most people’s natural sexual practice. A pill would still be ideal.

Blues for the boys

In 1985, the drug company Pfizer was working on treatments for the heart complaint, angina. Dr Ian Osterloh and Dr Gill Samuels were using sildenafil citrate to relax blood vessels, in the hope of easing the pain of narrowed cardiac arteries. They were about to become unwitting sexual pioneers. Their drug did significantly increase blood flow, but not in the heart. It did so in the penis.

With its side effect recognised, studies began to assess the compound’s ability to treat impotence. Researchers in Bristol assembled a library of explicit films in order to provide a controlled method of arousing the subjects. They thought the blue tablets wouldn’t cause an erection on their own, but could help lust to run its natural course.

The investigation pieced together how the compound – Viagra – was beating male impotence. When sexually excited, cells in the penis produce a chemical messenger known as cyclic GMP. Its effect is to allow more blood to enter the erectile tissue, making it more rigid. The level of cyclic GMP is continuously kept in check by an enzyme. Viagra acts to inhibit the enzyme, preserving cyclic GMP and enabling the man to achieve an erection at a time that fits into having sex.

Viagra for women

With an understanding of the chemical mechanism that allows Viagra to intervene in the physical process of male erections, it was natural for scientists to wonder what effect the drug would have for women. Female sexual problems were a field that had received far less attention than males’. Like in men, it was supposed to be primarily a psychological complaint.

Research showed that arousal chemicals in men and women are the same and also that the physiological similarities between the penis and clitoris are greater than many realised. However, a number of studies have revealed that for the vast majority of women with sexual problems, Viagra is little help. (Women with pelvic blood flow problems and some spinal injuries can benefit.)

More intelligent sex

The reason it seems is that for women, being turned on sexually is more to do with the brain than the pelvis. Dr Ellen Laan turned to erotic videos to try to understand the female sexual response. She showed women two films. One concentrated on the man‘s pleasure; one on the woman’s. Her subjects experienced increased vaginal blood flow with both films, but only reported being turned on by the film that was more focussed on female pleasure. Laan deduced that – unlike men – for women the genitals are not the best indicator of arousal.

The most common complaint of women who seek help for sexual problems is not a physical one but a loss of desire. Using the contraceptive pill or anti-depressants can prompt it, as can childbirth, the menopause or falling out of love. Sometimes it seems there is no reason. Finding a cure is much harder than helping men to bolster their equipment.

Sex on the brain

A Scottish nurse could yet become the pioneer for a drug treatment for women. Ian Russell specialises in helping people with sexual problems. In 2001, he started giving a new drug product – apomorphine hydrochloride – to men with impotence.

Apomorphine (licensed for men as Uprima and Ixense) is a drug designed to work in the brain itself. It mimics the brain signalling chemical, dopamine, and has been shown to act in the hypothalamus, an area known to control physical arousal. In men, apomorphine amplifies the signal to have an erection. But Ian Russell‘s trial participants reported that taking the drug regularly did more than overcome impotence; it raised their levels of desire.

This unexpected discovery made Russell realise the drug could be useful for his female patients as well. He approached Prof Jeremy Heaton from Ontario, Canada, who had developed apomorphine. Jeremy gave him the encouragement he needed to set up a small pilot study. He gave women varying doses of apomorphine for 18 weeks. Questionnaires at six week intervals assessed any change in their sexual function.

Eight out of the ten women reported an increase in sexual desire and in their overall sexual satisfaction. Russell was encouraged but well aware that one small uncontrolled study could yield unrepresentative results. He is now embarking on a larger, double blind study.

Meanwhile, research on rats has shown that dopamine’s role in the brain extends beyond the hypothalamus. It’s known to play a role in the limbic system, the part of the brain thought to control emotion. This could explain the connection with desire.

Drugs that aim to tackle female sexual problems are still years away from being licensed. However, as the differences – and similarities – between the sexes become clearer, the essence of male and female sexuality is opening up to scientific investigation.

Study: Kids Exposed To Secondhand Smoke Miss More School

Children who live with smokers miss more school due to illness than those who live in households with non-smokers, according to a new study published in the journal Pediatrics.
Researchers analyzed data from the 2005 National Health Interview Survey that tracked, among other things, how many days of school children aged 6 to11 missed and the reason for their absence.
They found children living with one or more smokers in the home missed one to two more days of school per year on average, than those who lived with non-smokers.  The research suggests that families could reduce absenteeism by 24 to 34 % if smoking was eliminated from their households.

 

According to the study, about one third of children in the United States live with a smoker. Among children aged 3 to 11, at least 56% have detectable levels of a chemical called serum cotinine, an indication of tobacco smoke exposure. Cotinine is a breakdown of nicotine and can be measured by analyzing levels in the blood, urine or saliva. Researchers say this establishes a link between household smoking and two specific respiratory illnesses.

 

“Kids living with people smoking in the home were more likely to have ear infections and chest colds,” Dr. Douglas Levy, the study’s principal investigator and Assistant in Health Care Policy at the Mongan Institute for Health Policy said. “Among kids who were living with smokers, a quarter to one-third of the days they missed from school can be attributed to the fact that they live with someone who smokes in the home.”

 

The study found that having multiple smokers in the home resulted in more  illnesses reported and days of school missed. For example, a child living with 2 or more adult smokers had more ear infections- three or more-in a year, than a child living with no smokers or even just one smoker.

 

An increase in illness was not the only consequence smoking at homr. Levy says there is a financial burden as well because parents or other caregivers must take off work to care for sick children.

 

“When kids are home from school, particularly young kids, the cost overall is $227 million dollars per year. All due to the extra days that we see kids missing school because of secondhand smoke exposure,” said Levy.

 

Adults in non-smoking households were more educated, had higher incomes and were more likely to be Hispanic the study found. Homes with 2 or more smokers also had higher incomes but were more often white. About half the kids in the study that lived with a smoker were from low-income households Levy said. His advice to parents? “If you are a smoker do not smoke around your kids whether it be at home or in the car. Even better advice is to try to quit smoking.”

The study was not without limitations. Children over 12 were excluded from the study because of the possibility that exposure could be due to their own smoking. And study authors acknowldege their measure of tobacco smoke exposure was not precise and they were not able to measure exposure that might have happened outside of the home.

Remember reports earlier this year that the new perfume Lady Gaga has in development with Coty will smell like blood? It turns out the perfume, which is expected early next year, is based on molecules of her own blood, “so it’s a sense of having me on your skin,” she says now. “Actually the perfume smells like an expensive hooker.” [Daily Mail]

I was thinking to myself; wow, this is his mother, Emma Bigglesworth? She’s a beautiful Black woman, curvy, mocha toned brown skin, looks soft, smooth, dark brown eyes, accompanied by long eye lashes, long sandy brown hair, high cheek bones, full lips, and she’s like an angel. She looks as if she’s about forty-five, very young to have a son so old.  How am I going to get through this interview without staring at her breast…Dammit!

 

Emma says, “Mr. Briar? ‘Ello?”

Eli says, “Apologies, Ms. Bigglesworth.”

Emma says, “Call me Emma, please. What would you like ta know ‘bout Trevor?”

Eli says, “The beginning.”

 

I reach into my bag and take out my tape recorder and place it on the table between us. I can’t believe this is his mother, how can something so lovely birth something like Trevor Eames Bigglesworth? I hit the record button on the tape recorder and then says, “Emma Bigglesworth interview, take one. Go.”

 

The last moment with him was Cory telling ‘im, “I’m going ta the store for cigarettes, go play, child.” He walks away from ‘im and then yells up the block at ‘im, “Just remember, wraith will make you dig two graves!” That was the last time Trevor saw his father. I totally understand why he left; I didn’t condone it but the wanker wasn’t built for a family. His mind was still stuck in ‘Nam. Don’t get me wrong, he was a beautiful man. He was funny, smart, charming, silly, caring, loving, and he loved Trevor like no other. I loved Cory for that but Cory wasn’t a people person. Imaging being at war for over a decade it can really mess wit’ your mind. Hm, look at me reminiscing ‘bout my ex-husband. Trevor changed the day after, after he realized his father wasn’t coming back. We lived in a two bedroom apartment in Bristol, the year was nineteen ninety-two. I woke up ta my little man crying at the bottom of my bed. I jumped up and gave ‘im a bug hug, I knew exactly what was wrong. He looked up at me with his big, puffy red eyes as tear falls down his face like waterfalls, he says, “He not comin’ back, mum, is he?” My eyes begun ta water but I was strong ‘nough not ta cry in front of ‘im. I said ta ‘im as my voice begun ta crack, “Na, daddy isn’t cumming back, Emey but I am here for you and I will try my best ta make you happy, baby.” He looked up at me wit’ a look of disappointment and lightly uttered, “Okay mum.” He buried his face inta my chest and cried for an hour. It pained me ta hear my baby cry in pain. He loved his father like he was God. I hated Cory for year for hurting our son like that. Cory thought leaving millions of dollar behind that would make up for his absence.

 

“Wait!” says, Eli…“Millions?” says, Eli.

Emma says, “Yes, millions. He was a simple man, he just wanted the basics in his life; food, shelter, you know, things like that.”

Eli says, “But, Emma, where did he get the money from?

 

Emma says, “All I know is he go on secret missions for the States for like a month or two and comes back with a few million. He never talked ‘bout his trips, he just came ‘ome. He just slept for days after he’s well rested he’ll play with Trevor for days.”

 

Eli says, “What were they “trips” about?”

Emma says, “Actually, Eli, I am not comfortable talking ‘bout his trips. Let’s stay on Trevor.”

Eli says, “Fair enough, continue.”

Trevor wasn’t always strong and good looking; kids bullied him daily. I was always up at his school in conferences. Kids didn’t like ‘im ‘cause his father was American. Anytime people talked ‘bout his father he would snap but Trevor was this skinny, big ‘ead kid. He tried his busy ta fight back but his father didn’t teach ‘im ta fight before left. Cory didn’t want his son growing up like ‘im, a fighter. Trevor use ta cum ‘ome wit’ black eyes, busted lips, broken nose, you name it they broke it. I never understand why he was lashing out so badly ‘cause he was a gifted student. At the age of ten he was already in the seventh grade. Can you believe that?! My baby is a genius! Trevor finally calmed down at the age of fourteen; he was a senior in high school. Years of hoping Cory comes back I grew horny. Excuse my language therefore I met an attractive mate named Wilson. Wilson was a tall, ‘andsome, White man, beautiful smile, kind eyes, and he was a police officer. I figured he would be a good role model for Trevor. We dated for a year and half before he moved in wit’ us. Trevor really didn’t care for ‘im. He felt as if I was betraying his father, I wasn’t. I still love Cory dearly but I was lonely, I still am very lonely. I just wanted to feel the touch of a strong man again. Trevor was on summer break from Oxford University. Did I say my baby is a genius? Wilson become really over pretective of me. I was going out wit’ my friend and stopped me frum going out. He claimed I was “fucking the nigger down stairs.” I slapped him a crossed his face. He then bea me ta a bloody pulp. When Trevor came ‘ome with Asia and Thomas he found me under the kitchen table crying for his father. No matter ‘ow many argument Cory and I got in he always kissed me on the cheek and told me he love me. Cory would ‘ave killed Wilson for ‘urting me. An enrage Trevor rushed down ta Wilson’s police pub while Asia, Trevor’s girlfriend stay wit’ me and cleaned me up. Thomas told me Trevor rushed inta the pub and bashed a bottle over Wilson head. Wilson beat Trevor and Thomas pretty bad. He broken two of Trevor’s ribs, he gave my little solider a good hiding. I called the police, since they were his chums they refused ta help me. Wilson returned ‘ome enraged. Asia tried ta protect me but he broke her nose. He called Trevor all types of names as he beat me with his belt as if I was a child. With each stinging whip of his belt all I could think ‘bout was Cory. I needed ‘im ‘ere ta save me, love me, and nurse me back to ‘ealth. He ‘it me so hard his beat snapped in ‘alf. Asia ‘it ‘im wit’ a chair, he kicked her in the stomach. What a spotty Herbert ta kick a sixteen year old girl in the stomach. He kicked her once more while she was down, Asia release a loud scream of agony. I am in the kitchen trying ta stand but I was so scared and ‘urting that my leg kept giving out frum under me. He stands over me with an evil, enraged look on his face, his eyes were fire, and his fist was so tight that his palm was bleeding. He punched me so ‘ard in the fore’ead that he broken his knuckles. At this point, I’ve blacked out ta wake up a few moments late wit’ ‘im standing over me stomping me. Asia is screaming in the living room in pain. I was helpless; I didn’t understand why this man I love is trying ta kill me. As he rises his right foot ta stomp my face I hear Trevor’s voice in the background, he says, “Oi! Wilson!” Wilson turns ‘round wit’ rage in his eye preparing ta charge Trevor. I peeked over at Trevor standing at the down wit’ Thomas stand behind ‘im. Wilson begins ta charge Trevor, Trevor smirks with a blood cumming out of his nose and mouth. He says, “Catch.” He pulls out a gun and shoots Wilson in the fore’ead.

Blood splatters on the walls and Trevor’s face. Wilson falls dead ta Trevor’s feed, twitching. Trevor shoots ‘im three more times in the back of the skull. At this point, I am in total awe wit’ Trevor but happy Wilson is dead. At that point I looked inta Trevor’s eyes and notice something different. All his fear, insecurities, pains, and rage are all gone. He is used it to make ‘im stronger and fearless; just like his father. Let carried me and Asia ta my bed and he kissed my fore’ead and uttered, “I luv you, mum. Ah’ll be back, Ah’ll take care o’ the body. Don’t fret, Ah’ll ‘andle it.” He walked out of the room and closed the door behind ‘im. I turned over ta Asia and held her tightly as she cried herself ta sleep. I quietly sobbed in rejoice that that bastard is in ‘ell were he belongs. Sum how Trevor covered it all up and I never asked him ‘bout Wilson never again.

 

Emma pauses as she stares off into space. I slow reaches for the tape recorder and pushes stop. I can’t believe the story I just heard. I looked up at Emma with a hint of nervousness and uttered, “Thank you, Emma. That was…That was good. Thank you for your courage.” Emma looked up at me with a blank look on her face giving me a light smirk. I wasn’t sure if that smirk was real or fake, I am not going to question it. She says to me, “Would you like ta stay for sum tea, Eli?” I give her a huge smile and said, “I would love to, Emma.” She gets up from the dinning room table and walks towards the kitchen. She turns around and asks, “Milk or honey?” I say, “Honey, please.”

This was how I met the angel who made a devil…

“The Boy Who Followed Somebody Else’s Dream”

The 4th of July is a good time to reflect on these words from a great American:

It is not the critic who counts, not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles or where the doer of deeds could have done better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood, who strives valiantly, who errs and comes up short again and again, because there is no effort without error or shortcoming, but who knows the great enthusiasms, the great devotions, who spends himself for a worthy cause; who, at the best, knows, in the end, the triumph of high achievement, and who, at the worst, if he fails, at least he fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who knew neither victory nor defeat.

That’s Teddy Roosevelt speaking at the Sorbonne a century ago in 1910.

Some truths are timeless: The critics, your critics, will always be there, lurking and worthless.

Which reminds me… I had a very bright young woman in my office this week. She was bright and educated and clever and fantastic, but I have to admit, I wasn’t buying her very well-expressed desire to join our team, so I said:

“Hey, look, I do career advice for a living. When you put the kids to sleep, and you have a moment in your day, and it’s just you, what do you dream about doing?”

And she was passionate, she was engaging, she was alive!… alive in the way that only the fire can bring, and she inspired! — and I’m a guy that lives for inspiration!

But her passion wasn’t for my business — online recruitment — it was for something else. Maybe that something else could be considered a hobby, maybe it could be considered a small business, maybe it could be considered to be not so quite very prestigious as the other fancy names and pedigrees that popped like fireworks from her resume.

But it was passion and it was hers!

I loved it!

So I asked “Why don’t you go and do that? That’s what makes you passionate, that’s what makes you alive, that’s what makes you happy. Why don’t you go and do that and be amazing at it?”

And her answer comes rolling back, quieter now, eyes turned down, “Well, my parents / friends / colleagues / classmates don’t think it’s very impressive and that I should be doing something else with my time — something more valuable.”

And I asked her: “When have great things ever been accomplished by doing what other people wanted you to do?”

And you know, Readers, it’s true.

There’s no storybook about “The Boy Who Followed Somebody Else’s Dream”, no movie rights sold for the tale of “It Wasn’t Within My Purview To Consider Alternatives”, no Sinatra tune entitled “I Did It The Way My Critics Requested I Do It”.

All the songs, all the movies, all the books say the same damn thing about you and your dream for a reason — because it’s true!

You’ll be on a stone slab someday too soon — far too soon — and your children will look at you and you’ll look at yourself, and you’re going to ask, and they’re going to ask, and wherever you are right now just do me a favor and…

…and listen to the wind breathe.

And count the years between here and birth — your birth, on the occasion of the country’s birth — and count the years between here and death.

And count the words of your loved ones, and your family, and your friends, and your kids, and your own words in your own head about who you are and who you want to be and who you always wanted to be. And realize that that is beautiful. And that is what you were made for.

And count the words of the critics and naysayers and the negative people in your life and the words they’ve piled up like stones for you with their wants and their desires and their demands of you.

Count the piles and feel their weight and add them up and ask yourself…

Which one do you want to carry with you to the end? Which one do you want to carry for the rest of your days?

Which one is worthy of you?

This Fourth of July, declare your independence from your critics.

It’s you who counts.

5 Ways to Keep Your Metabolism Up

…He was a dark, grim man wit’ jet black hair wit’ a patch o’ gray in the front o’ it; he always wore a buzz cut. He had dark, beautiful, rich skin with these piercin’ hazel eyes. Lookin’ into his eyes, you can see there was so much pain in his soul. He had a scar down his face through his right eye. The man was a big Yank brute in Britain; the bloke smoked two packs o’ fags a day and ate beef raw like a barbarian. He was a warrior at heart and in his appearance. He looks up at me as he sits on the front steps and says, “Ay! Cum mere.” He places his rough, massive hand on my right shoulder. His hands were like gorilla hands; as if he strangles people for a livin’. He looks down at me and says, “I got a story fo’ ya ‘bout revenge, child…”

“It was ’75 in ‘Nam; the fall of Saigon. My platoon was hand picked by that fuckin’ peace lover Ford to go into Saigon to find any remainin’ Americans and good Charlies. It was a mass evac out of Saigon; there were a few idiots that didn’t get the memo. My platoon marched through the ruined city of Saigon, killin’ any gooks in sight with our fears in the wind and our balls on our sleeves. My buddy, David Richardson was this goofy, little cracker boy that loved killin’ gooks just as much as I did. Who?!?!: The Legend Of The First Ones: Queen Akasha & King Enkil

Akasha (or AkashAakaasháĀkāśa, आकाश) is the Sanskrit word meaning aether in both its elemental and metaphysical senses. The name may represent the basis and essence of all things in the material world, the smallest material element created from the astral world, the conception of the cosmos or the Fifth Element. A good name for the first vampire-devil on Anne Rice’s Vampire Chronicles.

As known as Those Who Must Be Kept, Akasha and Enkil are the progenitors of all vampires who are also regarded as the King and Queen of the Vampires. Originally King Enkil and Queen Akasha of Kemet (now Egypt circa 5,000 BC), became the first vampires when an evil spirit named Amel was able to enter the body of Akasha through a wound and fuse with her flesh. Akasha then turned Enkil into a vampire by drawing out nearly all of his blood and then allowing him to drink nearly all of hers. The term “Those Who Must Be Kept” was coined by the vampire Marius referring to the fact that what befalls Akasha and Enkil also befalls all vampires, if they are injured, so are their children, if they die, so do all vampires.

Actually their blood contains the real “thing”that must be kept, so the power of the first can be passed to others. They are so old that they remain seat and looking like real statues.

In the book The Vampire Lestat it is specifically spelled out that Enkil and Akasha were made into vampires at the same time by a demonic infusion but it is later explained in Queen of the Damned that Akasha made Enkil into a (more…)

Melanin Covered Nanoparticles Prevent Radiation Damage

Melanin saves the day again

Tiny, melanin-covered nanoparticles may protect bone marrow from the harmful effects of radiation therapy, according to scientists at Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University who successfully tested the strategy in mouse models. Infusing these particles into human patients may hold promise in the future. The research is described in the current issue of the International Journal of Radiation Oncology, Biology and Physics. Radiation therapy is used to kill cancer cells and shrink tumors. But because radiation also damages normal cells, doctors must limit the dose. Melanin, the naturally occurring pigment that gives skin and hair its color, helps shield the skin from the damaging effects of sunlight and has been shown to protect against radiation.

“A technique for shielding normal cells from radiation damage would allow doctors to administer higher doses of radiation to tumors, making the treatment more effective,” said Ekaterina Dadachova, Ph.D., associate professor of nuclear medicine and of microbiology & immunology and the Sylvia and Robert S. Olnick Faculty Scholar in Cancer Research at Einstein, as well as senior author of the study.

In previously published research, Dr. Dadachova and colleagues showed that melanin protects against radiation by helping prevent the formation of free radicals, which cause DNA damage, and by scavenging the free radicals that do form.

“We wanted to devise a way to provide protective melanin to the bone marrow,” said Dr. Dadachova. “That’s where blood is formed, and the bone-marrow stem cells that produce blood cells are extremely susceptible to the damaging effects of radiation.”

Texas Sells Infant Blood, Second Lawsuit Filed

Beginning in 2002, Texas began saving blood samples collected from infants tested for birth defects.

The Texas Civil Rights Project filed suit in 2009 over a claim blood samples were improperly collected and stored without parental consent and samples were used for scientific research. A settlement was reached later that year which led to the promised destruction of over 5 million blood samples.

An new suit has been filed which seeks to recover and destroy samples that were allegedly sold to pharmaceutical companies and/or used by Armed Forces for genetic research. Compensation of $1,000 per blood sample sold is also sought from Health Commissioner David Lakey. The lawsuit is filed on behalf of two parents who believe their child may have been a victim of the state sponsored blood theft.

Jim Harrington, Civil Rights Project director, estimates almost 9000 samples were improperly sold but cautions that may be a conservative number. Harrington also believes the revenue collected from the sales total more than $300, 000.

Nanotech Robots Deliver Gene Therapy Through Blood

(Reuters) – U.S. researchers have developed tiny nanoparticle robots that can travel through a patient’s blood and into tumors where they deliver a therapy that turns off an important cancer gene.

 

The finding, reported in the journal Nature on Sunday, offers early proof that a new treatment approach called RNA interference or RNAi might work in people.

 

RNA stands for ribonucleic acid — a chemical messenger that is emerging as a key player in the disease process.

 

Dozens of biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies including Alnylam, Merck, Pfizer, Novartis and Roche are looking for ways to manipulate RNA to block genes that make disease-causing proteins involved in cancer, blindness or AIDS.

 

But getting the treatment to the right target in the body has presented a challenge.

Nano Technology Tackles Heart Disease

A molecule designed to find, latch onto, then treat hardened arteries could offer a new way to tackle heart disease, say its inventors.

Nanoburrs, developed at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), target only damaged cells in blood vessel walls.

Once attached, they can release drugs in precisely the right place.

But the British Heart Foundation warned the technology was some years from being used in patients.

The hardening of the arteries which supply the heart, or atherosclerosis, can eventually lead to blockages which can cause heart attacks.

Another Clark Episode Not Worth The Risk

Two years ago, playing in the high altitude of Denver could have killed Pittsburgh Steelers safety Ryan Clark(notes). Instead, it cost him surgeries that took his spleen and gall bladder, and the loss of an additional 35 pounds due to medical complications.

On Monday night, Pittsburgh returns to the Denver altitude for the first time since that scare. And amazingly, Clark is considering playing in the game, despite still carrying a sickle-cell trait and another undisclosed medical condition that caused the initial crisis. Clark has gotten medical clearance to play in the game, but the question remains: should Pittsburgh even be letting him entertain the risk?

It’s a complicated question, and one that really can’t be answered by anyone outside of the Steelers, who are the only ones fully aware of his medical history, as well as the potential danger caused by Clark playing in altitude. While some veterans expressed sentiment against it, one NFC general manager said it’s not a risk his franchise would take.
