Firm Turns Shipping Pallets Into Transitional Homes For Refugees

by iSpit

Every year over 21 million shipping pallets end up in a landfill. Used worldwide to ship goods of all kinds in mass quantities, a Brooklyn-based design firm looked past the intended use of a pallet and saw a versatile, recyclable, sustainable and inexpensive building material that could be used to address another issue: improving housing quality for refugees.

The inspiration behind I-Beam design firm’s Pallet House Project came from a mind-boggling statistic that 84 percent of the world’s refugees could be housed with a year’s worth of repurposed American pallets.

A pallet is the perfect material to provide a better standard of living — they are readily available in most countries and they can be used first to carry aid to displaced people in the form of clothing, food and medical supplies (to name but a few) and then recycled into shelters.

The average refugee stays in a refugee camp for seven years, and the Pallet House (a 250 square-foot structure composed of 100 reused pallets),  is a sturdier alternative to the tent shelters most common in refugee camps. Additionally, it can be easily converted from a temporary or emergency shelter to a permanent residence with the addition of more sturdy construction materials found in the area.

The houses are easy to assemble: once the pallets arrive, it only takes four to five people to nail together the house, and it can be built in less than a week. At first, when more standard construction materials are less available, the structures can be put together with the help of temporary supplies like tarps to keep the inside dry until materials from the surrounding area can make a more solid roof.

As time passes, pallets can be fitted with add-ons like insulation or plywood for the interiors(this can all be done prior to shipping as well), and stucco and plaster or roofing tiles for the exterior, if/when the materials become available. Due to the flexibility of the design, each occupant can build a shelter that fits their specific needs.

Though the Pallet House was originally conceived as a temporary transitional shelter for refugees making their way back to Kosovo, and has since been used to house people uprooted by natural disasters, famines and wars,  I-Beam has widened the scope of the Pallet House to include a much bigger population by using the module as a pre-fab solution to affordable housing everywhere.

An estimated one billion people live in substandard housing, and I-Beam believes that the Pallet House could help to provide better conditions for people in need around the world.

The Pallet House has already turned many heads for its innovative take on temporary housing, and it took home the Architecture for Humanity Award in 1999. I-Beam has built Pallet structures in New York, Indiana, and the Architecture Triennial in Milan and have been active recently in Haiti and Pakistan.

Jay-Z Would Pay More Taxes, If It Went to the Right Things

by iSpit

When it comes to percentages, Jay-Z probably resides somewhere in the top 0.0001% of income earners. But one of the richest rappers (and people) in the world now says he’d gladly pay more taxes – that is, if it went to the right things.

“Personally I wouldn’t mind paying more taxes if it went to the things that really mattered, if it went to education, people in poverty, if it went to the right things I wouldn’t mind,” Jay-Z told CNN.

Others in the upper crust, most notably Warren Buffett, have also called for higher taxes on the rich.  And in the music sphere, well-paid musicians like John Legend have also supported hikes on the elite.  But Jay-Z is famous for living both sides: he started life as Sean Carter in the Marcy Projects in Brooklyn, with an absentee dad and few opportunities.  Decades later, he’s now surfing at the highest levels of wealth.

Which probably introduces a complex perspective. “I’m pretty much in the middle of both sides, because you can understand paying so much for taxes, and then things not improving, you’re like ‘where’s everything going to?’” Carter continued.  ”It should be open accounting of where everything’s going to.  I think most people with a conscience, with integrity and moral fiber wouldn’t have a problem paying more taxes.”

But is Jay-Z guilty of some high-income doublespeak?  On one hand, Jay-Z is willing to pay more, but not without major governmental changes.  Yet the remaining 99 percent are also paying into the same, opaque system, which sort of brings the discussion back to square one.

The comments follow an earlier misstep with Occupy sympathizers.  After the movement started to gain steam, Jay-Z’s Rocafella fashion line introduced a t-shirt emblazoned with the modified slogan, “Occupy All Streets.”  But none of the profits associated with that merchandise were given back to the movement itself, and the shirts were pulled.

Converse Opens FREE Recording Studio in Brooklyn ‘Rubber Tracks’

by iSpit

Today Converse Inc. officially announced the opening of its Brooklyn recording studio, Converse Rubber Tracks, which allows artists to sign up and record songs for free.

Converse announced the studio last fall, and bands were able to apply for studio time on the Converse website until May 31.

New York and New Jersey artists Aabaraki, Majuscules, G.I.C. & Funk Face, Andre Henry and Super Rocket Car were selected as the first musicians to begin recording this summer. Starting today, funk/R&B group Aabaraki is entering the studio. Each artist is given at least a day or two of studio time, depending on what needs to be accomplished. Applications run in three-month windows, and at the end of the summer, the next set of musicians will be able to apply online.

“By opening Converse Rubber Tracks, it’s a way for us to say thank you to musicians all over who have helped us become the brand we are and to provide a place for new artists to have access to resources they may not be able to afford,” said Converse Chief Marketing Officer Geoff Cottrill in a release. “This is our way to invest in the future of music and we couldn’t be more excited about it.”

Artists are given the opportunity to record on top of the line equipment with a staff of engineers, and when the tracks are finished, the artists themselves will retain all rights to their music. Although, as the Converse website explains, musicians will have the option of giving Converse limited rights so that the company can publish the tracks online and across social media sites.

Said Ra Ra Riot’s Rebecca Zeller in a statement released Wednesday: “Knowing how hard it is to make a living as a musician and the amount of money it takes to get into a studio of that caliber, it’s unbelievably generous for Converse to provide it for free… Coupled with the fact that artists retain all rights to their music is a testament to Converse.”

Guitar Center supplied the studio with equipment, instruments, and the Ocean Way HR2 large-format monitor system designed by Grammy award-winning producer/engineer Allen Sides. There will also be Fender, Gibson, Ernie Ball, BlackStar, Marshall and Schecter gear available for use.

Later this summer, Converse is hosting the Grammy Foundation’s annual Grammy Camp. The camp will be in Los Angeles in July and will be held at the Converse Rubber Tracks studio, Aug. 2-8.

Last 9/11 Miracle Survivor Ms Josephine Harris Passes Away

by iSpit

The story of her improbable rescue by New York City firefighters was among the most enduring to emanate from the horror of Sept. 11, 2001. It was told and retold: how a weary woman, Josephine Harris, was coaxed and carried to safety by six men from Ladder Company 6 in Chinatown who had rushed to the World Trade Center that morning.

It was a feat of timing, engineering and plain luck that when the rush of wind and noise came and the north tower fell away, the firefighters and Ms. Harris were not crushed in a sea of concrete, dust and steel as they were spread along the stairwell between the fourth and first floors. Rather, the building fell around them.

As Deputy Chief John A. Jonas explained, unlike the south tower, which leaned and toppled over, “ours peeled away like a banana.”

“And we were the banana,” he added. “We were at the bottom.”

It was so happy a story that the only disagreement seemed to arise over who had saved whom. Had the firefighters, led by Chief Jonas — he was then a captain — survived because they paused to help Ms. Harris, a bookkeeper for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, as they rushed to leave the north tower? Or had Ms. Harris, whose legs were weakened by fatigue, been lucky enough to live because of them?

Chief Jonas spoke on Saturday. On Wednesday, members of the Fire (more…)

Stranger Than Fiction: The 14 Year Old Murder Case Of Biggie Smalls Reopened

by iSpit

Not to be confused with this…

Authorities say the nearly 14-year-old case of the murder of Christopher “Biggie Smalls” Wallace in Los Angeles has been “reinvigorated” by new information and federal and local law enforcement are once again actively investigating the Brooklyn rapper’s death, according to CNN.
Wallace’s 1997 death, along with the murder of Tupac Shakur six months earlier, has long been one of the most-debated tragedies in hip-hop. Were the deaths the result of an East Coast-West Coast beef between Puff Daddy‘s Bad Boy Entertainment and Suge Knight‘s Death Row Records? Were the deaths outgrowths of the violent world both Biggie and 2Pac rapped about? Or were the deaths simply a coincidence?
Retired Los Angeles Police Detective Russell Poole told CNN that he believes (more…)

NBA Approves Mikhail Prokhorov’s Bid To Control New Jersey Nets

by iSpit

The first step in what the New Jersey Nets hope is a quick turnaround is in place.

New owner Mikhail Prokhorov is eager to get started on the rest.

Prokhorov’s purchase of the team was approved Tuesday by NBA’s owners, who welcomed the first non-North American into their club. The financial transaction was closed at 12:30 p.m. ET Wednesday, the team announced in a statement.

Russia’s richest man agreed to buy 80 percent of the Nets and 45 percent of an arena project in Brooklyn from developer Bruce Ratner late last year. Final approval of the sale was delayed until the state of New York had taken over all the land seized under eminent domain at the site of the team’s Barclays Center in Brooklyn. The long-delayed 18,000-seat arena is to open in 2012.

“This much-anticipated day has finally come and now the real fun begins of building a championship team with a state-of-the-art home in the Barclays Center at Atlantic Yards,” Prokhorov said. “It’s a wonderful opportunity to combine great sports and good business, and I look forward to working with Bruce Ratner and Forest City and with the Nets organization as we move ahead.

Legendary Singer, Actress Lena Horne Dead At 92

by iSpit

Singer, dancer and actress Lena Horne died at New York-Presbyterian Hospital on Sunday night, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Horne was 92.

She was one of the first African-Americans to sign a long-term movie contract with a major Hollywood studio when she joined MGM in 1942.

Horne’s expressive voice made her a singing star after Hollywood failed to give her roles that might have made her a big screen starlet.

Horne complained she was used as “window dressing” in white films, mostly limited to singing performances that could be easily edited out for play in southern theaters.

The light-complected Horne refused to go along with studio plans to promote her as a Latin American. (more…)
