CIA Monitors Facebook, Twitter: Five Million Tweets A Day

by iSpit

The Associated Press this morning reports an exclusive, explaining how the White House can receive real-time updates on a situation on the ground, leading up to a revolution, predicting crime and disorder, or the ‘mood in the air’ shortly after the death of Osama bin Laden.

The U.S. Central Intelligence Agency on a daily basis, out of an “anonymous industrial park in Virginia”, follows over 5 million tweets by users on the ground.

The ‘Open Source Center’, manned by a team the agency affectionately dubs the “vengeful librarians”, also trawls other social networking sites like Facebook, along with Internet chat rooms; all the way down to newspapers and anything that anyone can contribute to openly.

Along with the vast resources of the agency, the real-time information from an angry blog post to a tweet sent from a BlackBerry, location-based data is gathered and tied to a made phone call to collect as much information as possible. This gives those in the highest offices of the U.S. government a specific picture of a certain place, at a certain time, to predict when an event that may cause national instability, diplomatic harm or suchlike could occur.

The report goes on to suggest that the White House, courtesy of the intelligence gathered from the vast array of resources at their disposal, from the publicly-available content provided by citizens and journalists alike, “saw the uprising in Egypt coming”, but they did not know exactly when it would strike.

The facility was set up as a recommended action based on the report by the 9/11 Commission, with many working from the ‘industrial unit’ to U.S. embassies around the world, in a bid to get closer to the action on the ground.

Intelligence services rely on those speaking the specific dialects of difficult-to-understand languages, often those who grew up in the area and emigrated, or those with family still in the region, along with those with a vast array of degrees in specific subjects to formulate guidance based on the intelligence presented to them.

While many have suspected for some time, with the rare utterance of admittance, that the most clandestine intelligence services around the world monitor Facebook and Twitter, blogs and other content on the web, the report explains how “Facebook and Twitter… have become a key resource for following a fast moving crisis”.

By following messages, Facebook status updates and tweets from Bangkok during the recent uprising, journalists were hampered by the rioting and the army moving in, with traditional media slowing to a trickle. Citizen journalism, therefore, was the prime target for the agency, allowing dozens of ‘reporters’ to be honed in on to provide valuable, real-time information on the ground.

Mumia Abu Jamal – The World Weeps

by iSpit

Mumia Abu Jamal – The World Weeps

As the U.S. performed its semi-religious rites in memory of 9/11, it does so with little real question of why 9/11 happened–at least among average Americans.

For they have been ill-served by the media, primary educational systems and even many universities, which teaches approved lessons designed to instill and reinforce U.S. nationalism, while turning a blind eye to the real American history of the CIA and the military as it wreaks sheer havoc abroad.

For while these agencies often engage in secret carnage, their attacks are seldom secret to those who have borne the brunt of their mega-violence.

For them, for the vast majority of the people in the world, 9/11 sparked an imperial temper tantrum; wars against nations that had nothing to do with 9/11; wars that have left them shattered– shadows of their former selves.

Rome called its aggressions against foreign nations ”Pax Romana” (Latin for ‘the Peace of Rome‘), which really meant the destructive peace wrought by the Roman sword.

Scholars today speak of ”Pax Americana“, which means something quite similar to the Roman version.

War–unrelenting, for empire.

As the Empire spends more and more on war, it closes factories, schools, hospitals and homes (through foreclosures, for example).

All must serve empire.

The nation must sacrifice itself to such an infernal dream.

While the rest of the world weeps.

Obama’s Africa Speech: Lies, Hypocrisy, and a Prescription for Continued African Dependence

by iSpit

Q. Is Obama better than Bush?

A. It depends how you like your imperialism – with a white face or a black one.

By Stephen Gowans

US president Barack Obama’s speech at Accra, Ghana on July 11, 2009 was equal parts jaw dropping hypocrisy, outright fiction, sound advice for Africans if taken literally, and advocacy for institutions ideally suited to capital accumulation in Africa by Western investors. Africans should heed the US president’s call to embrace the idea that Africa’s future is up to Africans (and Africans alone) and to build their own nations, but the path Obama proposes, if followed, would condemn Africa to continued underdevelopment and perpetual dependence on the West.

It should come as a surprise to no one but the weakly naïve and politically untutored that the role of the US president in Africa is to promote and defend the interests of the United States, not Africans. This is so, even if the US president shares the skin color of Africa’s majority. What may not be so apparent, but which is true nevertheless, is that Obama represents the interests of his country’s hereditary capitalist families, banks, corporations and wealthy investors whose resources and backing have brought him to power, and in whose interests the logic of imperialism compels him to act. It is Obama’s goal as representative of US capital to open, and keep open, Africa’s vast resources to exploitation by Western, and particularly US, capital without impediments of corruption, war and pan-African, nationalist or socialist projects of independent development getting in the way. His color and African heritage give Obama a leg up on a white president, allowing him to immediately connect with an African audience. But his message is no less racist, imperialist and informed by the interests of Wall Street than that of his white predecessors.

Outright fiction

Obama used his speech to sell two fictions: (1) that Africa’s underdevelopment has nothing to do with colonialism and neo-colonialism, but is rooted in corruption, tribalism and Africans’ blaming others for their poverty; and (2) that (more…)

New Film Shows Princess Diana “Very Much Alive” After Car Crash

by iSpit

A new film entitled Unlawful Killing (to be released everywhere except the UK) will apparently be showing a pictures of Diana right after the accident…still alive and not dying. Furthermore, the movie will show Diana predicting the circumstances of her death. The movie is backed by Mohamed al-Fayed, the father of Diana’s fiancé who also died that night.

Unlawful Killing will probably not dwell on the occult and ritualistic side of things. It remains, after all, a mass media production. When cover-ups are too sloppy and evidence begin piling disproving them, limited concessions are made to quell the public’s questions. This movie might be a limited concession, where part of the big ugly truth is revealed in order to protect the “bigger uglier truth”. We’ll see.

The film sets out to prove a cover-up by the “establishment” over the death of Princess Diana. It has caused outrage in sections of the British press and is not scheduled for a UK release.

Directed by actor Keith Allen and backed by Mohamed al-Fayed, father of Dodi, the film is (more…)

CIA Opens Spy Chest To Reveal WWI-Era Secret Writing Techniques

by iSpit

Mata Hari 1876-1917

The CIA has declassified the six oldest documents in its secret vault revealing a host of invisible ink recipes and one way to open sealed envelopes without being caught.

Once reserved for covert operatives and other secret-keepers the documents in some cases are a chemists dream and the stuff of spy novels. One document outlines the chemicals and techniques necessary for developing certain types of secret writing ink and one memorandum dated June 14, 1918 — written in French — reveals the formula used for German secret ink and how to use it.

In another document, the user would need to assemble hydrogen sulfide, potassium ferrocyanide and iron sulfate to disclose a number of different chemicals that might be used in various secret writings. For example, hydrogen sulfide combined with a little ammonia would reveal any writing that used an iron, tin or copper base.

There are simpler techniques described as well: One involves dusting the letter with powdered charcoal to (more…)

U.S. General: Ground Troops to Invade Libya

by iSpit

[vodpod id=Video.5929380&w=425&h=350&fv=%26rel%3D0%26border%3D0%26]

Army General Carter Ham told Congress today that while sending a globalist ground invasion force including American troops into Libya may not be “ideal,” it is probably the only way to make sure the CIA organized rebels and al-Qaeda defeat Gaddafi and his troops.

The use of an international ground force is a possible plan to bolster rebels fighting forces loyal to the Libyan leader, Ham said at a Senate Armed Services Committee hearing, the AP and CBS report today.

“I suspect there might be some consideration of that,” the general responded when asked directly about ground troops. “My personal view at this point would be that that’s probably not the ideal circumstance, again for the regional reaction that having American boots on the ground would entail.”

Ham admitted that the poorly trained rebels are incapable of pulling off a decisive victory in the north African country. The general characterized the current situation as a stalemate. In fact, Gaddafi has pushed the rebels back and dealt them one defeat after (more…)

Mumia Abu Jamal – Cointelpros: Then And Now

by iSpit

Mumia Abu Jamal – CointelprosThenAndNow

Written for the People’s Hearing on Racism and Police, Oakland, California, February 19 and 20, 2011
Ona Move! Long Live John Africa! All Power to the People!
I greet you all as we look at what’s happening in the world—and try to figure out why—and how? When most people hear the acronym COINTELPRO (FBI code-speak for its COunter INTELligence PROgram), they think of the 1960s and perhaps the Black Panther Party, the Weathermen, or the antiwar movement.
In fact, this government program didn’t begin in the ’60s; nor did it end in the ’70s—despite what newspaper accounts report, or what government PR people claim.
I know this because I did the research, read government reports, read actual files—many uncovered by the break-in of FBI field offices in Media, PA, in the early ’70s—and works by FBI defectors, who told the inside story.
And, of course, I wrote about it in my book, We Want Freedom: A Life In the Black Panther Party, which has a whole chapter on COINTELPRO.
I assure you, it didn’t begin there, and didn’t end there.
Did you know that there were FBI files on Marcus Garvey (dated 1919)? On Martin Luther King? On Dick Gregory? Did you know the FBI tried to get the Mafia to take out a hit on Dick Gregory—a comedian? Yes—I’ve read the file.
What activists have to understand is that the government—every government (more…)
