So the story goes that #ClassicFriday was just a trending topic that I made up one day to make fun of Nick Cannon. The term “classic” is overrated these days & is thrown around like “N*gga” or “Swag”…recklessly. The irony in Nick Cannon (or most of these other current artists) being in possesion of any type of classic is laughable, especially seeing as how Nick Cannon’s entire (countable) discography consists of 4 songs, 2 show themes & a host of sketch parodies.

Anywho, I was talking with Najee & Blair about classic music, classic eras of music & out of that talk came a mixtape… Enjoy! (Stream only for now)

Killer Mike goes in on behalf of the disenfranchised in “Burn.” The video features Cameos from Oscar Grant’s friends & family, Diddy, Machine Gun Kelly, Curren$y, Roach Gigz, Mistah FAB, Philthy Rich, Cool Kids and more

Ex-BART cop & murderer Johannes Meherle will be released today. Meherle was sentenced to two years in prison for shooting and killing Oscar Grant, an unarmed man lying face down on a BART train platform at the time of the shooting. The shooting and light sentence drew major protests throughout the country. Mehserle has been in custody at Los Angeles County Jail since being convicted July 8, and is eligible for release with credit for “good time,” which is time served before his trial. Prisoners are awarded one day for every day spent behind bars.

According to Henry K. Lee of the San Francisco Chronicle, Grant’s uncle Cephus Johnson said of the release:

“Of course it’s painful,” said Johnson, 53, who lives in San Jose. “We knew it was coming one day. But as it approached, there were more sleepless nights.”He called Mehserle’s release a reflection of “the total injustice that we received.” Johnson said he and other family members plan to be in Los Angeles over the weekend and on Monday to protest.

No words.

Hip-Hop Marketing: An Interview with Nah Right’s Eskay

by iSpit

DZ: A lot of rap artists are getting involved in Twitter and doing very well with stuff like trending hashtags. Does social media actually sell records?

Eskay: I think social media contributes to the public’s awareness about an artist and that awareness then (hopefully) turns into album or single sales. Social media in the context of any recording artist is a marketing tool, and like any marketing tool can backfire on you and end up hurting you if you don’t put enough thought into it.

DZ: Beyond record and ticket sales what are Hip-Hop marketers measuring? What should they be measuring, what’s the most important metric? Followers, fans, mix tape downloads, etc?

Eskay: I think that online, it’s an artist’s overall digital footprint. How many pageviews does their website get? How many Twitter followers? How many retweets, how many Facebook friends/fans, number of mixtape downloads and Youtube views, all of that stuff can give you a picture of what kind of noise a particular act is making. At the same time though, I think you have to take those numbers with a grain of salt. On the “rap Internet”, numbers are often fabricated by dishonest artists and sites, and even legitimate numbers can fail to give you an (more…)

Can Hip-Hop Handle Lil B’s ‘I’m Gay’ Album?

by iSpit

Download Video or MP3 -Iamnotarapperispit.com

by Ann Powers and Tavia Nyong’o
the prolific, Internet-obsessed Bay Area rapper, announced at Coachella that he would call his next album I’m Gay – a provocation that extends past the comfort zones of many rap fans. Lil B is known for assuming alternate identities (previous releases include the songs “I’m Miley Cyrus” and “I’m Charlie Sheen”), but this was his most surprising move yet. GLAAD questioned his motives – was this a prank, or a stealth macho move akin to other rappers’ use of the phrase “no homo?” Lil B’s response – surprisingly serious and empathetic – was to express “major love for the gay and lesbian community,” despite apparent death threats.

This isn’t the first time gay culture and hip-hop have come into contact, but since Lil B is a rapper right on the fringe of the mainstream, and he’s putting himself in the middle of the genre’s long-term conflict over homosexuality, Ann Powers wrote to Tavia Nyong’o, professor of performance studies at NYU and blogger at Hear is Queer to talk about where his decision might take the debate.

Tavia:

Very interesting developments lately at the spot where hip-hop culture meets sexual politics.

This would all strike me as an isolated stunt – claiming that you’re using “gay” as in “happy,” as Lil B did, sounds kind of like something my grade-schooler would do. Except that it’s just one of several recent events within hip-hop that suggest the scene’s tolerance toward sexual difference may be growing. Big Freedia, queen of the New Orleans “sissy bounce” scene, released her first EP and is bringing her “go homo” anthems nationwide on a successful tour. Hardcore rap’s pop star 50 Cent issued a surprisingly empathetic defense of Mr. Cee after the radio personality was caught en flagrante with a young person who may be transgender. And the Pacific Northwest collective Rainbow Noise caused a Youtube stir with its jammin’ cut, “Imma Homo.”

Hip-hop, long assumed by most to be a stronghold of homophobia, suddenly seems (more…)

‘Hip Hop: A Cultural Odyssey’ book, Grammy Museum Exhibit Celebrate The Musical Movement

by iSpit

Decades before Jay-Z, Nicki Minaj, Eminem or Lil Wayne made names for themselves in mainstream hip-hop, Afrika Bambaataa, Grandmaster Flash and Kool Herc introduced the movement to the first adopters, who spread the genre to the masses via not only music, but dancing, art and DJing.

That rich history of hip-hop culture, dating back to the days of b-boys and b-girls breaking on streets, DJs scratching turntables, MCs battling each other on corners and graffiti writers tagging wherever and whenever, is explored in a new coffee-table book and accompanying Grammy Museum exhibit, which opens Tuesday.

“Hip-Hop: A Cultural Odyssey” is a massive, sprawling 420 page opus that includes exclusive photos and interviews with the pioneers, trendsetters and icons of the genre and provides an exhaustive account on the birth, evolution and global ripple effect hip-hop has had over the last four decades.“There was a realization that there was a huge void in the market for a book like this,” said Jordan Sommers, editor of the book and president of ARIA Multimedia Entertainment, the book’s publisher. “Coffee table books are usually associated with iconic subjects, culturally (more…)

G. Dep’s Lawyer Rep’d Sammy “The Bull” Gravano, Sean Bell cop & Osama Bin Laden’s Homies

by iSpit

Download Video or MP3 -Iamnotarapperispit.com

Trevell “G. Dep” Coleman has a new lawyer working for him on his murder case, and the high profile criminal defense attorney has quite a long list of controversial clients. XXLMag.com recently spoke with Anthony L. Ricco—who has represented such people as the police officer that shot Sean Bell (NYPD Detective Gescard F. Isnora), infamous mob turncoat Sammy “The Bull” Gravano, and a number of terrorists linked to Osama Bin Laden—to find out why a person of his pedigree decided to defend Dep.

Ricco said he chose to take the rapper’s case because, like the ex-Diddy protégé, he too was born and raised in Harlem and felt as though it was his duty to help. “I grew up in Harlem,” Ricco told XXL, “and I found him, Trevell Coleman’s case, fascinating. Fascinating as an older guy in the neighborhood, who happens to be a lawyer, looking at the way a younger guy who tried to make it out got caught.”

Furthermore, Ricco explained that in this particular case he is not looking for financial gain. “It has taken the African American community hundreds of years to produce X amount of lawyers,” he continued. “What’s the point of the community producing lawyers if they become so expensive that they’re out of reach to the community? So some of (more…)

Jay Electronica’s Interview w/Elliott Wilson (RESPECT Magazine)

by iSpit

Do This My Way
NOLA’s Jay Electronica wants to be successful. But on his own terms. And, in his most candid interview to date, in his own words.
As Told To Elliott Wilson

By the time you read this: Jay Electronica may have, at long last, landed a record deal. Or not. It’s hard to predict the future of the enigmatic MC who electrified the rap world from the end of ’09 to early 2010 with a song called “Exhibit C.” Produced by Just Blaze, who broke the record while guest-hosting Tony Touch’s Shade 45 Sirius show, the soulful sonic boom ushered in the rise of this NOLA brother with the Nas flow—captivatingly complex lyrics and vivid storytelling.

After being wooed by the record industry’s biggest execs for a year Elect is still, at press time, a free agent. But recent dealings with Mr. Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter may be changing that. In his modest Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn apartment, the man born Timothy Thedford spoke for over three hours about his almost Forrest Gump-like journey through this thing called life. Aiming to do justice to his jam-packed existence, RESPECT. hosts Electronica unfiltered. Here’s a toast to a true original.

“My light is brilliant.”

“Exhibit C” magnified everything. Everybody was coming at one time. I’m the kind of person where if I get to a point where I can’t make this decision then I’m gonna stand still. I don’t care. I’ll stand still for two years, 20 years. I’m 34 years old. I’m still learning myself, but I know myself a little bit, so I stand still. People was telling me, “Oh, you buggin’, this is the time.”

By the time March [2010] came, it was crazy. I coulda signed any kinda deal at that time. I coulda took these publishing companies to the cleaners. I met anybody you can think of. Like, I’m gonna entertain what you sayin’, but we already have a fundamental disagreement in the way that we view the music business and the treatment of people, period. I need to feel like I’m talking to my grandmother. I need to feel like I’m talking to my sister or my mama to feel comfortable. If I’m not at that comfort level then I’m completely uncomfortable.
