Independent Retailers’ Open Letter to Jay-Z and Kanye West About ‘Watch the Throne’ Exclusives
In response to Jay-Z and Kanye West‘s decision to offer exclusive sales programs to iTunes and Best Buy for their forthcoming “Watch the Throne” LP, a number of independent retailers have written an open letter to the duo protesting the plan, calling it a “short-sighted strategy.”
Dear Jay-Z and Kanye West,
Independent record stores serve our communities. Our passion is music, and we convey this to the millions of customers who come to our stores. That’s what we do.
Four years ago independent music stores across the country banded together to create Record Store Day. Our goal was to counter the negative media coverage about the supposed demise of record stores brought on by the closing of the Tower stores and to respond to the music business practices that fans deemed to be manipulative and onerous.
We reached out to the artist community to see if they would join us, and the response was overwhelming, with words of support coming in from Paul McCartney, Erykah Badu, Tom Waits, Chuck D, the Foo Fighters and countless others. Working with their label partners, many of these musicians created limited edition works of art, including vinyl and CDs made especially for music-specialty retail. Hundreds of these artists took the opportunity to perform, DJ, and interact with their fans in our record stores. Here in the U.S., Record Store Day lifted the entire music business by 8% and contributed to the growth in music sales. Record Store Day is now one of the biggest music events in history, with millions of people participating worldwide. We also continue to work throughout the year with labels, artists and managers and run regular promotions via physical independent retail and recordstoreday.com.
We are responding to the bad news that your new album will not be available to independent record stores until after iTunes gets a window of exclusivity. We also learned that the deluxe version (which is what the true music fans who shop our stores will want, by an overwhelming majority) will only be available at Best Buy exclusively for a period of time. We believe this is a short-sighted strategy, and that your decisions will be doing great damage to over 1,700 independent record stores — stores that have supported you and your music for years.
We know that you are busy, and that you put most of your energies into creating great music, but we are writing to you in the hope that you will hear us and take the time to rectify this matter. As representatives of the independent record store music community, we are asking you to allow record stores and music fans equal access to your new album.

8 Teenagers Shot At Wacka Flacka’s Indiana Concert

Eight teenage boys were shot following an Atlanta rapper’s concert in Indiana Friday night
The shooting occurred in the parking lot of World of Skates in Gary, where Waka Flocka Flame, aka Juaqin Malphurs, had just performed
The victims were taken to three hospitals, where some remained Saturday. Police say they ranged in age from 14 to 18, with wounds in the legs, wrist, stomach or back. The injuries weren’t believed to be life-threatening.
The Post-Tribune newspaper reported that a “hype man” entertaining the crowd before Waka Flocka Flame took the stage pitted “East Side” versus “West Side.” That might have prompted the shooting, Cmdr. Michael Mallett told the newspaper.
“The kids have separated themselves into east and west sides,” he said. “They’ve been doing it for many years now, but it’s gotten worse, especially when you have entertainers making references to East Side vs. West Side. The youth in our community have taken it to heart.”
Someone opened fire as a group of about 200 teens waited in the parking lot for rides. One victim told police he was shot in the stomach by a black man with dreadlocks who was wearing a red hat, the newspaper reported.
Police have made no arrests in the Friday night shootings.
A day earlier, Malphurs was involved in a fight in downtown Atlanta between groups affiliated with rappers Gucci Mane and Young Jeezy. A security guard employed by Malphurs was detained. Malphurs, a member of Gucci Mane’s 1017 Brick Squad, had a swollen eye afterward.
Shots were fired during the altercation at Walter’s Clothing, but no one was hit.
In January, Malphurs was shot in the arm while washing his car on Old National Highway. Police said he was approached by armed men demanding his jewelry.

The 10 biggest franchise-killing contracts in baseball
1. Vernon Wells, OF, Jays; 5 years, $99 million remaining on contract. When the Jays signed Wells to an extension before the 2007 season, they thought they were locking up a franchise player for years to come. In fact, they locked themselves into the game’s worst contract. Wells had a pretty good year at the plate in 2008 (.840 OPS), and a pretty poor one in 2009 (.711 OPS). However, according to advanced fielding stats, he’s been atrocious in the field, costing Toronto about 20 runs per season with his defense in center. Part of the reason the Wells contract is so bad isn’t his fault. Wells’ contract is back-loaded, so Toronto was actually getting a bargain in ’08 and ’09 in the prime years of his career. The Blue Jays failed to take advantage of the additional financial flexibility and now it’s time to pay the piper. Wells is owed $99 million over the next five years. Since 2004, Wells has been about a league-average hitter (OPS+ of 105), but a poor fielder. The average $20 million he is owed for the next 5 years is way more than he’s worth, especially considering he’ll be 35 at the end the contract.
Trade Outlook: Unlikely. There’s no doubt Toronto would love to unload Wells. However, he has a full no-trade clause and the most untradeable contract in baseball.
