Kwanzaa: A Celebration Of Family Community & Culture

by iSpit

Kwanzaa is an African American and Pan-African holiday which celebrates family, community and culture. Celebrated from 26 December thru 1 January, its origins are in the first harvest celebrations of Africa from which it takes its name. The name Kwanzaa is derived from the phrase “matunda ya kwanza” which means “first fruits” in Swahili, a Pan-African language which is the most widely spoken African language.

The first-fruits celebrations are recorded in African history as far back as ancient Egypt and Nubia and appear in ancient and modern times in other classical African civilizations such as Ashantiland and Yorubaland. These celebrations are also found in ancient and modern times among societies as large as empires (the Zulu or kingdoms (Swaziland) or smaller societies and groups like the Matabele, Thonga and Lovedu, all of southeastern Africa. Kwanzaa builds on the five fundamental activities of Continental Africanfirst fruit” celebrations: ingathering; reverence; commemoration; recommitment; and celebration. Kwanzaa, then, is:

The Powder Room: 11-29-11 Look Of The Week By IHateFashion

by IHateFashion

LOOK OF THE WEEK: Olive green and fur are some of the hottest trends this year, so I have put together a look that incorporates those trends that you have in your closet. Chunky boots paired with sleek and waxed medium-rise leggings make for a chic look. Top it off with a cozy cropped sweater and a smartly embellished military jacket. Add some simple earrings, throw up your hair in a bun or whatever works for you and you’ll be ready to hit the streets. To top the look off I have chosen the D&G Dolce & Gabbana Three-Zip Lily Twist Satchel. Perfect for on-the-go and especially cozy with its soft fur body; this bag makes a statement all on its own.

And what makes this outfit so great it can be worn to work, night out with girls, a simple night on the town it’s just so versatile.

D&G Dolce & Gabbana - Three-Zip Lily Twist Satchel $1,790

Admire Wedges $620

Trojan Asteroid Dances Ahead Of The Earth As It Orbits of The Sun

by iSpit

Earth and asteroid 2010TK7 orbiting the sun together. The path of the asteroid is traced in green.

Astronomers have spotted a huge lump of rock that hurtles through space ahead of the Earth in its orbit around the sun.

The rock, which is 300 metres across, is known as a “Trojan asteroid” because it shares Earth’s orbit but remains far enough away it will never collide with the planet.

Trojan asteroids can follow planetary orbits if they stay close to positions 60 degrees ahead or behind the planet. At these points, gravitational forces and orbital motion balance each other, producing stable relative locations in space.

Martin Connors at Athabasca University in Alberta, Canada, used Nasa‘s Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer satellite and ground-based telescopes to identify the Trojan asteroid, named 2010TK7. The study is published in Nature.

Similar Trojans have been found orbiting the sun in step with Jupiter, Neptune and Mars.

Money Lessons From Dr. Seuss…

by iSpit

A Dr. Seuss story may not conjure up images of Wall Street, but believe it or not, many Dr. Seuss (a.k.a. Theodor Geisel) classics can teach us quite a bit about personal finance. From the trouble with indecision, as portrayed in “Hunches in Bunches,” to the importance of finding a career that you love (“Oh, the Places You’ll Go!”), the good doctor encouraged bright minds to follow their hearts, question the world and value the things that can’t be bought over money itself.

At MainStreet, we feel there’s no better way to start a conversation about money with your children than by sharing a terrific story. So in honor of Dr. Seuss’s birthday and National Reading Day, here are the eight money lessons Dr. Seuss tried to teach us, along with some expert tips to get your children thinking about finance.

Never Choose? You’ll Always Lose

“It’s awfully awfully awful when you can’t make up your mind!” — “Hunches in Bunches”

“Hunches in Bunches” centers on a boy who can’t seem to decide what to do one day. He sits in his room pondering all the things he could do — play football, eat six hot dogs or go outside — but just when it seems that he’s made up his mind, he finds a reason to go against it, leaving the day’s activities in limbo.

In terms of personal finance, indecision stems from a lack of financial literacy, says Lori Mackey, founder of prosperity4kids.com, a site that creates personal finance learning materials for children. “If you have more education, you feel more comfortable about making [money] decisions. But a lot of people feel paralyzed because they don’t know enough and aren’t confident enough to make those decisions.” The takeaway from Hunches, then, is that money is a choice, Mackey says. “You have choices with the friends you’re going to pick. You have a choice to spend it or save it. Think before you do it.”

Help your children make positive money decisions by encouraging them to follow their gut, says Mackey. Ask them, “What does that voice say to you? If something doesn’t feel right, (more…)

IAmNotADictionary Phrase Of The Day: Towel Permanence

by iSpit

The need or desire to use the same towel each time after showering. This may be a favorite towel with sentimental value, or the beach sized one that covers all your parts. This condition is frequently only suffered by one member of a family, causing much frustration upon finding that someone else has used “your” towel.
Boy: “Mom, where’s my green towel?”
Mom: “It’s in the wash, hon. I used it to dry off the dog earlier.”

Boy: “Damn you, towel permanence. Now I cant shower.”

What we'll drive next – The Prius Hackers

by iSpit

The Prius hackers

Paul Guzyk and Daniel Sherwood are computer geeks who co-founded 3Prong Power, a Berkeley business that transforms standard Toyota Priuses into all-electric green machines.

In 1999, Guzyk moved to California and rediscovered an old passion for cars after tinkering with a Prius. He found that in many ways the Toyota hybrid was more like a computer than an automobile. Notably, it ran on recognizable computer standards similar to those found in an office network.

“I found that modifying the Prius is like getting your computer to do what you want it to do,” says Guzyk.
