Late Pass: Jade Alston – Single On A Saturday Night (EP)

by iSpit

I dont know what the f*ck I have been doing or how it is even possible that I missed this incredible collection of music. For those of you who are also as late as I am, please dont delay any further…

R&B singer/songwriter Jade Alston releases her debut EP, ‘Single On A Saturday Night’. The set features Grammy-Nominated songwriter Claude Kelly, who co-wrote the lead single, “Missing You Lately,” while Grammy-Winning producer Chuck Harmony also contributed to the project.

‘Single on a Saturday Night’ tells a story about a single woman on a Saturday night.  Each track off the EP plays like a journal entry into Jade’s personal diary.  “Searching,” “Love of My Life” and “Sober” are entries into Jade’s journal to which anyone who has ever had a love interest can relate.  With “Missing You Lately,” Jade writes about that phone call which never comes from that special someone.

Although the tone and texture of Jade’s voice is like Toni Braxton, conceptually, Jade is the female singing version of Kanye West and Drake.  Jade blends Kanye’s soul, honesty and originality with Drake’s versatility and ability to relate.  Like the HBO character Carrie Bradshaw, Jade writes about women’s issues and has distinctive style.  Jade’s uniqueness brings freshness to the R&B industry that is apparent to listeners.

Miguel Cotto vs. Antonio Margarito II (Live Video Stream)

by iSpit

Its in Spanish for now…

Boxing fans, you must have been awfully good boys and girls this year. Santa Claus is bringing you an early Christmas present on Saturday night.

Miguel Cotto of Puerto Rico will seek to avenge his 2008 loss to Antonio Margarito of Mexico for Cotto’s WBA Super Welterweight title at Madison Square Garden in New York. The Garden is a sell-out, which is rare for a non-heavyweight fight. It shows the keen level of interest in what may be one of the most exciting, action-packed bouts of 2011.

Puerto Rican fans will be squarely behind their native son, who is looking for justice after his bloody beating three years ago by Margarito, resulting in an 11th round TKO. Cotto and his fans believe Margarito’s win was aided by the use of illegal hand wraps.

Margarito and his camp deny it, and nothing was proven. However, Margarito was caught with illegal hand wraps in 2009 prior to his fight with Shane Mosley, a fight he lost. He didn’t fight again for a year. When he did, he took a brutal beating by Manny Pacquiao. In the fight, his right orbital bone was broken and his eye had to be surgically repaired.

Margarito’s eye became an issue of concern for the New York State Athletic Commission in this fight. The Commission withheld Margarito’s license until he cleared another eye exam ten days ago in New York.

Cotto has a loss to Manny Pacquiao in common with Margarito since they last met. His November 2009 fight with Pacquiao was similar in that both Cotto and Margarito were both taken out handily by Pacquiao, though Cotto lasted one more round and got in some decent punishment against Pac-Man.

There hasn’t been such a heated rivalry in boxing for a long time. The ill will has been three years in the making and time has not healed any of Cotto’s wounds. Cotto and Margarito’s strong dislike of each other is the real deal. Cotto firmly believes Margarito is a cheater and played with his life. Margarito says it’s all trash talk and he’ll prove it. Things are so acrimonious the two fighters weren’t permitted to pose for the traditional face-to-face pre-fight publicity shots. Promoter Bob Arum stood between them.

Make no mistake: There will be blood Saturday night. If you are squeamish, don’t watch. These two both like to mix it up. They both take punishment well and will fight until they have nothing left.

Margarito says he’s going to fight Cotto the same way he did the first time, constantly pressing forward and working underneath with power. Margarito is working with trainer Robert Garcia for the second time.

Cotto is working with former Cuban Olympic boxing team coach Dr. Pedro Benitez, who defected and is working his first professional fight. Cotto ended his relationship with trainer Emmanuel Steward due to scheduling conflicts. Dr. Benitez works systematically and seems to have opened up new training techniques to Cotto. Cotto says he will use speed and conditioning along with upgraded footwork skills to move around Margarito, inflicting damage while working to avoid getting hit by Margarito inside at close range.

Cotto, age 31, is 36-2 (29), with his only losses to Pacquiao and Margarito. Margarito, age 33, is 38-7 (27).  Cotto weighed in at 152-1/4; Margarito at 154-1/2.

This fight should look a lot like the first one: demanding, relentless, and bloody. Margarito will be willing to take a lot of punches for the chance to bring a few well-chosen blows against Cotto. In the later rounds all semblance of skill and technique could go out the window and the fight might become an all-out brawl.

The unknown factor is the condition of Margarito’s right eye. Cotto has admitted that if Margarito presents the opportunity, Cotto will go after the weak eye. Margarito brushes off questions about his eye, but if he feels the slightest bit protective or concerned and becomes distracted by it, it may give Cotto an advantage.

In the end, I don’t believe Cotto will need any advantage. He is fueled by a sense of righting a wrong, seeking justice for what happened to him in 2008. As long as he can channel his fury, he should win a brutal, close fight in the later rounds, perhaps with a TKO.  Boxing fans, it’s the Twelve Rounds of Christmas

Community: Season 03 Episode 01 – Biology 101 (Full Video)

by iSpit

Greendale’s favorite diverse study group is back as Community returns for its third season of meticulously sharp writing and inspired story ideas. Unlike most comedies out there, and especially on NBC, this is one that genuinely has fun with its source material focused around the concept of college life. The premiere reminds viewers how things have changed since the series debut yet the character’s conflicting personalities still remain as strong as ever.

After last season’s terrific two-part Western/Star Wars spoof finale, Pierce humbly left the group after a year of lies, pills and jealousy that made him somewhat of an evil villain bent on destroying any happiness usually revolving around Jeff, and ultimately the group itself. The show’s writers have realized Pierce went off the deep end last season and want to bring his character back to being the narcissistic rude old man he originally was in the beginning. That’s what this episode was trying to reinforce, if you were excluded from the study group, how crazy would it make you become? Jeff learns this the hard way.

As usual, Community always has clever opening scenes before the credits and in the premiere, issues focused on the show’s cult following were addressed. During a dream sequence in song form, Jeff, Britta and Abed insist that things this year will finally be ordinary (boring) and therefore make them more appealing to society (viewers) compared to previous attempts. Once the three awake, you appreciate how Community enjoys being a constant inside joke among its loyal fans and is content with sacrificing widespread approval for originality. It’s a brilliant touch that fits in with the series’ attitude of sarcastic undertones.

The episode then gets us reacquainted with the study group after the summer break. Not much serious drama to unpack here but it appears that Troy and Abed are living together, which will most likely play a part throughout the season. The main plot device revolved around Jeff getting kicked out of Biology class, by Greendale’s first teacher who actually appears to know what he’s doing, and Pierce replacing his position. Annie also has a good bit where she hits Jeff with a dose of his own medicine, implying that they are still friends outside the study table.

As usual, Winger brushes this aside due to his over-sized level of arrogance and does his popular “I don’t need them” routine that Joel McHale continually nails. His antics trying to get back into the class and chasing Chang through the school’s air vents shows the desperate lengths someone will go to get back to normality.

Once Jeff goes off the hinges, his inner psyche is unveiled. The sequence in his mind is truly hilarious and unsettling at the same time (Jeff eating his phone). His attack on the table is a little unnecessary but it proves Jeff’s point that a piece of furniture can destroy the definition of friendship.

Things resolve themselves with Pierce acting as a scapegoat to get Jeff back into the group. Problems aren’t all fixed, but by the last shot in the episode it seems that things are back to normal for now.

The sub-plots this episode are interesting but don’t do much to evolve situations. Abed’s yearning for a new show to replace Cougar Town as his favorite pastime goes nowhere quick. While it’s initially funny, especially Abed’s creature-like squeal for comfort when he’s distressed (only Troy can calm him down), after a while, it grows old. Meanwhile Dean Pelton has his own continuing storyline too, as he gets in over his head when he takes on Greendale’s Vice Dean, played by the great John Goodman.

It’s fun to see the two square off, only for Dean Pelton to get whipped into submission once Goodman shows his true power of dominance. Having an actor of Goodman’s caliber added to the cast is a marvelous addition since he is someone who’s willing to be funny and extreme at any given time. The fact that Greendale has no money this season opens up a whole slew of doors for Community to enter with new ideas brewing on the horizon.

Chang, for example, appears to be the school’s security guard this semester, which will obviously lead to hilarity and countless moments of enforced chaos. Jeff’s remark after seeing him in full uniform pretty much sums it up, “this is the year we all die.”

Overall, it was a relatively somber episode that had more ups then downs. It was a gentle reintroduction for the study group while adding new elements that will grow over the course of time. Additions like Goodman and Michael K. Williams from HBO’s The Wire, as a former inmate turned science teacher, make the proceedings even more of a fresh viewing experience.

Community’s new season is off and running, so it’s just a matter of time before wittier movie parodies and more innovative filming techniques (remember the claymation episode from the last holiday special?) start popping up week after week. Fans of well-written and superbly performed comedy television can rejoice, Community has returned.

HBO Presents: George Carlin – It’s Bad For Ya (Full Video)

by iSpit

It’s Bad For Ya, Carlin’s Emmy nominated 14th and final HBO special from March of 2008 features Carlin’s noted irreverent and unapologetic observations on topics ranging from death, religion, bureaucracy, patriotism, overprotected children and big business to the pungent examinations of modern language and the decrepit state of the American culture.

For this unprecedented 14th HBO special, Carlin once again comes up with an hour of brand new material that not only makes you laugh, but makes you think.

George Carlin will always remain part of the popular lexicon for his “Seven Dirty Words” routine, and as a comedian who was never afraid to challenge his audience.

It’s Bad For Ya will scare and offend many. For those wanting the hippy dippy weatherman or A Place for my Stuff or Baseball/football type of humor light, this will feel like a sledgehammer. For those of us who have grown over the years with George and appreciated his loud wake up calls. From his dissing George Bush and the gulf war on….this is more vintage Lion in Winter George. Lambasting the child worship culture, the fraudulent SELF ESTEEM movement, pointing out that unlike his father, Governor bush, hasn’t truly been elected president in the traditional way, and our dead relatives aren’t hoovering above us guiding us through our daily duties. There is much more to the set..and while I slightly prefer the previous Life is Worth Losing due to its in your face wake up approach..there is much to enjoy here and take note of ….George claims that we are soft and easily placated with cellphones that make us pancake and rub our balls! …and he’s right. Oh…and he suggests if you really believe you have RIGHTS? “Google Japanese Americans 1942 and find out about your precious RIGHTS”.

Dave Chappelle – Killin’ Them Softly (Full Video)

by iSpit

Killin’ Them Softly is easily one of HBO’s best comedy specials, catching star Dave Chappelle at a career high in 2000 and with an abundance of hysterical, highly polished material. Taking his time, stretching concepts and bits like a master, Chappelle plunges into a wealth of anecdotes and observations about the influx of white people into Washington, D.C. (where this show was recorded) since the 1980s. (“Who are the scariest people? White guys in black gangs. No telling what they did to get respect.”) There are fantastic tales of racing cops with Chappelle’s white friend, Chip, and a great story about being left alone in a limousine outside a busy crack house. Other good stuff: introducing a kid to a PePe Le Pew cartoon and realizing too late the skunk is a sex criminal, and why we should know our 911 calls will end up played on television.

Originally aired on HBO in 2000, “Killin’ Them Softly” is without a doubt one of the funniest standup specials available. You’ll never laugh more than you will here. Dave spares no victim as he addresses issues about the Police, Racism, Sesame Street, Kids, and the Government. It’s hilarious! Comedy doesn’t get any better than this!

George Carlin – You Are All Diseased (Full Video)

by iSpit

Legendary comic Carlin comes back to the Beacon theater to angrily rant about airport security, germs, cigars, angels, children and parents, men, names, religion, god, advertising, Bill Jeff and minorities. This is George Carlin’s 1999 HBO Special (from The Beacon Theater New York). It is George Carlin’s 11th HBO Comedy Special.

George Carlin shows his comedy has changed in the years since he started 43 years ago with this special. Here, anger fuels his comedy more than ever before, and it helps alot. Here, he attacks Children and parents, cigars, angels, theme restaurants, advertising (ironically), religion, god, airport security and germs. With this, he brings a whole new type of stylish comedy that makes Richard Pryor look like Carrot Top. At 61, George comes back with his best, and wins. Best comedy special of the year. A++

Finally: Promoted Tweets Set To Appear in Your Twitter Timeline…Soon

by iSpit

Twitter users will start seeing ads in their timeline over the next few weeks. The company officially announced on Thursday that a new Promoted Tweetsoption will roll out with a number of advertisers.

This is a big move for Twitter and certainly its most invasive advertising play to-date. Up until now, Promoted Tweets have only shown up in Twitter search or along user’s sidebars as a promoted Trending Topic. Now, Promoted Tweets will show up directly in the stream, with one caveat: You’ll only see ads from accounts that you already follow.

In that sense, Twitter hopes to make the ads something that users will find useful or at least be able to stomach. The company writes in a blog post: “From the start, our philosophy around advertising has been simple: We put our users first and strive to create products that enrich the Twitter experience for every Twitter user.”

The new breed of Promoted Tweets will sit “at or near” the top of a user’s timeline. However, once a user sees it for the first time, it will begin scrolling down the timeline like other tweets. Twitter also says that the tweets can be “easily dismissed from your timeline with a single click.”

Initial advertisers for the new program include a number of companies that already have significant Twitter followings, including Starbucks, JetBlue, Gatorade, Groupon, HBO and Sephora. A number of non-profits including The American Red Cross and charity: water are also participating.

The launch doesn’t come as a surprise — it’s long been suspected that Twitter would put ads in the stream. Mashable reported exclusively in June that such a product would be launched within the next two months. Now that they’re here, we’ll see if more prominent Promoted Tweets are the new DickBar or the golden monetization goose that Twitter’s been searching for.

What do you think of the new Promoted Tweets format? Let us know in the comments.

Time Warner CEO Jeff Bewkes on Netflix & The ‘Theory’ Of Cord-Cutting

by iSpit

I caught Jeff Bewkes, Time Warner CEO at CES, fresh of the stage with Verizon CEO Ivan Seidenberg [VZ 35.36 -0.56 (-1.56%) ].

Bewkes was Seidenberg’s special guest, brought up to talk about “TV Everywhere,” Time Warner’s system which allows cable subscribers to access their premium cable content from Internet-enabled devices, like your laptop or now Verizon smartphones. (The video Bewkes showed during the keynote featured CNBC!)

Bewkes is incredibly bullish on what the new tablets and smartphones screens here at CES mean for Time Warner’s bottom line. More screens mean more opportunities for viewers to watch Time Warner’s shows or read Time Inc. magazines. Consuming more content means more ad and subscription revenue for Time Warner [TWX 33.47 0.19 (+0.57%) ].

Does Netflix [NFLX 186.65 -1.23 (-0.65%) ] pose a threat to Time Warner’s premium cable channels like HBO?

Will consumers cut the cord if they can watch tons of content without paying a hefty monthly cable bill? Bewkes says no.

I suggested Netflix was an 800 pound Gorilla — (more…)
