Dante Terrell Smith is more commonly known as Mos Def also known as Yasin Bey aka Black Dante aka Pretty Flaco aka Flaco Bey aka The Mighty Mos Def aka Bezé

Regarded as one of hip-hop’s most introspective and insightful artists, Mos Def has shaped a career that transcends music genres and artistic medium. A child of hip-hop’s Golden Era, the native Brooklynite spent his childhood imbedded in the culture surrounding him as well as absorbing knowledge from across the artistic spectrum.

With the release of “Universal Magnetic” (1996) Mos became an underground favorite in the hip hop world, leading to his legendary collaboration with Talib Kweli. The two formed Black Star whose debut album, Mos Def and Talib Kweli Are Black Star, would become one of the most critically acclaimed hip-hop albums. Mos followed that release with his 1999 solo debut, Black On Both Sides, which was certified gold and credited by critics as bringing hip-hop back to its soapbox roots.

As with his music, Mos has demonstrated insight and passion with his acting career, appearing in Spike Lee’s Bamboozled, MTV‘s Carmen: A Hip Hopera, 2002‘s critically acclaimed Monster’s Ball, Showtime, and the 2002 romantic comedy Brown Sugar, for which he received an NAACP Image Award nomination. In addition Mos has served as the host, music supervisor and co-executive producer for the HBO series Def Poetry and served as a writer, producer and actor on the MTV sketch comedy series Lyricist Lounge. Mos completed his Broadway debut in 2002 in the Tony nominated, Pulitzer Prize winning, Topdog/Underdog. Mos re-teamed with Topdog playwright, Suzan Lori Parks and director George Wolfe for the off-Broadway play, Fucking A, for which he was awarded an Obie Award.

In 2003, Mos Def starred in Paramount Pictures’ The Italian Job, alongside Ed Norton, Mark Wahlberg and Charlize Theron. Last year Mos Def starred opposite Alan Rickman in the critically acclaimed HBO movie Something the Lord Made, for which he has received a 2004 Emmy Nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor In A Miniseries Or A Movie. Def was also nominated for both a Golden Globe Award (Best Performance by an Actor in a Mini-Series or Motion Picture) and Golden Satellite Award (Best Actor in a Miniseries or a Motion Picture Made for Television) for the same role He can currently be been seen on the big screen in the feature film The Woodsman, with Kevin Bacon, Benjamin Bratt, Eve and Kyra Sedgwick. The New York Times said of his performance, “I hope we don’t have to wait too much longer to see him in a big-screen leading role,” and USA Today heralded him as “the movie’s best performance.” In addition, he recently completed work on Spyglass Entertainment’s The Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy, set for release in May 2005. In the film, an adaptation of the classic Douglas Adams Science Fiction novel, Def will star as hero “Ford Prefect.”

Mos Def released his highly-anticipated and critically acclaimed sophomore solo release, The New Danger (Geffen Records), on October 12th. The album was met with praise from both critics and fans alike, with Rolling Stone giving it 4 Stars and hailing the album as “Ghetto rock and righteous hip-hop from dazzingly talented Def” and the New York Daily News proclaimed “No one is doing more to change our notion of how hip hop can sound.” The first single, “Sex, Love and Money’ earned Def a 2005 Grammy nomination for Best Alternative/Urban Performance and the album has been certified gold by the RIAA.

UGK (short for Underground Kingz) was an American hip hop duo from Port Arthur, Texas formed in 1987 by the late Chad “Pimp C” Butler . He then joined with Bernard “Bun B” Freeman, who became his longtime partner. They released their first major label album, Too Hard to Swallow, in 1992, followed by several other albums charting on the Billboard 200 and Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums charts, including the self-titled Underground Kingz album which debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 in August 2007. The group has been featured on hit singles by other artists, such as on “Big Pimpin‘” by Jay-Z and “Sippin’ on Some Syrup” by Three 6 Mafia. Pimp C founded UGK Records in late 2005.

On December 4, 2007, Pimp C was found dead in a West Hollywood, California hotel room. Long live the Pimp!!

#IAmNotARapper Presents: #TheNine Interview Series w/Minister of Information JR POCC

by iSpit

News imageIntroduction: So, as promised we have more new segments to come from I Am Not A Rapper and, unlike the still as yet untitled podcast, this one has a title: #TheNine: Words & Numbers Have Power.  #TheNine is an interview series where we will ask 9 questions of whomever we are speaking with. Within those nine questions, you will be able to have a clear yet concise insight into the mind of the interviewed & possibly be left wanting more… in which case ( judging by your comments/emails) a part 2 will take place. Think of it as the transcribed version of the podcast. #TheNine has many meanings, each of which will be revealed little by little with every interview in the form of facts about the number 9. Enjoy!

Fact#1 – Nine (9) is the highest original number, all other numbers are composites (i.e. 10 = 1 & 0, 12 = 1 & 2, 11 = 1 & 1, etc.)

Special thanks go out to The Minister of Information JR for granting us this interview, shout out to POCC Block Report Radio & be sure to visit www.blockreportradio.com. Also CLICK THE PICTURE ABOVE TO PURCHASE A COPY OF J.R.’S BOOK “BLOCK REPORTIN

9 Facts About JR:

1. J.R. Is the author of 2 Books

2. J.R. is the creator & founder of Block Report Radio

3. J.R. created the documentary “Operation Small Axe”

4. J.R. is from Oakland California

5. J.R. was arrested & falsely accused of Arson during Oakland riots

6. J.R. is the associate editor for San Francisco Bay View newspaper

7. POCC stands for Prisoners of Conscience Committee

8. J.R. dove into journalism at San Francisco State as an eleventh grader

9. J. R. conducted the now infamous “Yusuf Bey IV Interview

1.Historically, stories pertaining to violent crimes involving white people get more attention than those pertaining to minorities (as was the case with Casey Anthony & Caylee), How do you feel about the role “new media” (twitter,YouTube,Facebook, Google, etc) plays in the way news is reported and how this can be swayed positively for minorities?

I think that “new media” represents more of a democracy in terms of people passing on what they think is interesting, instead of having corporate media cram the “story of the day” into their minds. The control of corporate media will be severely curtailed when we start creating, and distributing our own media more, instead of passing what they have created back and forth.

2. Since the brutal police beating of Askia Sabur in Philadelphia, police activity has been heightened in that area, how do you suggest residents combat this without also being beaten?

In my opinion, the community has to get pass being scared of ”also being beaten”. The slave-masters were able to keep the enslaved in check through fear. We should be more scared of not living in a just society than being simply scared all of the time. Police terrorism will stop or at least be curtailed when we put the message out there that we will do anything to stop the police from beating and killing us. We have to use our imagination in coming up with new ways to expose and stop the police terrorism that is going down in our communities.

3. Tell me a little bit about your role in the organizing of a usually divided Oakland in support of the Grant family & in protest of what had taken place?

The first thing that people have to remember about Oakland, is that Oakland is the birthplace of the Black Panther Party, so there is a certain type of spirit that dwells in the residents of Oakland. My role was a liason between the hood and other members of the campaign against police terrorism, as well as a reporter who helped to articulate and spread the politics and sentiments of the people who were rebelling against the police occupation, of our communities. And I want to make the correction that we were NOT organizing in support of Oscar Grant‘s family, we were organizing in defense of the community that the Grants are a part of. When the struggle starts to just be about a family, then it is easy to kill once that family is paid off or dealt with in some other kind of way.

4. Can there ever really be justice for the Oscar Grant family? Is any monetary compensation really enough?

The truth is that no one can bring Oscar Grant and the countless other victims of police terrorism back. The money is definitely not enough. Oscar’s daughter needs her father. The money can not talk to her, the way her father would have been able to.

5. Why was the overseer (officer) who killed Oscar Grant released after only serving 11 months prison time?

I want to make the correction that Oscar was killed by more than one officer, its just one who pulled the trigger and was convicted for it, there is a difference. The others held him down, and made sure that his friends were handcuffed. If the shoe was on the other foot, everybody who was with Oscar on the platform, if he killed a cop, would have been prosecuted. Ultimately the short amount of time that Mehserle served just reflects the gang mentality of the police in the U.S.. They could kill with impunity on camera, and he only got 11 months because of the millions of dollars in property that was destroyed in the number of rebellions in Oakland, that came about as a result of this case.

6. What was Oakland like the day the verdict was given out?

Tense. We knew that Mehserle was not going to be giving life, but I still think that most of the community hoped that this time, if only this once, the Black community will feel some form of vindication. We have soon come to realize collectively that the police don’t prosecute the police. NFL star Mike Vick spent more time in jail for (allegedly) killing dogs than Mehserle did for killing a Black man on camera.

7. How do you feel about the sentiment that black people need a new “black leader”? (as if we can’t be self-governed)

We need to become the leaders we want to see. Whites don’t have a leader, so why do Black people need one? We have to feel empowered to take the steps necessary to change our community in a constructive manner, it is our responsibility. We’ve had a number of leaders in the past who have shown us the way.

8. Who/what is your target demographic for BlockReportRadio?

The target demographic of Block Report Radio, is Black and Brown young people from ghettos, barrios, reservations, quilombos, shanty towns, and favelas around the world. The Block Report is the voice of the disenfranchised teaching and talking to the disenfranchised. It is named Block Report Radio because we are taking up the responsibility to educate our own communities around issues that are important to us.

9. What caused you to create BlockReportRadio?

The fact that there wasn’t anybody on the radio in the Bay speaking for ghetto people’s from our perspective, cause me to create Block Report Radio. The Black people that were on the radio that I came into contact with were always the careerist type, who cared nothing for the community. They only seemed to care about trying to kiss the ass of the boss, so they could get a raise. In my opinion they are like circus monkeys who do tricks for snacks. The Black community needed something, and still needs more shows, who can raise the intellect in our community. We attempted to fill that void in 2003, with the creation of BlockReportRadio.com.

I Am Not A Rapper x DJ Nastee Naj Presents: #ClassicFriday Vol. 8 – #ClassicRKelly

by iSpit

I mean come on, did you think we wouldn’t do R. Kelly? This dude literally put the R in R &B (Note: might not be true, got it from wikipedia). R. Kelly‘s career has been plagued by scandal from his marriage to a then underage Aaliyah, his child pornography case all the way down to the demise of the heralded and critically acclaimed “Best Of Both Worlds” project with Jay-Z. All in all, R. Kelly seems to continuously rise from the ashes.

R. Kelly has many sons in the r&b game (*sneeze* Trey Songz *sneeze*) and he has launched the career of many of your favorite artists. In the 90s, you may not have been able to tell the difference between him & Aaron Hall, but as time went on R. Kelly set himself far apart from the pack and has continued to do so. R. Kelly even made stepping cool for people under 40… kind of. I could say alot of nice things about R. Kelly… but thats what we have Google for.

So for those who are unfamiliar, get familiar. For those who are familiar, you’re too busy right now to be reading this.

I Am Not A Rapper x DJ Nastee Naj Presents: #ClassicFriday Vol. 7 – #ClassicHOV

by iSpit

This passed Sunday November 4th, Sean “Jay-Z” Carter turned 140 yrs old (…or something like that) so this week we decided to indut him into the #ClassicFriday hall of fame and honor him with a playlist of our favorite Jay-Z songs and features (which may not include all of your favorites as well). Say what you want about Jay-Z aka Jigga aka Hova aka Young Hova aka Young H-O aka Young aka Iceberg Slim aka Hova the god aka Jiggaman aka Jazzy  (as we have in the past on this site) but at 174 years old with being married to Beyonce’, being co-owner of the now “Brooklyn Nets,  40/40 club, being on the Forbes list, ousting Frank Sinatra (& Biggie??) as the reigning King of New York,  expecting a little Jay-Z (or Jayonce’??) soon, & all of the many things I left out that he is currently up to… Jay-Z is still #1 and you know it. Salute King.

Calvin Cordozar Broadus, Jr. (born October 20, 1971), better known by his stage name Snoop Dogg, is an American rapper, record producer, and actor. Snoop is best known as a rapper in the West Coast hip hop scene, and for being one of Dr. Dre’s most notable protégés. Snoop Dogg was a Crip gang member while in high school. Shortly after graduation, he was arrested for cocaine possession and spent six months in Wayside County Jail. His music career began in 1992 after his release when he was discovered by Dr. Dre. He collaborated on several tracks on Dre‘s solo debut, The Chronic and on the titular theme song to the film Deep Cover.

Snoop’s debut album Doggystyle, was released in 1993 under Death Row Records making a debut at No.1 on both the Billboard Hot 100 and R&B charts. Selling almost a million copies in the first week of its release, Doggystyle quickly became certified 4x platinum in 1994 and spawned several hit singles, including “What’s My Name” and “Gin & Juice“. In 994, Snoop released a soundtrack on Death Row Records for the short film Murder Was The Case, starring himself. In early 1996, Snoop Dogg was cleared of charges over his bodyguard’s 1993 murder of Philip Woldemariam. His second album, late 1996′s Tha Doggfather, also debuted at No.1 on both charts with “Snoop‘s Upside Ya Head” as the lead single. The album sold only half as well, being certified double platinum in 1997.

Tha Doggfather was his last release for Death Row before he signed with No Limit Records, where he recorded his next three albums. Da Game Is to Be Sold, Not to Be Told in 1998, No Limit Top Dogg in 1999 (making it his last album of the 90s), and Tha Last Meal in 2000, which was his last No Limit Records album. Snoop then signed with Priority/Capitol/EMI Records in 2002, where he released his album Paid tha Cost to Be da Boss. Then he signed with Geffen Records in 2004 for his next three albums R&G (Rhythm & Gangsta): The Masterpiece, Tha Blue Carpet Treatment, and Ego Trippin’. Malice ‘n Wonderland (2009) and Doggumentary (2011), his most recent release, were on Priority.

In addition to music, Snoop Dogg has starred in motion pictures and hosted several television shows: Doggy Fizzle Televizzle, Snoop Dogg’s Father Hood and Dogg After Dark. He also coaches a youth football league and high school football team. He has run into many legal troubles, some of which caused him to be legally banned from the UK and Australia, although the UK ban was later reversed after a long legal battle. He is the cousin of Nate Dogg, Daz Dillinger, RBX and Lil’ ½ Dead and the cousin of R&B singers Brandy and Ray J. Starting September 2009, Snoop was hired by EMI as the chairman of a reactivated Priority Records.
