Gee Roberson Named Chairman of Geffen Records

by iSpit

Gee Roberson — co-CEO of Hip-Hop Since 1978, the management firm that handles Kanye West, Lil Wayne, Drake, Nicki Minaj and others — has been named chairman of Geffen Records, a move that Billboard.Biz reported was in the works last week. He will report to Interscope Geffen A&M chairman Jimmy Iovine.

Based in New York, Roberson will oversee the creative direction and operations of Geffen Records, with a special focus on discovering and nurturing new artists. He will also be charged with expanding the reach of the label into numerous areas, including digital direct-to-consumer, merchandising, touring and management, according to a press release.

“Gee has a unique combination of talents that the music industry really needs running a record company today,” Iovine said in a statement.

Roberson began his music industry career under the tutelage of Jay-Z at Roc-A-Fella Records, where he rose to senior VP of A&R. He later moved to Atlantic Records as senior VP of A&R, heading up the label’s urban music division.

It was unclear at press time whether Roberson will continue in his role at Hip Hop since 1978.

‘Hip Hop: A Cultural Odyssey’ book, Grammy Museum Exhibit Celebrate The Musical Movement

by iSpit

Decades before Jay-Z, Nicki Minaj, Eminem or Lil Wayne made names for themselves in mainstream hip-hop, Afrika Bambaataa, Grandmaster Flash and Kool Herc introduced the movement to the first adopters, who spread the genre to the masses via not only music, but dancing, art and DJing.

That rich history of hip-hop culture, dating back to the days of b-boys and b-girls breaking on streets, DJs scratching turntables, MCs battling each other on corners and graffiti writers tagging wherever and whenever, is explored in a new coffee-table book and accompanying Grammy Museum exhibit, which opens Tuesday.

“Hip-Hop: A Cultural Odyssey” is a massive, sprawling 420 page opus that includes exclusive photos and interviews with the pioneers, trendsetters and icons of the genre and provides an exhaustive account on the birth, evolution and global ripple effect hip-hop has had over the last four decades.“There was a realization that there was a huge void in the market for a book like this,” said Jordan Sommers, editor of the book and president of ARIA Multimedia Entertainment, the book’s publisher. “Coffee table books are usually associated with iconic subjects, culturally (more…)

BANNED!!: Byron Crawford’s XXL Article On Odd Future (Uncensored)

by iSpit

Note: If you’re unfamiliar with Odd Future (and you wouldnt necessarily be in the minority) then below is a video of them performing their breakout single “Sandwiches” on Jimmy Fallon and a twitter rant from the group’s “leader” Tyler, The Creator. Enjoy…

What if a group came along that was obviously a black variation on Insane Clown Posse, but no one seemed to notice or give a shit, because they were black, and because no one (who has a computer) knows enough about juggalos to say for certain whether or not someone actually is a juggalo, and because they’ve been championed by people who see themselves as being above listening to juggalo music. It looks like this is what’s happening with Odd Future.

Odd Future has been the talk of the hip-hop Internets for the past couple of weeks, especially amongst people who are constantly trying to figure out the next big thing and attach themselves to it, regardless of what it is. No shots at the late, great Combat Jack. Oddly enough (no pun intended), they didn’t merit inclusion on the cover of this year’s Freshmen Issue, the hilarious cover of which was revealed yesterday, even though it’s a well known fact that Odd Future is secretly signed to Interscope, one of the main

Lil’ Kim – Ladies Night Feat Missy Elliot, Angie Martinez & Left Eye

Nicki Minaj – Warning

Foxy Brown’s – Foxy’s Bells

Jean Grae – Uh-Oh (1st Verse)

I know the Lil’ Kim-Foxy Brown-Nicki Minaj “beef” (yes, I use that
word very loosely) is getting as old as “thugs” dressed in skinny
jeans tucked in Uggs, but let’s have a serious dialogue about this. As
long as Lil’ Kim keeps walking around in I.R.S. shirts and
hats—“international rockstars,” not the folks who took all her worldly
possessions a few years back, and Nicki Minaj continues to eerily be
reminiscent of the ‘95 Kim, this is going to continue to be on our
minds… Oh, and no Foxy is pretty irrelevant in the grand scheme of
things. To discuss her in any aspect beyond the $100,00 she’s
currently being sued for would be the equivalent of trying to debate
if Foxy Brown could even hear her own diss record—just impractical.
Same goes for Jacki-O who has decided to join the melee, firing
paintballs (because “Bang, Bang” is nowhere near silver bullet-type (more…)

Go Old Head: Foxy Brown – The Massacre (Nicki Minaj/Lil Kim Diss)

by iSpit

I had to do Foxy justice by posting a picture from when she actually looked like something seeing as how this will most likely be the last time I post any of her music until I’m doing a tribute to her like Teena Marie

I wont go in on her right now, shes been thru enough (ad nauseum) But, since she used a Jay-Z beat Iwill use a Jay-Z quote

“…N*gga ya whole career is an accident…who’s gassin em? f*ck outta here” – Jay-Z

Foxy Brown – Masssacre
