Love & Basketball (Full Movie)

by iSpit

In 1981 in L.A., Monica moves in next door to Quincy. They’re 11, and both want to play in the NBA, just like Quincy’s dad. Their love-hate relationship lasts into high school, with Monica‘s edge and Quincy’s top-dog attitude separating them, except when Quincy’s parents argue and he climbs through Monica‘s window to sleep on the floor. As high school ends, they come together as a couple, but within a year, with both of them playing ball at USC, Quincy’s relationship with his father takes an ugly turn, and it leads to a break up with Monica. Some years later, their pro careers at a crossroads, they meet again. It’s time for a final game of one-on-one with high stakes.

Haiti Earthquake: Children Sold By Traffickers For As Little as 76 pence Each ($1.20)

by iSpit

Children in Haiti are being sold for as little as 76 pence each (pennies) by traffickers taking advantage of the chaos from last year’s earthquake, new figures from Unicef show.

Some youngsters are ending up in the care of well meaning but ignorant European families, while others are being forced into prostitution.
People posing as NGO officials, pretending to be relatives or unscrupulous Haitians from abroad are targeting tens of thousands of children living in the temporary camps.
The Daily Telegraph gained exclusive access to film the work being carried out by Unicef to try and tackle the problem.
The charity is funding the Brigade de Protection des Mineurs (BPM) – working in conjunction with the police – which monitors the camps and Haitian borders to pinpoint vulnerable children.
More than a million people were displaced by last January’s devastating quake and 76 per cent of the population now lives on less than £1.50 a day.Parents desperate for money are tricked into believing their children will lead better lives elsewhere.

Melissa Nau, a 38-year-old mother of five who suffers from learning and physical disabilities, sold four of her children for 50 Haitian gourdes (76 pence or $1.20) each.
Unable to work, she was living in the Tabarissa camp in Port au Prince when a man she (more…)

Jay Electronica’s Interview w/Elliott Wilson (RESPECT Magazine)

by iSpit

Do This My Way
NOLA’s Jay Electronica wants to be successful. But on his own terms. And, in his most candid interview to date, in his own words.
As Told To Elliott Wilson

By the time you read this: Jay Electronica may have, at long last, landed a record deal. Or not. It’s hard to predict the future of the enigmatic MC who electrified the rap world from the end of ’09 to early 2010 with a song called “Exhibit C.” Produced by Just Blaze, who broke the record while guest-hosting Tony Touch’s Shade 45 Sirius show, the soulful sonic boom ushered in the rise of this NOLA brother with the Nas flow—captivatingly complex lyrics and vivid storytelling.

After being wooed by the record industry’s biggest execs for a year Elect is still, at press time, a free agent. But recent dealings with Mr. Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter may be changing that. In his modest Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn apartment, the man born Timothy Thedford spoke for over three hours about his almost Forrest Gump-like journey through this thing called life. Aiming to do justice to his jam-packed existence, RESPECT. hosts Electronica unfiltered. Here’s a toast to a true original.

“My light is brilliant.”

“Exhibit C” magnified everything. Everybody was coming at one time. I’m the kind of person where if I get to a point where I can’t make this decision then I’m gonna stand still. I don’t care. I’ll stand still for two years, 20 years. I’m 34 years old. I’m still learning myself, but I know myself a little bit, so I stand still. People was telling me, “Oh, you buggin’, this is the time.”

By the time March [2010] came, it was crazy. I coulda signed any kinda deal at that time. I coulda took these publishing companies to the cleaners. I met anybody you can think of. Like, I’m gonna entertain what you sayin’, but we already have a fundamental disagreement in the way that we view the music business and the treatment of people, period. I need to feel like I’m talking to my grandmother. I need to feel like I’m talking to my sister or my mama to feel comfortable. If I’m not at that comfort level then I’m completely uncomfortable.

Diplo Readies Reggae Compilation Album

by iSpit

Here’s an inspired idea: A label with a vault full of classics teams up with a superstar DJ who knows just how these songs work and what to do with them. XLR8R reports that the reggae giant VP will release Riddimentary: Diplo Selects Greensleeves, a compilation curated and blended by Diplo. According to XLR8R, it will be released on February 8.

Greensleeves, a reggae label that’s released an insane number of great tracks over the past few decades, always evolving to keep pace with an ever-changing genre. (This 2007 label best-of works as a pocket history of the last 30 or so years of reggae.) On Riddimentary, Diplo raids the label’s back catalog, mixing tracks from artists like Gregory Isaacs, Barrington Levy, Prince Jammy, and Eek-A-Mouse.

Check out the tracklist below.

Haitians cancel Carnival celebration

by iSpit

Ernst Beauvais, Relax Band coordinator, sits on a neighborhood stage in Port-au-Prince that now houses a water bladder tank.

Port-au-Prince, Haiti (CNN) — In the central plaza, there was once an orgy of music, street dancing and revelry unmatched by any other nation in the Americas, Haitians say.

But where there was joy now sits a vast settlement of people left without loved ones, without homes, without life’s belongings.

Haitians have celebrated Carnival through dictatorships, military coups and bloodshed. Popular belief was that if a government failed to deliver on Carnival, Haiti’s equivalent of Mardi Gras, it was sure to fall, said Marie Laurence Lassegue, Haiti’s minister of culture and information.

But this year, the three-day festival has been canceled, another indication of the enormity of the earthquake‘s devastation.

Musicians fell silent, seamstresses stopped sewing costumes and ghostly skeletons of unfinished floats lay scattered on the outskirts of Port-au-Prince. A month after the devastating January 12 earthquake, the Champs de Mars plaza is home to the capital’s displaced, where thousands of people have eked out a tiny space in which to survive.
