Jay Electronica’s Interview w/Elliott Wilson (RESPECT Magazine)

by iSpit

Do This My Way
NOLA’s Jay Electronica wants to be successful. But on his own terms. And, in his most candid interview to date, in his own words.
As Told To Elliott Wilson

By the time you read this: Jay Electronica may have, at long last, landed a record deal. Or not. It’s hard to predict the future of the enigmatic MC who electrified the rap world from the end of ’09 to early 2010 with a song called “Exhibit C.” Produced by Just Blaze, who broke the record while guest-hosting Tony Touch’s Shade 45 Sirius show, the soulful sonic boom ushered in the rise of this NOLA brother with the Nas flow—captivatingly complex lyrics and vivid storytelling.

After being wooed by the record industry’s biggest execs for a year Elect is still, at press time, a free agent. But recent dealings with Mr. Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter may be changing that. In his modest Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn apartment, the man born Timothy Thedford spoke for over three hours about his almost Forrest Gump-like journey through this thing called life. Aiming to do justice to his jam-packed existence, RESPECT. hosts Electronica unfiltered. Here’s a toast to a true original.

“My light is brilliant.”

“Exhibit C” magnified everything. Everybody was coming at one time. I’m the kind of person where if I get to a point where I can’t make this decision then I’m gonna stand still. I don’t care. I’ll stand still for two years, 20 years. I’m 34 years old. I’m still learning myself, but I know myself a little bit, so I stand still. People was telling me, “Oh, you buggin’, this is the time.”

By the time March [2010] came, it was crazy. I coulda signed any kinda deal at that time. I coulda took these publishing companies to the cleaners. I met anybody you can think of. Like, I’m gonna entertain what you sayin’, but we already have a fundamental disagreement in the way that we view the music business and the treatment of people, period. I need to feel like I’m talking to my grandmother. I need to feel like I’m talking to my sister or my mama to feel comfortable. If I’m not at that comfort level then I’m completely uncomfortable.

Shout out to the homie!

Moments ago, Jay-Z announced during his secret show at The Box, that Jay Electronica is the latest addition to Roc Nation.

Jay-Z made the announcement at a secret show held at NYC hotspot The Box on Friday (November 12), which was also attended by his wife Beyonce and R&B artist Omarion.

“He’s an official Roc Nation signee,” Jay-Z yelled as he did his introduction. “Make some noise!!!”

Jay Electronica (real name Timothy Elpadaro Thedford), 34, is best known for his critically-acclaimed track “Exhibit C,” which was released in late 2009.

He also welcomed a daughter early last year with singer Erykah Badu. The two tweeted about the birth in real-time!

KarenCivil.com: J.Cole – In My Own Words

by iSpit

Karen finally caught up with a nigga. I was supposed to write this three months ago, but I’ve been so busy. Let me give you an example of how my day has been:

-I had to go to the studio on Thursday, so I got there around 5
-I get home around 5 in the morning
-Then I had to catch a 9 a.m. flight only to have a show in Georgia at 11 p.m. which ended at 1:30.
-So I  drive back to Atlanta. Get to the A at 3:30 to catch at 6 a.m. flight to Upstate N.Y.
-I then ride to Long Island and do a show there.

That’s the type of schedule it is right now. The type of chaos I’m pretty much going through, which, please don’t mistake me, I’m forever grateful for all of it. But it is somewhat overwhelming when you go from a nigga that was doing beats in his bedroom, to try and write songs and you kind of looking for things to do. It’s hectic but its all for the best and all of this work is going to lead to something that will pay off in the end.

J. Cole Says Drake Compared Him To Nas ‘Too Early’

by iSpit

J. Cole

Last week when upstart rapper J. Cole stepped onstage at New York’s S.O.B.’s, he was welcomed by a packed house. Among those in the audience were fellow MCs Talib Kweli and Asher Roth.

There were even whispers throughout the crowd that the attendance at the event, Hot 97′s Who’s Next series, surpassed the number of people who came out last May to witness Drake’s coming-out party during his headlining spin at the same showcase.

Although Cole, who was signed to Roc Nation by Jay-Z, and Drake have different styles, lately the two artists have been compared to one another with increasing regularity. Drake himself, in an interview in the February/March issue of Complex magazine, called Cole his favorite rapper right now. He compared the North Carolina native to Nas, while claiming he might be the new Jay-Z.
