CONTEST: JANUARY 19TH – IDLE WARSHIP @ WORLD CAFE LIVE

by iSpit

Ok So as promised we’re giving away 2 tickets to see Idle Warship @WorldCafeLive this Thursday January 19th…for free. All the lucky party who wants & has the knowledge (read as: does the googling) to go has to do is… answer these 3 questions.

1. When & by whom was Idle Warship created?

2.  What Talib Kweli project is this lyric from? Who else is featured on the project?

A black and blue emcees, actin’ new to me, get smacked stupidly
That lack skills, like the black community lack unity
Still my rhymes heard like Ali De Phrase
Step off the stage to shouts of Kweli boomayyay”

3. Name all of members of  #PodcastWednesdays

Comment, email answers to: iamnotarapper58@gmail.com ,tweet them to @iamnotarapper58 or Mobile

CONTEST ENDS AT 3:33 PM EASTERN ON January 16th, 2012

Idle Warship is a perfect example of how a whole can become greater than the sum of its parts – and that is saying quite a lot given the musical components of this project. A collaboration between longtime friends and collaborators, hip-hop luminary Talib Kweli and critically acclaimed soulful singer and songwriter Res, Idle Warship was born out of sheer experimentation in the studio. But some of the best things in life happen when least expected. When fans of Talib and Res heard and reacted to some online MP3s of what these two had created during their off-the-cuff sessions, it became clear that that something much bigger was brewing. Since making a huge splash at SXSW in 2009 and completing a successful European tour, Idle Warship made Party Robot – their mixtape with master DJ Mick Boogie and singer/songwriter Graph Nobel – available for free download in 2010. It only left the fans craving more, and now the wait is over!

Dante Terrell Smith is more commonly known as Mos Def also known as Yasin Bey aka Black Dante aka Pretty Flaco aka Flaco Bey aka The Mighty Mos Def aka Bezé

Regarded as one of hip-hop’s most introspective and insightful artists, Mos Def has shaped a career that transcends music genres and artistic medium. A child of hip-hop’s Golden Era, the native Brooklynite spent his childhood imbedded in the culture surrounding him as well as absorbing knowledge from across the artistic spectrum.

With the release of “Universal Magnetic” (1996) Mos became an underground favorite in the hip hop world, leading to his legendary collaboration with Talib Kweli. The two formed Black Star whose debut album, Mos Def and Talib Kweli Are Black Star, would become one of the most critically acclaimed hip-hop albums. Mos followed that release with his 1999 solo debut, Black On Both Sides, which was certified gold and credited by critics as bringing hip-hop back to its soapbox roots.

As with his music, Mos has demonstrated insight and passion with his acting career, appearing in Spike Lee’s Bamboozled, MTV‘s Carmen: A Hip Hopera, 2002‘s critically acclaimed Monster’s Ball, Showtime, and the 2002 romantic comedy Brown Sugar, for which he received an NAACP Image Award nomination. In addition Mos has served as the host, music supervisor and co-executive producer for the HBO series Def Poetry and served as a writer, producer and actor on the MTV sketch comedy series Lyricist Lounge. Mos completed his Broadway debut in 2002 in the Tony nominated, Pulitzer Prize winning, Topdog/Underdog. Mos re-teamed with Topdog playwright, Suzan Lori Parks and director George Wolfe for the off-Broadway play, Fucking A, for which he was awarded an Obie Award.

In 2003, Mos Def starred in Paramount Pictures’ The Italian Job, alongside Ed Norton, Mark Wahlberg and Charlize Theron. Last year Mos Def starred opposite Alan Rickman in the critically acclaimed HBO movie Something the Lord Made, for which he has received a 2004 Emmy Nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor In A Miniseries Or A Movie. Def was also nominated for both a Golden Globe Award (Best Performance by an Actor in a Mini-Series or Motion Picture) and Golden Satellite Award (Best Actor in a Miniseries or a Motion Picture Made for Television) for the same role He can currently be been seen on the big screen in the feature film The Woodsman, with Kevin Bacon, Benjamin Bratt, Eve and Kyra Sedgwick. The New York Times said of his performance, “I hope we don’t have to wait too much longer to see him in a big-screen leading role,” and USA Today heralded him as “the movie’s best performance.” In addition, he recently completed work on Spyglass Entertainment’s The Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy, set for release in May 2005. In the film, an adaptation of the classic Douglas Adams Science Fiction novel, Def will star as hero “Ford Prefect.”

Mos Def released his highly-anticipated and critically acclaimed sophomore solo release, The New Danger (Geffen Records), on October 12th. The album was met with praise from both critics and fans alike, with Rolling Stone giving it 4 Stars and hailing the album as “Ghetto rock and righteous hip-hop from dazzingly talented Def” and the New York Daily News proclaimed “No one is doing more to change our notion of how hip hop can sound.” The first single, “Sex, Love and Money’ earned Def a 2005 Grammy nomination for Best Alternative/Urban Performance and the album has been certified gold by the RIAA.

Talib Kweli Visits Turntable.fm, Gets First Verified Account & Own Avatar

by iSpit

Hip-hop artist Talib Kweli was one of the first musicians to get into Turntable.fm, the still-in-beta service that lets users spin tunes in avatar-filled chatrooms. Now he has his very own avatar — and Turntable’s first verified account.

Turntable.fm posted a video of Kweli at the startup’s office, as well as pictures of his cap-wearing avatar.

We can see more musicians getting their own avatars; the site is becoming an increasingly popular venue in which to premiere tracks. (Paste magazine has been partnering with musicians to drop albums, and Ra Ra Riot’s Mathieu Santos showcased his solo project on the site, to name a few converts.) Lady Gaga and Kanye West are also rumored to have invested in TT.fm.

A few weeks ago, the coveted Deadmau5 avatar was removed from the site with the message: “Deadmau5 avatar has been reserved for the actual deadmau5. So instead, may we present our awesome monkey couple.” Perhaps now Joel Zimmerman — the man inside the Deadmau5 head — will visit HQ to score his very own verified account? We certainly hope so.

10 Delayed Hip Hop Albums And If They Were Worth The Wait

by iSpit

It’s been a long time coming, but, Saigon‘s The Greatest Story Never Told finally saw the light of day. Years after burning up New York’s mixtape scene with songs like “Stocking Cap,” executing the power move of a lifetime with a role on HBO’s hit series Entourage playing himself, and getting a Jay-Z-assisted single, his Just Blaze-helmed debut album is finally out of Atlantic Records attics and into the hands of consumers. But Sai-giddy is only the latest in a long list of artists whose projects have been shelved for months or years before hitting stores. And with delays currently hindering releases by Young Jeezy, The Game and Nas, he won’t be the last. Look below for how the likes of Cam’ron, Big Boi, Royce Da 5’9” and others fared with album delays.

1.) Cam’ron, Purple Haze

Scheduled Release: November 2003

Cam’ron was on a roll at his new home of Roc-A-Fella Records. His label debut Come Home With Me went multiplatinum and had Grammy-nominated singles like “Hey Ma” and “Oh Boy,” and his Diplomats crew dropped a hood classic with the double-disc Diplomatic Immunity. Unfortunately, Purple Haze was pushed back several times until its final release date a year later.

Actual Release: December 7, 2004

Even though it didn’t have the sales of its predecessor, Purple Haze still reached Gold status from singles like the Kanye West-helmed banger “Down & Out” and Cam’s new steez of wearing pink. The album received generally positive reviews as well. But Cam requested his release papers from the Roc after being dissatisfied with the push the album got from the label, and he hasn’t achieved higher sales or accolades for any solo albums since then. Mixtapes like Public Enemy No. 1 and a few highlights from Killa Season and Crime Pays only provide a glimpse of the standards that the former Children of the Corn member built with albums like Purple Haze.

The Introduction To Black History Month By: Eric Blair

by Mr. Blair

Kanye West Feat Talib Kweli & Consquence – My Chain Heavy

Well hello everybody!

This week’s blog will be very brief; more like an introduction to what’s to come for Black History Month. I am excited to showcase famous African Americans or Black people throughout history each day of the month of February. The people I have chosen to showcase have helped to change the world for the better. I feel like Black History Month isn’t celebrated the way it should. Honestly, I am proud to be Black; free and able to do the things our predecessors fought so hard for. Look at all the obstacles our people have been through; slavery, emancipation, lynching, Jim Crow, segregation, Civil Rights Movement, the Aids epidemic, etc. No matter how many obstacles presented to our people, we strive to be the best and better ourselves. We were told we’re nothing but monkeys and coons. Look at Black people now; we’re some of the greatest pioneers in the world today. We have come so far. We built America with our (more…)
