U.S. Government Denies Entry Visa To Afghan Women’s Rights Activist and Author Malalai Joya

by iSpit

The United States has denied a travel visa to Malalai Joya, an acclaimed women’s rights activist and former member of Afghanistan’s parliament. Ms. Joya, who was named one of TIME Magazine’s 100 most influential people in the world in 2010, was set to begin a three week U.S. tour to promote an updated edition of her memoir, A Woman Among Warlords, published by Scribner, an imprint of Simon & Schuster.

Joya’s publisher at Scribner, Alexis Gargagliano, said, “We had the privilege to publish Ms. Joya, and her earlier 2009 book tour met with wide acclaim. The right of authors to travel and promote their work is central to freedom of expression and the full exchange of ideas.” Joya’s memoir has been translated into over a dozen languages, and she has toured widely including Australia, the U.K., Canada, Norway, Germany, Italy, Spain, Portugal, France, and the Netherlands in support of the book over (more…)

Jail Sentences For U.K. Pirates

by iSpit

U.K. music bodies the BPI and PPL are hailing the success of a joint legal action which has resulted in prison sentences for the father and son team behind a operation selling pirated music to clubs in north-east England.

Labels body the BPI and neighboring rights collecting society PPL claimed that the pair, aided by a third defendant, had incorporated PPL licence fees into their customer quotations but made no payments, defrauding PPL of approximately £550,000 between 2003 and 2009. PPL collects performance right license fees on behalf of U.K. labels and performers.

The sentencing took place in Newcastle Crown Court yesterday (July 8). All three were charged with breaches of the Copyright Designs and Patents Act 1988 and found guilty of distributing music systems containing pirated and unlicensed music to pubs and clubs across the north-east of England.

During the course of the case, Malcolm Wylie, 59, of Gateshead, admitted one count of distributing infringing copyright work between May 2003 and January 2009. He was sentenced to three years in prison and banned from taking any position as a company director for 10 years.

How To Create An $850M Fad, Like Bebo Did

by iSpit

Editor’s Note: Pete Cashmore is founder and CEO of Mashable, a popular blog about social media. He writes a weekly column about social networking and technology for CNN.com.

Do you remember Bebo? AOL bought the hot social networking Web site for $850 million in 2008. This week, the company threw in the towel — Bebo will either be sold or shut down in 2010, according to an internal memo.

How did Bebo devolve from an $850 million sale to a dud in two years? And how do we tell whether the Web startup du jour is a long-term bet or a passing fad?

The fall of Bebo and MySpace

Bebo was once a real contender — it rose to become the United Kingdom’s biggest social network in 2007, according to comScore. Following News Corp.’s $580 million acquisition of MySpace in 2005, leading Web companies were desperate to have a stake in the social networking game, and multiple suitors were said to be appraising the site. In May 2007, it was rumored that Yahoo may acquire Bebo for $1 billion — but it was AOL that scooped up the service the following year.

MySpace too turned out to be a bad bet: It has long since conceded the social networking crown to Facebook, and continues to be an albatross for News Corp.
