Decoded DNA Reveals Details Of Black Death Germ

by iSpit

Scientists have used DNA lurking inside the teeth of medieval Black Death victims to figure out the entire genetic code of the deadly bacterium that swept across Europe more than 600 years ago, killing an estimated half of the population.

The researchers didn’t find any genetic feature that could explain why the plague was so virulent, according to a report just published in the journal Nature.

“There is no smoking gun, so to speak, to say, ‘Aha, we’ve found the one mutation which caused this tremendous virulence and now we know why it killed 50 million people.’ We don’t see that,” says biological anthropologist Hendrik Poinar of McMaster University in Hamilton, Canada, who was on the research team.

He says the most likely explanation for the plague’s devastation is that this rodent-infecting bacterium changed and struck humans for the first time right when the population of Europe was dealing with a cooling climate, poor crop production and filthy, crowded conditions.

Plus, people back then had no access to modern antibiotics and were likely weakened by other infections as well.

Poinar says the ancient Black Death DNA looks so similar to Yersinia pestis that still infects people today that researchers believe the medieval strain must be the ancestor of all modern strains.

That suggests this particular disease probably wasn’t around centuries earlier and couldn’t have caused the Plague of Justinian, another famous epidemic that devastated the Eastern Roman Empire in 541-542.

“More likely is that it was caused by another pathogen altogether that we haven’t really considered yet,” says Poinar.

In the past, other research groups have produced conflicting results when they’ve tried to detect Black Death bacteria in skeletal remains using less sensitive genetic tools. Some experts have argued that the famous plague might have been caused by a different disease, such as an Ebola-like virus.

This study used a newer, more robust genetic technique to fish out small bits of the ancient DNA from the dried powdery pulp hidden inside teeth taken from a Black Death cemetery in London.

“This is really the first ancient complete genome from skeletonized remains,” says Poinar, who notes that scientists have sequenced the genes of the deadly 1918 flu virus, but that was from preserved tissue samples.

The Natural History Museum of Denmark’s Thomas Gilbert is one of the scientists who tried to find plague DNA in Black Death victims in the past without success. He says the new technique used in this study is exciting and the analysis is compelling. “It’s a great result. It looks very, very convincing,” Gilbert says. “There’s no reason why the data shouldn’t be real.”

But even if this has firmly established that plague bacteria caused the Black Death, Gilbert thinks the calculations that rule out its presence during the Justinian plague are open to question.

“I’m not completely convinced by that,” says Gilbert. “The only way to find out what caused the Justinian plague is to do the same analysis on the Justinian samples, and I guess that’s going to be the next attempt.”

He says other groups have been working to use this same technique to probe for other diseases of historical interest. “What was unique about this paper is that they basically finished first and they did it on plague,” says Gilbert. “But I know for example, people are doing it on tuberculosis, and people are doing it on all sorts of other things.”

He says the insights that come from these studies will be of interest not only from a historical perspective, but also to help scientists understand how deadly epidemics have emerged in the past so that they can get ready for what might come in the future.

Facebook Porn and Gore Exploit Spiraling Out Of Control

by iSpit

For the past few days an exploit has been hijacking Facebook users accounts and posting explicit gore and pornography to users’ timelines.

Facebook users’ outrage is mounting toward the social network for an exploit that is currently turning unsuspecting users’ newsfeeds into unstoppable torrents of hardcore pornography and gory, violent pictures.

UPDATE: Facebook now claims to have closed its browser exploit and cleaned up the spam. Facebook had confirmed the problemNovember 15th and assented that the gore-porn-linkspam exploit is a coordinated attack and their engineers were “working on the self-XSS vulnerability in the browser.” If your account has been compromised try this tutorial to fix it. /Update

It started a few days ago, and right now is becoming an out of control exploit that has users angry and disgusted, while seemingly mocking Facebook’s notorious conservative content controls.

Earlier today the Christian Post published an outraged and disgusted item saying that Facebook had become a pit for violent and pornographic photos – and as it turns out, they were among the first to detail an exploit that is turning Facebook into the graphic horror of 4Chan/b.

A linkspam virus with the usual bait – Kim Kardashian, etc. – is luring users into clicking media-rich links, now more available thanks to Facebook’s recent timeline upgrades. Once clicked, their feeds become vectors for images containing hardcore sex, extreme violence, gore and death.

Many people are pointing fingers at Anonymous, but no claim has been made for the attack.

Anon is more than a whipping post for this one; a while back Anonymous announced intentions to take Facebook out for a variety of reasons, with a November 5 attack of some kind in the works, and rumors of a “Guy Fawkes virus” – none of which have been confirmed via usual routes (such as Anon press releases).

No matter who is behind it, the Facebook attack is extreme, and spiraling out of control.

On Twitter, Facebook users are venting no small amount of disgust – not necessarily at the porn, but most certainly at the bashed-in heads of corpses, photos of dead babies and animals, and yes, the overlarge penises and graphic scenes of penetration that have flooded streams.

The style of images is very much along the lines of 4Chan/b, which is where the genesis of Anonymous occurred.

For many it is too much, and users are avoiding the site and facing down the chore of deactivating their accounts to prevent assaulting friends, family and coworkers with unwanted imagery.

According to realtime search on Twitter, the Christian Post and now Gawker, the gore-porn virus has been gathering steam for the past few days.

Having your feed hijacked with gross stuff is no walk in the park, though some of us are less troubled by adult imagery than others. Facebook itself is known for being far more prudish than most of its users. That’s worth nothing when looking at the overall attack.

Meaning, while I tire of Facebook’s hypocrisies around adult content, it is quite a comment to see an exploit enacted with a bizarrely clever slap at the one thing Facebook is such an extreme hypocrite about.

The content of the imagery in its context was obviously well considered. In this, if intentional, this seems to me a much more direct attack on Facebook – the company – rather than an attack on its users.

So if you see your boss, your granny, or Sarah Palin posting hardcore porn or dead kittens on Facebook – you can blame it on the exploit. For now.

Food For Life: The Pros & Cons Of Onions (This May Save Your Life)

by iSpit

In 1919 when the flu killed 40 million people there was this Doctor that
visited the many farmers to see if he could help them combat the flu.
Many of the farmers and their family had contracted it and many died.

The doctor came upon this one farmer and to his surprise, everyone was very
healthy. When the doctor asked what the farmer was doing that was different
the wife replied that she had placed an unpeeled onion in a dish in the
rooms of the home, (probably only two rooms back then). The doctor couldn’t
believe it and asked if he could have one of the onions and place it under
the microscope. She gave him one and when he did this, he did find the flu
virus in the onion. It obviously absorbed the bacteria, therefore, keeping
the family healthy.
Now, I heard this story from my hairdresser in AZ. She said that several
years ago many of her employees were coming down with the flu and so were
many of her customers. The next year she placed several bowls with onions
around in her shop. To her surprise, none of her staff got sick. It must
work..  Try it and see what happens. We did it last year and we never got the flu.

Now there is a P. S. to this for I sent it to a friend in Oregon.  She replied with this
most interesting experience about onions:

Thanks for the reminder. I don’t know about the farmers story.. but, I do
know that I contacted pneumonia and needless to say I was very ill.. I came
across an article that said to cut both ends off an onion put it into an
empty jar…placing the jar next to the sick patient at night. It said the
onion would be black in the morning from the germs.. sure enough it happened
just like that.. the onion was a mess and I began to feel better.

Another thing I read in the article was that onions and garlic placed around
the room saved many from the black plague years ago. They have powerful
antibacterial, antiseptic properties.

This is the other note.

Vegetables - Raw (Onions) #8 Onion Saver (Keeps fresh)

Lots of times when we have stomach problems we don’t know what to blame.
Maybe it’s the onions that are to blame. Onions absorb bacteria is the
reason they are so good at preventing us from getting colds and flu‘s and is
the very reason we shouldn’t eat an onion that has been sitting for a time
after it has been cut open.

LEFT OVER ONIONS ARE POISONOUS!!!!!!!

Vegetables - Raw (Onions) #8 Onion Saver (Keeps fresh)

I had the wonderful privilege of touring Mullins Food Products, Makers of
mayonnaise.. Mullins is huge, and is owned by 11 brothers and sisters in the
Mullins family. My friend, Jeanne, is the CEO.

Questions about food poisoning came up, and I wanted to share what I learned
from a chemist.  Ed is a chemistry expert and is involved in developing most of the sauce formula.
He’s even developed sauce formula for McDonald’s.

Keep in mind that Ed is a food chemistry whiz. During the tour, someone
asked if we really needed to worry about mayonnaise. People are always
worried that mayonnaise will spoil. Ed’s answer will surprise you. Ed said
that all commercially- made Mayo is completely safe.

“It doesn’t even have to be refrigerated. No harm in refrigerating it, but
it’s not really necessary.” He explained that the pH in mayonnaise is set at
a point that bacteria could not survive in that environment. He then talked
about the quaint essential picnic, with the bowl of potato salad sitting on
the table and how everyone blames the mayonnaise when someone gets sick.

Ed says that! when food poisoning is reported, the first thing the officials
look for is when the ‘victim’ last ate ONIONS and where those onions came
from (in the potato salad?). Ed says it’s not the mayonnaise (as long as
it’s not homemade Mayo) that spoils in the outdoors. It’s probably the
onions, and if not the onions, it’s the POTATOES.

He explained, onions are a huge magnet for bacteria, especially uncooked
onions. You should never plan to keep a portion of a sliced onion.. He says
it’s not even safe if you put it in a zip-lock bag and put it in your
refrigerator.

It’s already contaminated enough just by being cut open and out for a bit,
that it can be a danger to you (and doubly watch out for those onions you
put in your hotdogs at the baseball park!) Ed says if you take the leftover onion and cook it like crazy you’! all probably be okay, but if you slice that leftover onion and put on your sandwich, you’re asking for trouble. Both the onions and the moist potato in a potato salad, will attract and grow bacteria faster than any commercial mayonnaise will even begin to break down.

Also, dogs should never eat onions. Their stomachs cannot metabolize onions.

Please remember it is dangerous to cut an onion and try to use it to cook
the next day, it becomes highly poisonous for even a single night and
creates toxic bacteria which may cause adverse stomach infections because of excess bile secretions and even food poisoning.

Hepatitis C: A Viral Time Bomb

by iSpit

It is a fitting message for the day—the reality is viral hepatitis does, in fact, affect everyone, everywhere.  Consider, for instance, that three percent of the world’s population is infected with the hepatitis C virus, a leading cause of liver disease. That’s 130 to 170 million people chronically infected globally. In the United States alone, as many as 3.9 million Americans are living with hepatitis C, and about half are unaware of their status.

Although hepatitis C is curable, most patients outside of the developed world are unable to access treatment.  In countries as diverse as Thailand, Indonesia, Georgia, Ukraine, Russia, India, and many parts of Africa, where hepatitis C is a major public health problem, access to diagnostics and treatment barely exists. This is particularly true for people living with HIV/AIDS, for which hepatitis C is now becoming one of the leading causes of death.

One of the critical drugs in the standard treatment regime for hepatitis C today—pegylated interferon-alfa— is under patent protection and costs as much as $50,000 per course. Because of a duopoly held by the pharmaceutical giants Roche and Merck—the two companies which currently produce pegylated interferon-alfa—there is no competition by generic manufacturers that could deliver desperately needed cheaper alternatives to hepatitis C treatment.  Two new hepatitis C treatments were recently approved by the FDA, yet they have to be used with pegylated interferon, adding another $30,000 to $50,000 to the cost of treatment. At these prices, how can a country like Ukraine, with more than 1 million people infected, really commit to treating its citizens?

Prohibitive pricing of lifesaving medicines is unethical and unacceptable. The only way to increase access to hepatitis C treatment is if pharmaceutical companies—in this case, Roche, Merck, and the firms with new hepatitis C drugs in the pipeline—commit to reducing their  prices substantially to levels that become affordable to the majority of people in need of treatment.  And because millions of people need access to these lifesaving treatments, national governments and international bodies, including the WHO, must provide the political push to make this happen.

More than a decade ago, HIV/AIDS patients marched the streets of South Africa, Thailand, and Brazil demanding affordable access to medicines that could save their lives.  And with success—in a matter of months the 00 per person per year to less than $100 today, resulting in more than 5 million people currently on treatment in low- and middle-income countries. Today, these same people are surviving on cheap generic AIDS drugs only to die from their untreated hepatitis C.

Demanding greater access to treatment is a primary reason that strong civil society groups, including people living with hepatitis C, initiated World Hepatitis Day. Roche and Merck must support people living with hepatitis C by substantially lowering the prices of pegylated interferon-alfa.

The 10 Dirtiest Foods You’re Eating

by iSpit

I got this email from a colleague the Tuesday after Memorial Day: “Can’t come in today. Stomach bug.”

I’m no detective but—with barbeque season officially starting the day before—a prime suspect immediately jumped to mind: the norovirus, the most common cause of food poisoning in the world.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that 200,000 Americans contract food poisoning every day. But Philip Tierno, Ph.D., a microbiologist at New York University medical center and author of The Secret Life of Germs, believes the actual number is closer to 800,000.

And in 4 of 5 of food poisoning cases, the attack happens at home—right (on the plate) under your nose.

“Everyone in this country will have at least one incident of sickness this year attributable to a foodborne virus, bacteria, or toxin,” Tierno told Men’s Health. Except that most of us won’t know what hit us. Like my colleague, we’ll chalk up the usually mild symptoms—nausea, diarrhea, cramping—to a stomach bug that’s going around.

We asked Men’s Health contributor Jim Gorman to help us identify the 10 dirtiest foods we put on our plates. His report is shocking, in that it reads like the average American’s grocery list. Read on for the dirt about your favorite foods—and how to protect yourself at the supermarket and your dinner table.

CHICKEN

The dirt: The Consumers Union, the advocacy group behind Consumer Reports, recently tested 484 raw broiler chickens—the kind that show up in supermarket coolers—and found that 42 percent were infected by Campylobacter jejuni, and 12 percent by Salmonella enterides.

The latest USDA research notes similar Salmonella levels. Now add in the fact that we each consume about 70 pounds of chicken a year—more than our intake of beef, pork, or turkey—and it’s a wonder broilers don’t come with barf bags.

At the supermarket: Look for birds labeled “free range.” Close quarters in the henhouse give bad bugs the chance to spread, as do high-volume processing operations. Free-range chickens, which are given more room to roost and are (more…)

F*ck Outta Here – CDC Preparedness 101: May 21st, 2011 Zombie Apocalypse

by iSpit

Are these people f*cking serious? Zombies now? Not only is the world gonna end but now

There are all kinds of emergencies out there that we can prepare for. Take a zombie apocalypse for example. That’s right, I said z-o-m-b-i-e a-p-o-c-a-l-y-p-s-e. You may laugh now, but when it happens you’ll be happy you read this, and hey, maybe you’ll even learn a thing or two about how to prepare for a real emergency.

A Brief History of Zombies
We’ve all seen at least one movie about flesh-eating zombies taking over (my personal favorite is Resident EvilExternal Web Site Icon.), but where do zombies come from and why do they love eating brains so much? The word zombie comes from Haitian and New Orleans voodoo origins. Although its meaning has changed slightly over the years, it refers to a human corpse mysteriously reanimated to serve the undead. Through ancient voodoo and folk-lore traditions, shows like the Walking Dead were born.

In movies, shows, and literature, zombies are often depicted as being created by an infectious virus, which is passed on via bites and contact with bodily fluids. Harvard psychiatrist Steven Schoolman wrote a (fictional) medical paper on the zombies presented (more…)

Another “Entrapment” FBI Informant Case — Sami Samir Hassoun

by iSpit

This last Sunday a young man of Lebanese descent was arrested Sami Samir Hassoun, 22 years old and a permanent resident alien who works at a neighborhood Bakery allegedly tried to set off explosives in a busy part of Chicago.  However, the explosives – weren’t actually explosives.  It was fake, provided to this brother by what turned out to be an FBI informant.  From one source:

“The arrest stemmed from an investigation conducted by the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force (JTTF). Hassoun was charged with one count each of attempted use of a weapon of mass destruction and attempted use of an explosive device.”

Weapon of mass destruction – a fake bomb provided by the FBI.  This young man is 22 years old.  He may never have done any of this without the encouragement of the informant.  This has been a common theme in the latest wave of arrests of Muslims.  It’s called entrapment.  It’s generally not used much against non-Muslims because of the legal issues.  It’s a ready-made defense for any good attorney.  But when it’s a Muslim no one bats an eyelash.  People are so brainwashed by the media – they will justify anything.

“Hassoun ultimately decided (no doubt with the encouragement of the “cooperating witness”) to detonate an explosive device in the Wrigleyville area of Chicago. He planned to cause the blast on a weekend night in order to inflict maximum damage. After that, an undercover agent was introduced to the plotter by his cooperating associate in July.” (more…)

Seasonal, H1N1 Flu Vaccine To Be Combined This Fall

by iSpit

For those concerned about the impending flu season, the government will be making the seasonal flu vaccine available again this year.

Except this year, there is a difference -the normal seasonal flu vaccine will be combined with swine flu (H1N1) vaccine as well.

“The 2010-2011 seasonal flu vaccine will include the H1N1 strain that was responsible for the 2009 pandemic,” said Vicki Monks, media spokesperson for the Oklahoma City-County Health Department.

Monks pointed to a February 2010 press release on the Flu.gov website that states: “Today’s recommendation to include protection against the 2009 H1N1 flu strain in next season’s flu vaccine was made by the FDA’s Vaccines and Related Biological Products Advisory Committee.  The committee’s recommendations typically guide vaccine manufacturers in preparing each season’s flu vaccines.  The World Health Organization has made the same recommendation. This recommendation will go into effect for next fall’s flu season.  In the meantime, you can still protect yourself against the H1N1 flu by getting your H1N1 vaccine now.”

Pig Virus Contaminates Rotavirus Vaccines, But FDA Says No Problem

by iSpit

Rotavirus vaccines are commonly given to children, and this year’s batch of vaccines made by GlaxoSmithKline and Merck are contaminated with a pig virus, the FDA recently discovered. So the FDA called a meeting to determine whether injecting a pig virus into the bodies of young children might be some sort of problem requiring a recall of the vaccines.

Can you guess what conclusion the agency reached? As reported by Reuters, the FDA concluded “…it was safe for doctors to resume giving patients Glaxo’s Rotarix and continue using Merck’s Rotateq. The agency said there was no evidence the contamination caused any harm…”

In other words, as long as they can bury the evidence and deny any link between vaccines and health problems — which has been the standard excuse of the FDA for decades — they can continue to claim the vaccines are safe enough to inject into little children.

Never mind the fact that the pig virus found in the vaccines actually causes a wasting disease in baby pigs, giving them intense diarrhea and causing them to rapidly lose weight. DNA from these viruses was detected in the “master cells” used to make the vaccines.
