Second Neti-Pot Death From Amoeba Prompts Tap-Water Warning

by iSpit

Washing noses with neti pots or squeeze bottles has become increasingly popular as a home remedy for colds, allergies and sinus trouble. But it’s not such a great remedy if it kills you.

Now that two people have died from infection with brain-eating amoebas after using neti pots, doctors are warning: do not put tap water up your nose.

“Drinking water is good to drink, very safe to drink, but not to push up your nose,” says Raoult Ratard, state epidemiologist for the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals. Two residents of his state have died after using neti pots this year, the first known deaths associated with neti pots. “The first one could have been a fluke,” Ratard told Shots. But now that we have a second one, the only explanation is the use of the neti pot.”

The first death came in June, when a 20-year-old man died of encephalitis caused by infection with Naegleria fowleri. That amoeba is common in rivers and lakes, but only very rarely causes brain infections. Back in August, we reported on several deaths in children who had been jumping or diving in fresh water. But since adults are less likely to be doing cannonballs, they’re also less likely to be infected.

Then in October, a 51-year-old Louisiana woman died of encephalitis. The doctor thought to ask if she used a neti pot. Both her brain tissue and her home‘s tap water tested positive for the microbe. Ratard says: “They found the amoeba, the lady was using a neti pot, and had no contact whatsoever with surface water.”

Thus the new warning from Louisiana: If using a neti pot or other nasal irrigation device, use distilled or filtered water. Keeping the device clean is crucial, too, Ratard says. A neti pot, which looks like a small genie lamp, can be safely washed in a dishwasher, but squeeze bottles and other devices need to be scrubbed. All need to dry between uses. “If you let them dry completely, the amoebas are not going to survive long,” Ratard says.

A quick survey of neti pots and squeeze bottles finds that the instructions recommend using boiled, distilled or filtered water. But like so many simple hygiene instructions, it’s one that’s easy to let slide. The prospect of death by brain-eating amoeba, rare though it is, should provide enough motivation to follow the rules.

iTether For The iPhone: The Tethering Police Will Catch It Soon

by iSpit

Those who snag the iTether app for iOS that allows sharing a 3G connection with a laptop better be prepared for the tethering police to slap them around.

Updated: The appearance of the iTether app in the Apple App Store has drawn attention today, as tethering apps don’t as a rule make it into the App Store. Whether it will be there long or not, those who buy and use the app better be prepared for their U. S. carrier to retaliate.

I have been warning folks for months that the tethering police, aka carriers, are watching for tethering in the background and taking action when they discover customers doing it without paying for that extra “mobile hotspot” plan. Those plans can be $20 – $30 per month, and I felt confident the carriers were not going to take it lightly when customers bypassed the extra service fee through apps.

The iTether app is just such an app, it allows iOS device owners use the connectivity to supply laptops with free networking. The app’s name aptly describes what it does, and won’t keep it off the carriers’ radars for very long.

Recently, carriers have begun automatically turning on the monthly tethering service charge for customers it determines are doing it without paying. Verizon and AT&T have blocked tethering apps in the app stores on their devices, and most likely Apple will end up doing the same.

As customers, we feel the right to use the mobile broadband services as we see fit, but the reality is much different. We have a contract, and the tethering police can push us around if we violate it. They view us as service thieves if we use apps like iTether to avoid the extra fees, and they are getting testy about it.

Updated: As expected, the iTether app has disappeared from the App Store with no word of explanation. I guess Apple has your back with the carriers.

Gang Wars: Iran Military Shoots Down U.S. Drone

by iSpit

… “It’s On”

Iran‘s military has shot down a U.S. reconnaissance drone aircraft in eastern Iran and has threatened to respond to the violation of Iranian airspace, a military source told state television Sunday.

Iran‘s military has downed an intruding RQ-170 American drone in eastern Iran,” Iran‘s Arabic-language Al Alam state television network quoted the unnamed source as saying.

“The spy drone, which has been downed with little damage, was seized by the Iranian armed forces.”

Iran shot down the drone at a time when it is trying to contain foreign reaction to the storming of the British embassy in Tehran Tuesday, shortly after London announced that it would impose sanctions on Iran‘s central bank in connection with Iran‘s controversial nuclear enrichment program.

Britain evacuated its diplomatic staff from Iran and expelled Iranian diplomats in London in retaliation, and several other EU members recalled their ambassadors from Tehran.

The attack dragged Iran‘s relations with Europe to a long-time low.

“The Iranian military’s response to the American spy drone’s violation of our airspace will not be limited to Iran‘s borders,” the military source said, without elaborating.

The United States and Israel have not ruled out military action against Iran‘s nuclear facilities if diplomacy fails to resolve the nuclear dispute.

Iran has dismissed reports of possible U.S. or Israeli plans to strike Iran, warning that it would respond to any such assault by attacking U.S. interests in the Gulf and Israel.

Analysts say Tehran could retaliate by launching hit-and-run strikes in the Gulf and by closing the Strait of Hormuz. About 40 percent of all traded oil leaves the Gulf region through the strategic waterway.

Iran said in July it had shot down an unmanned U.S. spy plane over the holy city of Qom, near its Fordu nuclear site.

Google Braces For Illegal Drug Ad Fine

by iSpit

Internet search operator Google is bracing for a fine that could top $500 million, after a federal probe of illegal online pharmacy ads placed on the website over the past three years.

Law enforcement sources told CNN that federal prosecutors in Rhode Island, along with undercover agents from the Food and Drug Administration, are heading a massive investigation aimed at Google (GOOG, 00). The prosecutors are trying to prove that Google knowingly took advertising money from websites selling highly addictive drugs without a legitimate prescription.

A spokesman for the U.S. Attorney’s office in Providence told CNN he could “neither confirm nor deny” reports of the probe. Google declined comment “since this is a legal matter.”

But in early May, Google filed a notice with the Securities and Exchange Commission saying it was setting aside $500 million to potentially resolve a case with the Department of Justice. In its filing, (more…)

@Starandbucwild Wants You to ‘Start Snitching’ and Stop Crime

by iSpit

For years, one of the most common, if not infamous, expressions on the streets of urban America has been “stop snitching,” which has evolved from a warning among those who mistrust the authorities to a mentality that threatens innocent people who witness violent crimes and major felonies, and establishes street cred just for avoiding cooperation with police under any circumstances.

But DJ Star (Troi Torain), who is one half of the morning crew on the long-controversial Star & Buc Wild show on WPHI-FM (100.3) in Philadelphia, is determined to change that regardless of what the streets say or what it does to his reputation in hip-hop. He’s bringing out a “Start Snitchin’” campaign in response to an overt rash of violent homicides in his town over the past few years. He spoke with NewsFeed after his show to explain why he wants people to report crime and cooperate with police, despite threats that “snitches get stitches” permeating hip-hop culture.

Where did all of this come from? Why do you want people to snitch?

We actually started “Start Snitching” back in 1998 when we were on the public-access Manhattan Neighborhood Network. We’ve always been outspoken and we pride ourselves on being blueprints from the streets, so it came about from when we were just talking about the senseless shootings taking place in Crown Heights (Brooklyn) where I lived for a decade. It picked up momentum in 2002 when we were hosting the morning show on Hot 97 (WQHT-FM, New York).

We got the sad news of the shooting of some young people and it was just graphic, the next day there was video footage of two teenagers shooting into a crowd at a club. We read these stories and almost become immune. So that’s what it was, man. There’s a certain mentality that must be dealt with, to stop young people and make them think. And I don’t like the culture of hip-hop being blamed. That’s another reason I’m standing up.

But how are people going to take this? “Stop snitching” is something ingrained in street culture at this point. What will people say to you for twisting the street status quo?

I couldn’t care less. I choose to stand up. I’m a man of a certain age and I’ve seen a lot. I’ve survived the crack wars and there comes a point in a person’s life where you let people know you have a moral compass. Sadly, there is a groundswell of ignorance and if you subscribe to it you will always live in fear and be subjected to that mindstate.

You, however, are no stranger to controversy yourself. So what’s the response been with the Star & Buc Wild show having such a wild reputation?

It’s been very well-received. If you look on our Twitter page, if you look at some of our blogs, it’s nice to see people who say it’s about time people stood for the cause. Even Russell Simmons on his Twitter page says he supports this. You also have to think that by todays’ standards, everybody’s a snitch. If you’re on YouTube and you’re holding money to the camera that you made illegally, or you’re showing guns, you’re snitching on yourself. So I’m not concerned on any level about what people are saying. This is where I stand.

Well what about people who don’t snitch for intrinsically preventive reasons? You know, the ones who fear catching a beatdown, or worse?

You have to break down snitching. We’re talking about senseless homicides, I’m not talking about someone who sold a bag of weed. I don’t know if you know about Philly, but there are 1.4 million people here. Since January we’re looking at 170 murders and we’re only in July. That surpasses the whole year of 2010 with 162 homicides. So I can’t worry about people who don’t want to speak up for  fear of retribution. I look at other communities that police themselves and they have a cohesive understanding that certain things are just morally unacceptable. There has to be an understanding in the cities and suburbs that, hey, it’s not going to be tolerated.

What’s next for “Start Snitchin’”? Are you planning to move it forward? Maybe take it nationwide?

I’m doing what I think can be done within my responsibilities at (parent company) Radio-One. I have to fulfill my obligations, and I’m thankful they have given me the opportunity to launch this initiative. What ever comes out of this, I’m up to the task. So that’s what this is, man. It’s going against the grain. It’s not new. I don’t think anyone’s been more vulgar or aggressive than myself out of the urban world. So this lets people know there’s more to me than what we’ve been known for in the past.

RSA SecurID Info Swiped Via Sophisticated Hack Attack

by iSpit

EMC issued a warning today that hackers have stolen information about its RSA SecurID two-factor authentication that could be used by cybercriminals to more easily breach customers’ systems.

In an open letter, RSA executive chairman Art Coviello revealed that the information was stolen via an APT (advanced persistent threat) attack. “While at this time we are confident that the information extracted does not enable a successful direct attack on any of our RSA SecurID customers, [it] could potentially be used to reduce the effectiveness of a current two-factor authentication implementation as part of a broader attack,” he wrote.

RSA is a subsidiary of EMC; its SecurID system allows admins to configure, assign, and manage token-based authentication from a central site.

According to Coviello, RSA has found no signs that the hackers made off with (more…)

Lil’ Kim – Ladies Night Feat Missy Elliot, Angie Martinez & Left Eye

Nicki Minaj – Warning

Foxy Brown’s – Foxy’s Bells

Jean Grae – Uh-Oh (1st Verse)

I know the Lil’ Kim-Foxy Brown-Nicki Minaj “beef” (yes, I use that
word very loosely) is getting as old as “thugs” dressed in skinny
jeans tucked in Uggs, but let’s have a serious dialogue about this. As
long as Lil’ Kim keeps walking around in I.R.S. shirts and
hats—“international rockstars,” not the folks who took all her worldly
possessions a few years back, and Nicki Minaj continues to eerily be
reminiscent of the ‘95 Kim, this is going to continue to be on our
minds… Oh, and no Foxy is pretty irrelevant in the grand scheme of
things. To discuss her in any aspect beyond the $100,00 she’s
currently being sued for would be the equivalent of trying to debate
if Foxy Brown could even hear her own diss record—just impractical.
Same goes for Jacki-O who has decided to join the melee, firing
paintballs (because “Bang, Bang” is nowhere near silver bullet-type (more…)

Seasonal, H1N1 Flu Vaccine To Be Combined This Fall

by iSpit

For those concerned about the impending flu season, the government will be making the seasonal flu vaccine available again this year.

Except this year, there is a difference -the normal seasonal flu vaccine will be combined with swine flu (H1N1) vaccine as well.

“The 2010-2011 seasonal flu vaccine will include the H1N1 strain that was responsible for the 2009 pandemic,” said Vicki Monks, media spokesperson for the Oklahoma City-County Health Department.

Monks pointed to a February 2010 press release on the Flu.gov website that states: “Today’s recommendation to include protection against the 2009 H1N1 flu strain in next season’s flu vaccine was made by the FDA’s Vaccines and Related Biological Products Advisory Committee.  The committee’s recommendations typically guide vaccine manufacturers in preparing each season’s flu vaccines.  The World Health Organization has made the same recommendation. This recommendation will go into effect for next fall’s flu season.  In the meantime, you can still protect yourself against the H1N1 flu by getting your H1N1 vaccine now.”

The Largest Market Crash Since The 1720?

by iSpit

Market forecaster Robert Prechter says we’re on the verge of the biggest market crash since the 1720 collapse of Britain’s South Sea Bubble, with the Dow nosediving to below 1,000 in the next five to six years, from around 10,000 now. Prechter, regarded as a powerful market “guru” in the late 1980s, relies on an esoteric technical-analysis tool that uses past market movements to predict future ones. “If I’m right, it will be such a shock that people will be telling their grandkids many years from now, ‘Don’t touch stocks,’” he says. How seriously should we take the warning?

What’s an amateur to believe? Prechter makes “Dr. Doom” Nouriel Roubini “sound like Jiminy Cricket,” says Rod Dreher in BeliefNet. But how are “utterly unsophisticated” investors like me (and probably you) supposed to judge if we should sell all our stocks, as Prechter’s “apocalyptic scenario” dictates? It sounds like a “radical position,” but Prechter’s “very far from a fringe figure,” and even his rosier peers are moving from stocks for the time being.
“Coming: Dow 1,000?”

Prechter is way too gloomy: Dow 1,000? asks Mike Shedlock in Fav Stocks. “Poppycock.” The Dow might sink as low as 5,000, but it will probably “meander around 10,000 for another decade,” as it has since first topping 10,000 in 1999. That may not seem like a reason to break out the “party hats,” but in those same 10 years, Japan’s Nikkei has dropped by about 50 percent.
“Put on your party hats — It’s time to party for another decade!”

This “pessimism bubble” will burst, too: All the economic “gloom is understandable, up to a point,” says Ross Douthat in The New York Times. But it’s really just another face of the “bubble mentality” that led us to this gloomy point. “Doomsayers” like Prechter may inflate the “pessimism bubble,” but it will pop someday, and America’s “potential for resilience” will shine through, as it always has in the past.

Infantino (SlingRiders) Baby Slings Recalled In US and Canada

by iSpit

Infantino's SlingRider infant carrier (image: Infantino website)

More than 1m baby slings made by Californian company Infantino are being recalled in the US and Canada after reports of three deaths involving them.

US and Canadian consumer watchdogs announced the recall along with Infantino of two infant carriers, the SlingRider and Wendy Bellissimo.

The US Consumer Product Safety Commission said it was aware of three deaths in slings reported last year.

A free voluntary replacement programme has been announced.

One million infant slings were being recalled in the US and 15,000 in Canada, the US CPSC said in its statement.

“CPSC advises consumers to immediately stop using these slings for infants younger than four months of age due to a risk of suffocation and contact Infantino for a free replacement product,” it said.

The CPSC was, it added, “aware of three reports of deaths that occurred in these slings in 2009″. It said these involved an infant of seven weeks in Philadelphia, an infant of six days in Salem and an infant of three months in Cincinnati.
